India - Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple - Chittoor -
Kanipakam is a village in Irala mandal, located in Chittoor district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
Kanipakam is home to a popular Hindu temple of Lord Ganesha called as Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple. It was constructed in the early 11th century CE by the pandian King Maravarman sundara pandian and a siva temple by Kulothunga Chola I and was expanded further in 1336 by the Emperors of Vijayanagara dynasty.
Adjacent Temples:

Sri VaradaRajaSwamy Devasthanam
Description taken from the below mentioned link.
Main Temple History
Kanipakam is a small village on the bank of Bahuda River.
Kani means wetland and Pakam means flow of water into wetland. According to the legend of the temple there were three brothers and each one had a handicap. Viz., Dumb, Deaf and Blind. They were earning out their livelihood by cultivating a small piece of land.
In olden days water was drawn from the well by way of 'Picot System'. As one of them used to irrigate the field through the channels, the other two used to ply on the Picot. On one such operation they found that the water in the well got dried up and they could no longer continue their job. One of them got into the well and started digging it up. He was taken aback to see the iron implement hitting a stone like formation.
Later, he was shocked to see blood oozing out from it. Within in a few seconds the entire water in the well, turned blood red in color. Thus, startled by this divine sight, all the three became normal getting rid of their deformities. As soon as the villagers came to know about this miracle, they thronged to the well and tried to deepen the well further. But their attempt proved futile because the 'swayambhu' idol (the self-manifested) of Lord Vinayaka emerged from the swirling waters.
Ultimately they offered many number of coconuts with all prayers- modesty kneeling before the new idol afford “MAGALHARATHI” etc. They declared the ideal of “SWAYAMBHU” and tendered number of coconuts. The coconuts water flowed into the channel to a distance of more than one and a quarter acres. The indication of this led to the modification in the usage of the Tamil word “KANIPARAKAM” and later pronounced as KANIPAKAM. Even today the idol is in the original well and the springs of the well are perennial and the eternal. During the rainy season, the holy water from the well overflows even today.
Another striking and strange feature of the idol is that it is still growing in size. At present, we can see the knees and the abdomen of the idol. Smt. Lakshmamma, an ardent devotee had offered a 'Kavacham' (Armour) to the Lord, fifty years ago but today it is out of size and doesn't fit the idol. The holy water from the well is offered to the devotees as theertham.
The legend behind Bahuda River
Long ago there lived two brothers Sankha and Likhita. They were on a pilgrimage to Kanipakam. As the journey was tiring, the younger brother Likhita felt hungry. Disregarding the advice of the elder brother he plucked a mango from the mango grove. Sankha felt bad and reported this to the ruler of that area and pleaded for punishment for the sin committed during the pilgrimage. Thus Likhita was punished severely being deprived of both arms.
Bahuda River
Later they took bath in the river near Kanipakam temple. Lo Behold! The chopped arms were restored to Likhita as soon as he had a dip in the sacred waters of the river. These incidents lead the ruler to rename the river as 'Bahuda' (Bahu means human arm). Thus the river beside Kanipakam temple is now known as 'Bahuda River'.
Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka as up-holder of 'Truth'
The swayambhu idol of Kanipakam is the up-holder of truth. Day to day disputes between people is resolved by taking a 'special oath'. The people in the dispute take a holy dip in the temple tank and swear before the lord. It is taken as gospel truth.
There are instances when the person who committed that sin voluntarily agrees as soon as he had the dip and much before entering the temple itself. It seems the Lord lawns invisibly on the sinner and makes him repent & feel guilty for his sinful deeds.
Thus the glory of Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka spread far and wide and the honorable courts uphold the 'special oath' in their judicial pronouncements.

This 14th-century story is from the book From The History of Srisailam, pages 32 and 33. At that time there lived a couple, Nagireddy and Gouamma, in Ramapuram near Srisailam. They were very rich and belonged to the Veerashaiva religion. They always helped others, but they did not have any children, which made them very unhappy. To fulfill their desire, they went to Srisailam Malikarjuna Swamy on Sivarathri and worshiped wholeheartedly. One night, Mallikarjuna Swamy appeared in Nagireddy's dream and said that a devoted daughter would be born to them. He said about this to his wife and felt very happy. In the morning he performed the pooja as usual and left for town. After some time, a daughter was born; he named her after Mallamma, as she was gift of Mallikarjuna. They brought up her with all care and love. From childhood Mallamma devoted herself to Shiva which made her parents happy. When Mallamma grew old enough, her parents decided to join her in marriage with Baramareddy, who was the son of Hemareddy, a rich man of Siddhapuram. After the arrival of Mallamma in her in-laws' house, the wealth and glory started increasing. As she had learned charity from childhood, she helped the poor and needy in her in-laws' house also. Unable to tolerate this, her sister-in-law, Nagamma, who was very rude, told her mother-in-law about Mallamma. Her mother-in-law, who was also rude, started ill-treating her. She asked her to do all the hard work, but Mallamma never stopped worshiping Lord Shiva amidst her problems. They started sending her to herd the cows, where she also gave Siva pooja. Then they told Baramanna about Mallama's character and forced her to kill Mallamma. When Baramanna saw her worshiping Mallikarjuna Swamy, who came to her as sage, he dropped his knife. Mallamma pleased all her family members with her devotions to Lord Siva and went about the country preaching Shivatathvam and finally reached the presence of Siva. In Srisailam Mahakshettram, even today we can find the cow shed of Mallamma at the back of Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple. The water flowing near Mallamma's statue is said to be her tears and is described as the holy River Bindu in Srisailam Khadam of Scandapuranam.

Gudimallam Temple Abhishekam
Gudimallam is a historical temple in the Srikalahasti Mandal which lies close to the Renigunta Railway Station. A Shiva Linga, discovered between the 1st century and 2nd century BC, is installed in the garbhagriha of the Parasurameswara Temple. The main temple sanctum is situated at a lower level as compared to the main floor level of the Mukhamantapa and Antarala.
It is believed that it belongs to Trimurthy, with Shiva on the top, Vishnu in the middle and Brahma at the bottom.
Dating back to the third and second century BC, it is a simple structure consisting of a single semicircular chamber below ground level. Walking down the few steps into the garbha griha brings one face to face with a 1.35-metre, seven-sided monolithic lingam. The front plane has the figure of Parasurama standing on the crouching figure of a Yaksha. It rests on a base of seven concentric rings, or peethams, only two of which are visible above the surface.
The main lingam and peetham, which were once out in the open under a tree, are dated 3rd century BC, while successive rulers of Pallavas, Banas, Cholas and Rayas made later additions to the temple. The semicircular shrine is a clear feature of the influx of Buddhist architecture into Hindu ones, as was common in the period. The low railing surrounding the idol has floral patterns typical of Buddhist and Jain architecture. Inscriptions on the temple walls in ancient Tamil describe the royal donations made to the temple, besides the various modifications made by rulers.
A Puranic tale tells of Parasurama having beheaded his mother at the behest of his father. The sage was advised by rishis to locate the temple and to worship the lingam as a penance. After much searching, Parasurama found the temple in the middle of the forest, dug a pond nearby and began his purgation.
A single divine flower used to grow miraculously in the pond each day, which the sage offered to Shiva as worship. He appointed a yaksha, Chitrasena, to guard the flower from wild beasts. Parasurama used to bring one hunted creature and toddy everyday for the yaksha.
One day, Chitrasena, a devotee of Brahma, felt tempted to worship Shiva himself. An enraged Parasurama attacked Chitrasena when he found the flower missing.
The battle lasted for 14 years, and was so fierce that a pallam, or pit, was created at the site. ’Gudipallam’, or ‘temple in the pit’, became Gudimallam over time. Unable to choose the victor, Shiva is finally said to have merged both into Himself, and the figures still etched show the hunted beast and toddy pot in Parasurama’s hand. Brahma as Chitrasena, Vishnu as Parasurama and Shiva as the lingam form this unique, unparalleled icon.
There are smaller shrines in the courtyard, mainly for Goddess Parvati, the six-faced Kartikeya and Suryanarayana, all monoliths and over 1.25 metre tall. The sun god is shown standing erect with a flower in each hand, one of the earliest known depictions, comparable to the temples at Konark and Arasavalli in Srikakulam district.
A mysterious event associated with the temple is that of the main chamber getting flooded every sixty years. A small underground tank and a duct connecting the tank to the Shiva lingam can be seen even today. These remain stone dry except during the 60 year phenomenon when water suddenly gushes through with such force that it rises over the column of the lingam, flows over the top and subsides as suddenly. The last time this happened was on December 4, 2005. Monument attendant P. Seenappa, who has recorded the incident in the temple register, says that the episode lasted just a few minutes. The water then fell and remained at six inches for four hours, after which it disappeared as though it was never there. Oldsters remember it happening earlier. Ramanaiah, a 75-year old villager said that he saw a similar phenomenon in 1945, except that the entire chamber had got flooded then.
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) conservation assistant Krishna Chaitanya says that the water table in the area is at a depth of 300-350 feet, so there is no tangible explanation for the phenomenon. Devotees believe that the water comes all the way from Kashi to do abhishekam to the lingam.
There is yet another remarkable feature of the temple. The rising sun’s rays pass through the grills carved on the stone walls twice a year during the solstices (uttarayana and dakshinayana) and fall directly on the forehead of the main Shiva lingam.

nallamala forest trip in srisailam- Ista kameswari temple
The Nallamalas (Telugu: నల్లమల్ల కొండలు) (also called the Nallamalla Range) are a section of the Eastern Ghats which stretch primarily over Kurnool, Mahabubnagar, Guntur, Prakasam,Kadapa and Chittoor districts of the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. They run in a nearly north-south alignment, parallel to the Coromandel Coast for close to 430 km between the rivers, Krishna and Pennar. Its northern boundaries are marked by the flat Palnadu basin while in the south it merges with the Tirupati hills. An extremely old system, the hills have been extensively weathered and eroded over the years. The average elevation today is about 520 m which reaches 1100 m at Bhairani Konda and 1048 m at Gundla Brahmeswara.[1] Both of these peaks are in a north westerly direction from the town of Cumbum. There are also many other peaks above 800 m.[2] Over a period of History conjoining all the three present states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, a legend survives that Nallamalla is a treasure trove in the region. The Legend continues to a large extent, since some of the tribes living within Nallamalla have practically refused to take up civil living and are hostile towards a non-tribals or rival tribals, and also because these ranges are largely unexplored and stay unexplored even till date. The difficulty of finding in this terrain is made more clear that even with sophisticated finding equipments, the Late Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh lay dead and unfound for more than 24 hours in the helicopter crash that killed him.
