Borneo Elephants in Maliau Basin
Happy World Elephant Day! Have you seen an elephant in the wild before?
Our Sabah Terrestrial Conservation Programme (STCP) colleagues were on their way to Maliau Basin Conservation Area's Studies Centre in June 2015 when they encountered a herd of Borneo elephants. This herd, numbering more than 20 individuals (including five calves) calmly crossed the road while vehicles from both directions waited them out in silence. The next month, our STCP field team and Wildlife Rescue Unit of Sabah Wildlife Department successfully collared one of the herd members to study their movement patterns and use of space.
The Borneo elephants' trumpets can be heard from 01:55 onwards. Elephants use a variety of sounds to communicate with each other as part of their teamwork efforts.

Babi Hutan Kudung di Maliau Basin
ketika kami rehat makan tengahari di bangunan Maliau Basin, tiba-tiba muncul se ekor Babi Hutan dari kawasan semak, saya yakin Babi Hutan ini kelaparan, saya bagi makanan, saya dapati kaki kanan cacat kemungkinan terkena jerat dawai sehingga kakinya putus dan menjadi cacat. Kasihan.

Maliau Basin Conservation Area is reachable by paved road from Tawau and Kota Kinabalu.
The road was paved recently years and the journey could be made by any car to the Maliau Basin Security Gate. From here onward a 4Wheel Drive needed for the gravel road into the Study Centre 27 Km further in.
The distance from Tawau to Maliau Basin Conservation Security Gate is 190 kilometres.
