City Changers - Agents of Change: Nana Okraku Ohene (President Makola Market Clothsellers)
In our exploration of the Informal sector in Accra, we have come across many inspiration people and organisations that we are calling City Changers - Agents of Change.
In this video we celebrate the journey of Mrs Catherine Anani, a Clothseller at the famous Makola Market in Accra. She has been working there for over 15 years.
The informal trading sector has a very strong female presence in Accra. The Makola Market women are well known group of local entrepreneurs and petty traders. They are well known for their entrepreneurial skills and community advocacy skills. They are self organized into associations of traders such as Cloth Sellers, Tomato Sellers, Smoked Fish Sellers, Cow Meat Sellers, Yam Sellers, Dried Meat Sellers, Fresh Fish Sellers, Dried Fish Sellers, Provision Sellers, Silver Ware Sellers, etc. This diverse group joined The New Makola Market Traders'Union of Ghana T.U.C in 1999. It represents workers in the renowned Makola Market in central Accra, Ghana. Though it was formed in 1999, the group only officially registered in 2002 with the Registrar General Department. The Union became an official was affiliate of the Ghana T.U.C. 2003, and is also a member of StreetNet Ghana.
The aim of the Union is to foster unity among the traders in the Makola Market. The Union holds weekly meetings to discuss pressing problems facing all the Traders. In the event of any problem or conflict, the Union is called upon to settle the clash. Currently, the Makola Market Traders' Union has about 2,000 members. The ICD Accra Steering Committee has two representatives from this group to guide the project.
ACET is the local managing partner for the Rockefeller Foundation's Informal City Dialogues, Accra (ICD Accra). Our task was to conduct these dialogues in the city and to bring together a diverse group of citizens representing public, private, civic, industry, non-profits, local philanthropies, workers, street vendors, urban poor groups, academe, women and youth, who were encouraged to consider scenarios for the future of Accra in 2040.

STOP FILMING US! | Makola Market, Accra
Hi guys, welcome back! My trip is almost coming to an end so I had to make sure I took a trip to the market. I used to go with my mom as a kid and I wanted to see how things were now, also because I wanted to buy things for a much cheaper price lol. Well it was quite a long and tiring excursion. Earlier that morning, Okeke surprised Nadia and I with some really good waakye and gizzards...how sweet. We ended our day with fresh kelewele from Labone and hung out around Oxford St for the night.
Thanks again for watching and stay tuned for my last Ghana vlog (a few tears were shed) :-)

A Walk Through The Adabraka In Accra, Ghana
We lived for one month in the neighborhood of Adabraka in Accra and we couldn't have chosen a better area to live in. We got to experience a slice of local life, very close to the center and we were surrounded by amazing restaurants, food stands and bars. The biggest chunk of this video is us walking through the Adabraka Market. Can you believe the size of these giant snails?
Stay tuned for the full Adabraka article and feel free to check out our
