Eden Camp in Malton, Yorkshire
Join me at Eden Camp as we explore some of the exciting exhibits housed in this ex prisoner of war camp.
Located on the outskirts of the market town of Malton in North Yorkshire, Eden Camp is a multi-award winning Modern History Theme Museum housed within the grounds of an original World War Two prisoner of war camp. It was developed into a museum by local businessman Stan Johnson to stand as a tribute to all people, civilian and military, who endured hardship throughout World War Two.
Today, Eden Camp has people of all ages visiting from around the world to see the story of World War Two re-created using sights, sounds, smells and moving figures to create a unique atmosphere that makes it feel like you travelled back in time to wartime Britain.
Old Malton and Malton town center.North Yorkshire in 1970
Historically the town was famous most notably for its Roman history, Charles Dickens association and its strong connection with horse-racing. In Roman times it was one of the most important settlements in the north of England with a strategically important cavalry fort. This equestrian link continues to the present day with Malton’s excellent reputation for breeding and training race horses.
Interestingly, Charles Dickens was a regular visitor to Malton and he based Scrooge’s office in A Christmas Carol on offices in Chancery Lane, which is now the Counting House museum.
Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum Malton North Yorkshire
This is one the most difficult locations I have ever taken photos. The problems being ever changing light from bright to very dark. Space and very busy at times which made sound recording difficult, also reflection from the glass and wire.
I hope you enjoy the show, its the best museum I have been to for a long time we gave it 5 stars.

Dickens House - Malton
Malton's links with Charles Dickens stem from his close friendship with Charles Smithson, a solicitor based at offices in the town's Chancery Lane. It is believed that the Smithson Solicitors office in Chancery Lane was the model for Scrooge's counting house in 'A Christmas Carol'.
The film shows members of The Charles Dicken's (Malton) Society preparing for the Victorian Weekend in November 2010. Nicholas Fletcher's video also features interviews with Dickensian Actor Brian Oxberry and local historians John Stone and Syd Woodhams.

The town of Malton was founded in AD 71 and became in turn an important post for the defence of the area.
Malton was regarded as a strategic military location and was not vacated by the Romans until AD 429 after the near demise of the Roman Empire.
Malton is the oldest town fort founded by the Romans north of the Humber, just older than York.

A day out at Eden Camp near Malton in Yorkshire
Author Ron Freethy with Dave Roberts at Eden Camp on Easter Sunday
Reporter: Dave Roberts chats with author and BBC TV / Radio presenter: Ron Freethy about his latest book titled 'Yorkshire at War'. Ron talks about his interest in wartime history and how he has tried to capture the stories of real life experiences, whilst using locations such as Eden Camp Modern History Museum to research and publicise his work.
The video also features a World War Two washing day demonstration presented by: Sandra Day of the UK Home Front Re-enactment group, the group specialise in providing educational displays of civilian life during 1940s Britain.
There's also a little look at what visitors can see when going to Eden Camp. Although it must be said, there are over 30 themed displays at the museum and I recommend visitors allow at least half a day or more to fully enjoy your visit.
If you don't know much about WWII, you most certainly will after visiting Eden Camp.
