Adorable Garden Gingerbread House - Cabins in Makawao, Hawaii, United States
This place is a gem! SO CUTE! A recently remodeled 1930's cottage....that Jimi Hendrix stayed in when he was on Maui in 1970 to film Rainbow Bridge. Beautiful, quiet...REAL Maui! Recently remodeled, very cute! It is lined with cedar on the inside so it smells delightful when you walk in....
The Gingerbread House is a studio cottage with a kitchenette (toaster oven, microwave, coffee maker, counter-top burners, full sized fridge) and spacious bathroom with a large custom-built, tiled shower.. It has high cathedral ceilings with a huge window that looks out on beautiful lush greenery. It is on a gated property.
There is wireless Internet in the cottage, but in the event it isn't working, there is wireless available to you in other locations on the property. We have gotten the internet FIXED since the reviews were written so it is WORKING IN THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE AGAIN! (as of 1/16/17)
It has a queen sized bed, as well as a day bed (can be used as a twin), and an outdoor patio under the spectacular tree canopy. The property is on 4.5 acres of lush beauty with a seasonal stream, an organic veggie start farm, fruit trees galore (help yourself when in season....) papaya, banana, lilikoi (passion fruit), coffee, plantains, oranges, mac nuts, avocado, lychee, mango, guava, grapefruit, tangerines, lemons, coconuts, noni....and you also have access to an additional 4 acres on the adjacent property—which is home of The Sacred Garden—beautiful!.
WE HAVE NOT INCLUDED the 13.41% Hawaii Transient Accommodations Tax because you would have to pay the airbnb fee on that so to save you their fee WE WILL SEND YOU A SEPARATE INVOICE as a resolution request through Airbnb for the additional fee. (They do not add extra fees to the resolution requests.) The tax is $18 -26 a night depending on the time of year (price per night). PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS STATE LAW THAT WE ADD THE TAX...Sorry!
We have a 3 night minimum however we will book for 1-2 nights if the nights are available between other bookings so feel free to check with us. We have a 5 night minimum during Holiday periods like Christmas.
We are in an awesome location just 20 minutes from the airport and Costco, and only 2 miles to Makawao town restaurants and shops, 7 minutes to Paia, 5 minutes to Haiku town. 50 Minutes to Haleakala National Park entrance.
We also have a house on the property that is a vacation rental as well so if you need more space for a larger gathering let me know!
I offer retreat services—relationship coaching, personal and spiritual growth, guided labyrinth walks and work with Maui's best practitioners so if you want more than a vacation, let me know! We can help you with everything from Massage, to intuitive readings! I also perform weddings so if you are thinking of getting married while you are on Maui....I can also help you with that! This rental is on the property adjacent to The Sacred Garden which has two walking labyrinths, water lily ponds, meditation gardens, and more ...and is free and open to the public daily.
We have caterers available in needed.
The elevation is about 1000 feet which is PERFECT on Maui! We are about 10 degrees cooler than sea level which makes for absolutely comfortable days (70-80 degrees) and GREAT temps for sleeping (usually in the 60's). This is the MAXIMUM elevation you can stay and still go scuba diving on Maui. Speaking of diving...we are avid divers and can assist you booking Scuba Diving with the best dive operation on Maui.
You will definitely want a rental car....there is a bus stop a mile or two away but not ideal....and bikes are a little hazardous as these are hilly, windy, narrow roads.
We have a HUGE friendly dog on the property... he is great...but be forewarned he is BIG! (180 pounds)...not a barker, super sweet. We also have 4 cats on the property but no animals are inside the cottage. There are wild chickens and roosters and cows on the property across the stream. Please keep in mind that this is a jungle environment and it is nearly impossible to keep all insects out of any accommodation in Hawaii unless we poison the place. If you are phobic of insects, the jungle will not be your best bet. Gecko lizards are also common inside the houses here.

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAIʻI: Puna Geothermal Restart?
Kīlauea Volcano’s lava flow last year not only destroyed hundreds of homes and farms, it damaged and caused the shutdown of a geothermal plant that supplied 25 percent of the Big Island’s power needs. Puna Geothermal Venture intends to be back in the power business again by year-end. Critics question whether the cost of reopening is justified, versus the benefits of investing in other forms of renewable energy. Should Puna Geothermal Restart?

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I: Maui County Council – Upcountry Maui / O‘ahu Charter Amendment 1
Gladys Baisa cannot run again for Maui County Council due to term limits. The non-partisan race for her seat representing Upcountry Maui is between Kula resident Yuki Lei Sugimura, a small business owner and former aide to Senator Daniel Akaka, and Napua Greig-Nakasone, an entertainer and kumu hula who also served on the State Land Use Commission.
Greig-Nakasone and Sugimura are scheduled for this live discussion on their perspectives on Upcountry Maui issues, including: the legalization of cock fighting, metered water service, a realistic benchmark for what is referred to as “affordable” housing, and the controversial matter of jurisdiction behind the current GMO moratorium – is it federal or local?
We’ll also take a close look at one of the 20 Charter Amendments going before O‘ahu voters in November. If Amendment 1 passes, it would give the Police Commission greater authority in holding the Honolulu Police Department accountable. But does it go far enough?
wild cattle of Maui Hawaii
feral cattle roaming the kahikinui forest reserve and private land on the southern slope of Haleakala maui, the feral cattle are a result of the state closing a lease on some small private ranch owners who could not get their cattle out of the area in time in the early 1900's, the cattle then moved up the mountain through the old fence and started populating the upper parts of the mountain

Tour of Kalaupapa NHP on Molokai Island (Part 3): Judd Park, Abandoned Village of Kalawao
I’m on a group tour of Kalaupapa National Historical Park on Molokai Island, Hawaii. Our lunch break is coming to an end at Judd Park in the abandoned village of Kalawao on the east side of Kalaupapa Peninsula. There are some beautiful views of the seacliffs and a couple offshore islets. Molokai has some of the tallest seacliffs in the world. Pretty spectacular.
I walk to the ruins of the U.S. Leprosy Investigation Station that was built in 1909. Was quite a large facility but researchers had a hard time getting volunteers to go into years of isolation for medical investigation, so it ended up being a white elephant. Research failed in this remote location and the federal hospital closed in 1913 after only four years in operation.
Recorded at 12:20 p.m. July 13, 2018, on Molokai Island

New Project
A Tale of Three Bottles
A Tale of Three Bottles follows the lives of three plastic bottles and the impacts they have on the environment. Through the parallel journeys of the bottles which are thrown away, littered and recycled the film raises awareness about why avoiding single use plastic is so important. The film was created by four Maui students as part of Maui Huliau Foundationʻs Huliau Environmental Filmmaking Club. It was sponsored in part by a grant from the Atherton Family Foundation and a donation from Hawaiian Paddle Sports.

Olowalu Testimony by BlueMenpachi
To Council Members:
Please do not let this Olowalu Town Project be passed. All the evidence has been presented to you. Please do not let Frampton and Ward rape and pillage one of Maui's last untouched land. Everything that happens in the mountains DOES affect the ocean.
To Olowalu Residents:
Please do not let Frampton and Ward sweet talk you. Please do not fall for their lies. I do not know what they have told you, but if they really loved Maui they wouldn't be introducing this project in the first place. The entire island of Maui will be affected in a very negative way. Please help to protect the Olowalu Kupuna Coral. I love this island too much to let it be killed.
To Frampton and Ward:
Please stop lying. Please stop sweet talking everyone. Please stop your project.
LYRICS:
County Council members, what's going on? I voted for you all now everythings gone wrong.
Maui's got a population problem can't you tell?
Now you wanna add a new town? What the hell?
Studies have been done on Olowalu reef, construction on that seawall has already caused so much grief.
Can't you see the kupuna corals? They're all dyin' and this minimizing impact crap? I ain't buyin'
The studies have been done and the evidence is right there, yet you continue on without a care.
How much more water will you need to redirect? If you ask me, you guys got no respect.
Maui's crying out in pain, can't you hear it? The screams they get so loud, it makes my ears split.
When's the last time you swam in that sea? Oh, wait let me guess? It's dirty.
Mr. Frampton, Mr. Ward I bet you guys are nice, but building this town has too high a price.
There's too many people in our little Maui County, and they first need to learn about responsibility.
Do we have to sell the land General Plan Committee? Can't we just let the land rest and just let it be?
I feel so scared for Olowalu and Mr. Fujii. That general store holds so much history.
4,000 jobs will be created through this project, but those are only temporary, don't forget.
I've tried to get my genereation in on this event, but most of them are saying that they're just incontent.
Since you never listen, a lot of them don't give a ____. Do you hear what I'm saying council? They're giving up.
Giving up on you and your decision making. Always selling the land and always developing.
We want the land to be preserved, why can't you let it be? We don't wanna be like Oahu, this is Maui.
Our island waters are being completely ignored, not only by most of its people, but even most of the board.
Why can't we leave the land alone and let it be? Focus on all the other problems people see.
Is there corruption in the system? There's a pain in my heart. And right now council, you're all taking part.
It's simple, all you have to do is decline. You'll be known as heroes in the paper next time.
And I'm sorry if this rhyme makes me seem out of line, I need to get my point across with only 4 minutes time.
Olowalu residents, don't you know? Those reefs are your protectors, not just for show.
They're a delicate system and easy to maintain. You just have to remember, it's also their domain.
There's so many people in here trying to show you, the waters are in danger, so what will you you do?
Pay attention; this next part might seem kind of long, so I wrote the lyrics out for the next part of the song.
The population, Over fishing, Corals dying, Sedimentation, Plastic debris, Water scarcity, Pollution, People lying, Education, Invasive species, Corruption, Waste put out, Money, Tourism; Are you hearing what I shout?
Wake up Maui, we need to come together. Man up! Fix things we have now to make it better.
Please don't misunderstand, I'm not angry just sad. This so called family town, feels so bad.
We need to rely on outsiders to fix our troubles? We're already hurting ourselves by ignoring our corals.
They're such a huge part of our islands community. I hope you can understand and just let it be.
Plan says you want to promote small shops and services?
So more competition for struggling businesses?
Preserving Maui County's natural beauty and resources
Is what Mayor Alan said at the State of the County Adresses.
Now you want to sell the land, to Frampton and Ward?
They're playing you all, just like a chess board.
If they really understood how important those corals are, I wouldn't be here in front of you spittin' bar after bar.
Listen up everyone, I'm calling you out! Understand the meaning behind these lyrics that I shout!
To all the local people, you guys should understand. Your guardians are out there, protecting this land!
Sharks, Manta rays, even corals and fish, they're your aumakua, or did you forget that shit?!
Protect them because they're always protecting you. Please understand, they need your protecting too.
There's more I want to say to save our coral reefs, but the council only allows us 4 minutes each.
If I found out later that this plan has been accepted, I'm sorry Maui I've failed and nobody has listened.
