Maloti Drakensberg Undoubtedly Unsurpassed
(abndigital.com)
The Maloti and Drakensberg mountains in Lesotho and South Africa have the potential to become an internationally preferred tourism destination; but the region has a dire need to develop sustainability. Latitude visits Maloti Drakensberg and speaks to Amerintia Human, Chairlady of the Maloti Drakensberg Route Executive Committee and Leonore Beukes, Chief Director for the Southern Regions at the National Department of Tourism, about developing this scenic splendour.
The Amphitheatre Hike, Royal Maloti Drakensberg Park, South Africa
Colin drove us to Royal Natal Maloti Drakensberg Park, which is a World Heritage Site. Here we went on a three hour hike called The Cascades which took us pretty steeply up to a large lookout rock that gave us a great view of the area they call the Amphitheatre as the mountains form a semi circle around the area. Really a beautiful place and a great walk.

The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park has exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts. Rolling high altitude grasslands, the pristine steep-sided river valleys and rocky gorges also contribute to the beauty of the site. The site's diversity of habitats protects a high level of endemic and globally threatened species, especially birds and plants. This spectacular ...

DRAKENSBERG MOUNTAIN SOUTH AFRICA

uKhahlamba Drakensberg
The Drakensberg Escarpment of South Africa is one of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. Known by the Zulus as uKhahlamba, the Barrier of Spears, the escarpment hosts colossal cliffs, jagged ridges and the world’s second highest waterfall, Tugela.
The watershed of the Drakensberg forms a border with the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. The route we backpacked made its way through these rolling hills before emerging at the end of the day to spectacular views. The area is farmed by local Basotho shepherds, usually teenage boys, who look after sheep, goats, cows and donkeys. The Drakensberg is also the source of many of South Africa’s great rivers - rainfall here is critical to communities around the country. In the summer months clouds bubble up in the morning and by the afternoon thunderstorms crash around the surrounding peaks.
This footage was captured on a 9-day unsupported hike through the area with two friends, Hougaard and Steve, and a guide. Our route took us from the Amphitheatre to Rockeries, down Mweni Pass and up Fangs Pass before returning to where we started. With 70% of the oxygen at sea level and 32kg of camping kit, food and camera gear, the hike was challenging but made enjoyable by excellent weather and inspiring scenery.
The track ‘uKhahlamba Drakensberg’ is performed by Insingizi and produced by Kurt Adametz. Listen on Spotify here:

Nouvel épisode de mon aventure Sud-Africaine avec mon étape dans les montagnes du Drakensberg. Une région de grandeurs avec ses paysages saisissants. Et le grand Cathedral Peak, qui nécessite pas moins de 11 h de marche, 22 km et 1 500 m de dénivelé pour en atteindre le sommet à 3 004 m d’altitude…

Hermits Wood Campsite – Garden Castle Nature Reserve // South Africa Safari Day 3 of 25
We leave buttresses of Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the most northerly part of the Maloti-Drakensberg World heritage site, heading south to the most southerly campsite – Hermits Wood Campsite in the Garden Castle Nature Reserve (Mkhomazi Wilderness area).
The 36 km drive into the mountains from Underberg takes about an hour and is magnificent, even passing through Drakensberg Gardens Resort golf course! The gates close at 18h00 in winter and 19h00 in summer.
There’s no electricity at the campsite, but the view of the #Drakensberg is stunning and well worth it.
After setting up camp, we hit the rock pools – Hippo Pools – until sunset, found another puddle for the #jeep and had marshmallows over the fire.

SA Ramsar - Natal Drakensberg Park
The largest Ramsar wetland in South Africa also boasts some of the most beautiful natural splendour this region can offer. Explore this mountainous park made up of several smaller reserves over a stretch of more than 200km along the border with Lesotho. It offers a haven for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Drakensberg Cable Car Part 2
The Drakensberg mountain range is an incredible escarpment extending from southern Lesotho, all the way to Limpopo. This magnificent and dramatic mountain range reaches its highest point in KwaZulu Natal, what most of us know as the true Drakensberg. The peaks of the Drakensberg mountains are pristine and have been a World Heritage Site since 2000. Only those who expend the effort and climb have previously experienced the beauty of these summits but with the proposed development of a cable car, many more will take on the mountain with ease. The proposed cable car will be built in the Northern Drakensberg, near the Amphitheatre in a poorly accessed part of the berg. Proponent of the development, the MEC of Economic Development and Tourism, says this is a way of sharing the beauty of the Drakensberg with all South Africans and aims to build up tourism in the area. The proposed site is home to many endangered vultures, as well as a community who have concern about the cable way and are fervent custodians of the environment and keen on protecting the Drakensberg. Bonne ventures to the Drakensberg to investigate the impacts of this development and ask some important questions.
Drakensberg Mountains Trailcam Takes
I explore a brand new area in the Drakensberg Mountains. After talking to the general manager at the hotel where we stayed and getting the permission to put out my cameras. I took a short hike to a secluded forest patch near some water. While setting up my cameras I picked up loads of tracks and activities and I now was hoping to get a few new species for my Trail Cams.
