Maligawila Monastery complex, near Butthala, Sri Lanka.
I saw the Maligawila Buddha statue first in 1966. The statue made of sandstone was lying horizontally on the ground and it was broken at the neck. Quite a lot of vandalism of these statues occurred to remove hidden treasures ('Nidhaana') secreted inside them. Mr.Premadasa our ex President was responsible to get this statue standing erect.

Dambegoda is near Okkampitiya in the Buttala Divisional Secretariat Division of the Monaragala District of the Uva Province. It could be reached by proceeding to the right towards Okkampitiya at the Kumbukkane Junction on the Wellawaya-Moneragala road up to Maligawila and beyond another km.
The image which had been subjected to damage due to human intrvention was restored in 1990 by the Archaeological Department. Made of crystalline lime stone, the Bodhisatva image is 10m in height and weighs about 40 Tons.
The image can be described as a Bodhisatva, sculptured of the Samabhanga posture depicting strength, vitality, royalty and displaying the Katakahasta Mudra. The head band of the statue has a miniature image of a Buddha of the Samadhi posture. The imperial looking statue is adorned with royal jewellery. It is mounted on a mound with several tiers becoming smaller when reaching the top and may have been sheltered by a canopy. Avalokeiteshvara Bodhisatva tradition has evolved with Mahayana Buddhism. It is believed that worshipping Avalokiteshvara Bodhisatva could bring to the adherants security and the efficasy to cure sickness. It is believed that this could be the spot mentioned in the Mahavamsa where Prince Agbo of Ruhuna is said to have constructed homes and bestowed them to the blind and the sick at Kanagama. This statue signifies the trend towards the Bodhisatva worship during the latter part of the Anuradhapura period.

The name Buduruwagala means “the rock with the statue of Buddha” - Buduruvagala viharaya
Buduruvagala, seven collosal figures carved out of a rock face at Buduruvagala - stone images of the Buddha is located about 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast of Wellawaya in Monaragala districtSri Lanka 2015
Buduruwagala is an ancient buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. The complex consists of seven statues and belongs to the Mahayana school of thought. The statues date back to the 10th century. The gigantic Buddha statue still bears traces of its original stuccoed robe and a long streak of orange suggests it was once brightly painted. The central of the three figures to the Buddha's right is thought to be the Buddhist mythological figure-the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. To the left of this white painted figure is a female figure in the thrice-bent posture, which is thought to be his consort-Tara.

Local tours - Spice and Rice farms in Sri Lanka
We view the historic sites in Maligawila - the remnants of the Pathma Vihara and its two Buddha Statues - and the Maitreya Bodhisattva. These sites are near Monaragala.
In Monaragala, there are vast areas of Paddy fields. Ecowave works with the farmers in the area to promote farming of Rice in the area. We train them how to do it organically without chemicals so it creates a higher value. And then we visit the spice farmers who are cultivating spices like Pepper, Tumeric, Ginger, and also you will be able to visit a rubber plantation and see how this natural rubber is processed. Finally we have a chance to visit the Ecowave's spice factory and see how production from the farmers get processed here, and packaged into spices that go to the markets in Sri Lanka.
Ecowave wants tourism to support the livelihoods of local communities.
