Gas drilling in Russia's Far North threatens Nenets community (Eng)
Summery: 2 Part short documentary about Nenets people and Gas drilling by Gazprom.
Tazovskiy, a small town on the Arctic coast. It is the middle of March, but the weather is freezing with temperatures at around minus 30 degrees Celsius. The best way to get around is in a vezdekhod. These vehicles go everywhere.
This weekend the Nenets, the indigenous population of the Yamal region, are meeting for their annual herdsmen festival.
Geologists have found out that the whole of the Yamal region is literally swimming in gas. For Gazprom, the Russian gas monopoly, tapping into those reservoirs has meant a huge investment. Before the first cubic meter of gas could flow from Novozapolyarniy, this huge complex had to be built, hundreds of kilometers north of the Polar Circle. The natural gas is delivered far away to Berlin by long distance pipeline. But their industrial activity may threaten the Nenets' traditional way of life.

Yamal -- Icy Destination For Extreme Tourism - Travel
No one doubts Yamal's great natural beauty or its unusual fauna. But does it really look like a tourist paradise? Local authorities certainly hope it will turn into one. They are hoping to turn Yamalia's limitations into advantages.
Extreme tours will give travelers a chance to go where few others have been before. There are plans afoot to rebuild a former prison camp, as a memorial of the horrors of Soviet purges. And the cold weather means the local museum houses the best-preserved mammoth in the entire world.
As the producer of ninety percent of Russia's gas, Yamal is not poor. But tourism will help its indigenous peoples.
Struggling to make a living from the traditional nomadic, reindeer-herding lifestyle, the locals welcome tourists hungry for experiences and souvenirs.
Last year, eight thousand foreign visitors braved Yamal. But with a refurbished airport, more routes and a brand new luxury hotel, they are arriving in greater numbers every day.
One Spanish-speaking tourist says: I knew it was a mammoth area, but did not know we were a few miles from this so important mammoth. For those who do not know this mammoth baby is the only one found in perfect condition, complete -- not only from the outside, but from the inside as well.
The odds for tourist success are long, but as the world gets smaller, people want to go further - and there are few places as far away as Yamal.

In Russia, the 900-year-old mummy of the polar princess was unearthed and she is simply amazing
A wonderful mummy of the polar princess was found near the Arctic Circle, her long eyelashes and hair remained intact for 900 years.
The memorable features of a woman's face are clearly visible after the scientists extracted it from a cocoon consisting of copper and fur, in which she was buried in permafrost in the 12th century.
She was about 35 years old, she was the only woman found among about three dozen graves excavated by archaeologists in the burial of the Green Yar near Salekhard, and the details of the accidentally mummified remains are striking. Her impressive eyelashes and teeth were preserved just impeccably, like the head in general.
The green tint on his face is a consequence of fragments of a copper boiler, apparently intended to be protected in the afterlife. Archaeologists believe that it was copper that facilitated the unintended mummification of the polar princess. It belonged to the mysterious medieval hunting and fishing civilization that dominated this polar region, but had connections with Persia.
Previous finds in the burial of the Green Yar near Salekhard included bronze bowls, originating from ancient Persia, located 6 thousand kilometers to the south-west.
Archaeologists are puzzled why she was the only adult woman found in the burial, previously considered exclusively male. Most likely, this means that she was an elitist member of her community living in this cold region, although in addition to several rings near the skull, there was no evidence of ornaments in her grave. And although the head of a woman is well preserved, the rest of the body is gone.
Russian and South Korean scientists will conduct a detailed analysis of the remains - in an attempt to better understand the life of the early polar settlers. According to them, similar mummies of natural origin are very rare and that is why such finds are unique.
