The town itself was once a thriving metropolis. Maldon's reputation as a picturesque historic town, known for its intact 19th century commercial center is well established. One of the most important late 19th and early 20th century townscapes in Victoria, Maldon began as a gold rush town in 1854 with the discovery of alluvial gold at the base of Mt Tarrangower. It developed as an industrial mining town during the later years of the 1800s. As one of Victoria's richest quartz mining centers, various mines at various times recorded the highest returns in the State. Mining declined in the first years of the 20th century, the last mine of the era closed in 1926, and the town's population and fortunes similarly declined
Maldon proved to be one of Victoria's richest quartz-mining centres, though with poorer alluvial results than others such as Castlemaine or Ballarat

January 16th 2016 saw the 10th annual Maldon Twilight Dinner in the main street of the historic town. In conjunction with the event, the Victorian Goldfields Railway ran a special train for passengers attending the event. The train operated from Castlemaine to Maldon along the preserved tourist railway behind heritage steam locomotive J549.
The event was attended by the current Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AM who rode the train in first class carriages Macedon and Tambo.
Upon arrival at Maldon, Her Excellency was greeted with a horse and carriage and travelled to the town centre whilst being escorted by the Bendigo Golden City Pipeband.

Victorian Goldfields Maldon to Castlemaine
The North British Mine and Quartz Kilns are located in Maldon. There are two walking tracks from the picnic area, one is the Parkins Reef Circuit Walk (2.3km return), and the other is a short walk which takes you through the ruins of the North British Mine ending at the Quartz Kilns.
The Old Castlemaine Gaol is a prison located in Castlemaine, Victoria. From 1861 to 1908 (the colonial era), the gaol housed all manner of criminals, including lunatics, debtors and ten men that were hanged within the walls. In the later of these years however, the gaol housed mostly short term sentenced prisoners and first time offenders. The gaol then closed for a number of years, before reopening in 1954 to accommodate medium security prisoners from across the state once again. It remained open until August 1990.

In late October 2013, Steamrail Victoria and Victoria Goldfields Railway teamed up once again to run the Maldon Experience, running from Southern Cross to Maldon via Castlemaine and return. The trip featured 5 different steam locos with R761, K160, K190, J515 and oil burner J549. This was J549's first trip in service since being restored at VGR.

[Part 2] On the 26th of October 2013, Steamrail with the Victorian Goldfields Railway swapped steam locomotives D3 639 with K190 at Maldon. The day gave Train Enthusiasts the chance to record something special and a day to remember! With Mainline action, Photostops on a Branchline, 5 different locomotives (R761, K190, D3 639, J515 and J549).
The branch line between Castlemaine and Maldon was closed in December 1976.
However, within weeks the Castlemaine and Maldon Railway Preservation Society was established with the aim of preserving this wonderful and unique piece of railway history for all Victorians to enjoy.
Lovingly restored in stages from Maldon, the many bridges, cuttings and embankments were reconstructed to enable the first train to reach Castlemaine in 2005. A partnership between the Victorian Goldfields Railway and Steamrail Victoria
has enabled this historic event, the first steam train to travel from Melbourne to Maldon in almost 40 years.

Porcupine Pioneer Village - Maldon Victoria 2007
We found Porcupine Pioneer Village situated just outside Maldon in Victoria. The village is a recreation, and is a complete town, with each building furnished completely as it would have been in the day. We were there in 2007.
As at July 21, 2014, Message from Maldon Visitor Centre.... Porcupine Village is not operating at present. It was on the market for some time -- I don't know what has transpired..

Hello all,
Welcome back to another heritage video, this time with a bit of royalty.
This video captures a small quantity of the operations that the Royal Train held between the months of March and July of 2019.
The Royal Train was a tour operated by V/Line, Seymour Railway Heritage Centre and the Victorian Goldfields Railway as a part of the Tudors to Windsors exhibition at the Bendigo Art Gallery.
The official royal train operated with the Victorian Railways State Carriages (no.1-5). These carriages were specially built to house a luxurious interior design.
This train was made up of State Cars 4 & 5.
The tour consisted of two main forms:
one was a return trip to Bendigo from Castlemaine behind locomotives B74 & S303;
the other being a return trip to Maldon behind an available steam locomotive.
This video captures three operations of the train.
We start off with the trial train to Bendigo which had a slightly different configuration of carriages.
Then we are off to Maldon to see one of the Royal Trains to Maldon services.
Finally we see the train return to Seymour via Melbourne.
