Dachstein Caves (Austria) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Dachstein Caves in Austria.
The impressive Dachstein Mountain Range is located in central Austria. Beyond the limestone rock of the Dachstein is a fascinating world that is invisible from the outside, the Dachstein Caves. Those who discovered the first of these caves named it the Mammoth Cave due to its large dimensions that have a total length of sixty kilometres. Research that is currently taking place within the heart of the mountain has not yet been completed thus it is impossible to confirm the true total length of its various passageways. The foaming water that flows in front of the Koppenbrueller Cave comes from a spring deep within its interior. It was once used as a hiding place and features in several colourful myths and legends. Due to its network of caves the Dachstein Mountains are far more than just the typical karst covered mountains of the Austrian Alps. Its cave system continues to be a beautiful enigma. A veritable natural wonder of the world!

DACHSTEIN GONDOLA & ICE CAVE - Obertraun, Austria - Leonard Does Europe S1 E21
On our last day in Obertraun, my mother and I took a trip up the mountain (the same one that could be seen out of our hotel room window) in a gondola to see the Dachstein Ice Cave! My mom is afraid of heights, so she wasn't thrilled about the whole gondola thing. Then once we got up there we had to take a fairly strenuous 20 minute uphill walk to get to the mouth of the cave. But it was worth it, because the ice cave was very cool (pun intended - seriously it was really cold in there)!

Episode 38 - Dachsteinbahn
In the small resort town of Obertraun, near Hallstatt, a mighty gondola travels in three stages high up the Dachstein mountain. Today we climb 6600 feet up the mountain, and explore two huge ice caves.
The first stage runs from the base station at Obertraun, near our hotel, up to Schonbergalm at 4500 feet. Before we hit the caves, we stop at a tiny local-style wood cabin that is also a museum about the exploration and history of the caves. A miniature model of the cave system is on display.
On this level of the mountain, we explore the Giant Ice Caves and Mammoth Caves. These were discovered in 1910.
In the Giant Ice Caves, we take a half-mile hike through eerie, icy, subterranean limestone canyons the size of subway stations. They were formed over 5000 years ago and the inner surface of the caves are covered in iron oxide. These limestone caverns were carved by rushing water. They are named after scenes from Wagner's operas.
Next, we hike up a steep mountain trail (very tired!) to visit the Mammoth. Only a half mile of the 30 mile long Mammoth Caves is open to the public. Here we find an impossible world of ice sculptures naturally formed from over a thousand years of melting glacier ice.

#MarsTweetup the movie, April 28, 2012, Dachstein, Austria
On 28th of April 2012, the Austrian Space Forum (OEWF) invited 20 Twitter followers to the Dachstein Mars simulation.
A Tweetup is an informal gathering of people who are using the microblogging plattform Twitter. This MarsTweetup is a unique opportunity to follow live the Dachstein Mars simulation, to meet the spacesuit simulator Aouda.X and to discuss with scientist and space experts about analog missions.
Together with international partners the OEWF will be conducting a five-day simulation with experiments and tests in the mammoth- and giant ice cave at the Dachstein near Obertraun (Austria). Besides the Polish MarsScociety, who won with their MAGMA2 rover the University Rover Challenge in 2011, also a team of the WISDOM radar, a radar experiment from the ESA EXOMARS rover, will test their experiments at the Dachstein, there will also be a remote-science experiment with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Sandy River Glacier Cave
Spent the afternoon exploring the sandy river ice cave. Not much to it, but we only found the large obvious one. Didn't go looking for the others because the weather was too bad.
