Malgas Pontoon Ferry September 2018 - Dash cam South Africa
Do not expect anything romantic from the pontoon ferry that gets you, and your car, to Malgas. It is not a ferry in the traditional sense. Instead the pont is rather like a floating wooden barge onto which you and your car pull before it is hand-drawn across the Breede River.
The Malgas Pont, as it is known is famous as the only hand-drawn pont, and the last of its kind, in South Africa.
We are not short of pontoons. There are another two – one at Sendelingsdrift on the Orange River in the Richtersveld, and the other at the Kei River mouth on the Wild Coast. However, neither of these is hand-drawn.
The Malgas Pont ferries you to and from the little bankside village of Malgas in the Overberg. Malgas lies here because it used to serve as a trading port – you can navigate the Breede River some 50 km inland from its mouth, at Witsand and Infanta (on opposite sides of the mouth) to Malgas.
Back then it was faster to send goods from Cape Town by ship than ox wagon, which means the Breede River played a very important role in distributing goods to the farms of the Overberg. A steamer, called the Kadie, sailed from Cape Town right up the Breede River as far as Malgas, which acted as a port for the area.
The pontoon remains because once Malgas lost its importance as a port it was not deemed important enough to warrant the building of a bridge.
The pont works with a standing cable (a pulley system) along which the ferry is 'walked' across the river. It is run by three or four local men, who haul as many as three cars 120 metres across the water at a time.
The pont is the only way across the Breede, by car, on the back roads between the N2 and Cape Infanta. To reach Malgas (sometimes referred to as Malgasy), take the turn-off from the N2 shortly after Swellendam and follow signposts. - SA-Venues.com

Vol. II - MALGAS
CAPE SECRETS
Malgas is a small area in the Overberg region near Cape Agulhas. It’s best known for the last pontoon ferry crossing in South Africa. It may seem like a quiet town but it has some pretty spectacular secrets.
We stayed at tides river lodge, a beautiful resort nestled in the Malgas valley just by the Breede River. It’s a relaxing and peaceful place to stay with a ton of lovely rooms. Next on our list was Sijnn Wines. A unique farm creating very special wines from very arid, rocky soil. I really didn’t think you could grow a vineyard in such a remote place… Malgas is special for another reason – a short drive away is the De Hoop nature collective, a reserve part of the cape floral region. It’s a 350 square km haven to both sea and land animals alike touching the mighty Breede river. This reserve blew my mind, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many types of animals in one place in such a short space of time (granted I’ve never gone on safari).
Malgas & De Hoop are definitely hidden gems and well worth a visit, here are the links to places we stayed/went:

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHETHER IT’S REALLY A TALENT AND NOT JUST A SKILL YOU ARE GOOD AT?
Well the answer is simple really if you have been doing it since you were 7 years old then you know you have a talent. such is our guest, who was chosen at the age of 7 to sing in the choir in Primary school, onto the SA youth Choir which brought home 2 SAMA Awards.
Leeron talks studying tourism and in third year dropping it for idols and getting into the music with the Band Blackcurrant. Talks Parents giving him support for music.
Performs and acoustic preview of his debut single and tells the ladies how he gets the curls, his fashion style and how cape town is viewed as a holiday destination thus the music industry pays it little respect as opposed to other parts of the country… And Many More.

Driving from Malgas to Witsand - dash cam South Africa
We drove from Tides Lodge in Malgas to Witsand, a small coastal town at the mouth of the Breede River in the Western Cape, South Africa. It is a good fishing area and is widely considered to be the whale nursery of the South African coastline.
