Mammoth Museum, Yakutsk, Russia (Siberia)
The Mammoth Museum is a beautiful and educational place to visit. An important part of the discoveries of mammoths, bison, woolly rhinoceros, muskox, cave lions and other animals long extinct were made in Yakutia. The Mammoth Museum was created in 1991 in Yakutsk as scientific and cultural center studying mammoths and their environment before the ice age. In this unique museum, many valuable paleontological items are displayed.

REAL Woolly MAMMOTH sighting footage caught on tape! (Yakutsk city, Sakha Republic, Siberia 1943)
After the conclusion of the WW2 Battle of Stalingrad, Nazi Party member and official photographer for the NSDAP, Holger Hildebrand, was captured by the Red Army at the Battle of Stalingrad. He and thousands of other Wehrmacht soldiers were later sent on a death march towards Siberia; this mammoth footage is understood to have been taken during that journey. (Hildebrand is believed to have died a prisoner of war at a Soviet forced labor camp in late 1945. His Granddaughter later came into possession of the footage when his belongings were repatriated to Germany from Russia decades after his death.)
The magnificent music -- called Hero Down -- once again comes from the very talented Kevin MacLeod of Incompetech:
Here's an astonishing article discussing the recent finding of a Woolly Mammoth (with blood still intact and in liquid form!). Maybe the creature did not die as long ago as they presume:

Russian 'Mammoth City' gathers researchers
Hundreds of scientists, researchers and palaeontologists have gathered in the Russian Republic of Yakutia for a conference devoted to extinct mammoths.
Russia Mammoth - One of the world's best preserved woolly mammoth carcasses goes on display
About 38,000-years old and in surprisingly good shape, the carcass of a woolly mammoth went on display in Moscow on Tuesday.
Scientists, who found the teenage female mammoth in 2010 in Russia's far north region of Yakutia, named it Yuka.
Locals first noticed it in 2009, but in 2010 the carcass became completely exposed.
Yuka had gone on display in Japan, Taiwan and Russia's city of Vladivostok before it was exhibited in Moscow.
Mammoth Yuka was a teenager, she was from six to nine years. She was very well preserved, even the brain was preserved, Vladimir Potapov, coordinator of International exhibition project Mammoth Yuka said.
Albert Protopopov, a mammoth expert from the Yakutia Academy of Sciences said Yuka's carcass bore traces indicating that humans hunted for mammoths during the Ice Age.
The age of the mammoth suggests that people lived in Yakutia earlier than previously thought.
The known sites of the ancient people in Yakutia are 32 thousand years old, and this mammoth is 38 thousand years, Protopopov said.
Wooly mammoths are thought to have died out around 10,000 years ago, although scientists think small groups of them lived longer in Alaska and on islands off Siberia.

The Federal University of North East Russia (NEFU) invited me and my teams to (do this) research. There are maybe some chances to get some good samples from the cave lion remains. If we get good samples, then I will do our best to try to restore the cave lion.

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Hwang Woo-suk, South Korean researcher:
I believe these samples is unique in the world. And I hope to get some more, some better samples. I strongly believe these are samples is unique. Therefore I want to get some more, and some better samples from the cave lion.

7. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Semyon Grigoryev, Director of the Mammoth Museum at the NEFU:
There were two cubs found. One is undamaged - which we didn't touch today of course - and the second which has the front part. Today we took around three pieces of the skin with the muscles to find living tissues.

9. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Semyon Grigoryev, Director of the Mammoth Museum at the NEFU:
As the body didn't survive, it is hard to talk about the overall standard of preservation, but I think the parts we have are fairly good – this part of the lion was lying in the ice, today we found traces of ice in the remains. From our experience with the Maliy Lyakhovsky Mammoth that we found in clean ice and which has very good remains, I think that some parts of the lion might be very good.

STORYLINE:
Scientists from Russia and South Korea are using the remains of an Ice Age cave lion cub Fund in Russia's Sakha Republic in an attempt use its DNA to clone the extinct creature.
Two Ice Age cave lion cubs were found in August last year, in a state of near-perfect preservation, thanks to the deep-freeze conditions provided by the permafrost where they lay.
Researchers hope to find living tissues containing DNA in the remains of the cub which will allow them to recreate the now extinct Ice Age cave lion.
The research is a joint project by Russian and South Korean scientists working at the Joint Foundation of Molecular Paleontology, at Yakutsk's North East Russia University, which is also home to the Mammoth Museum.
Heading the Russian side is Semyon Grigoriyev, who is also head of the Mammoth Museum and currently working on a similar project where scientists are reportedly attempting to clone a mammoth, using the same process.
The remains of the second Ice Age cave lion cub won't be used for this research and will be kept whole as part of the Mammoth Museum's collection.

Animals Found FROZEN In Ice!
Check out these animals found frozen in ice! This top 10 list of amazing animals discoveries has some ancient animals that were frozen in time for eternity!
10. The Yuka Mammoth
The Yuka mammoth is one of the most well known and scientifically valuable animals that have ever been found. It was discovered in 2010 within the Siberian permafrost on the coast of the Laptev Sea in Russia. The most unusual thing about this 39,000-year-old mammoth was that it was mummified, and had the most in-tact mammoth brain ever found, with folds and blood vessels still visible.
Finding specimens like this is incredibly helpful to understanding the species. Studies of the brain showed it to be very similar to modern day elephants, and also led to researchers to developing better ways of storing mammoths in the future when new ones are found. Along with the Yuka mammoth, a number of other ones have been found in the region, although not in as good condition, and have been highly sought after by researchers for a different purpose.
Because of their relatively intact DNA, and their status as an intriguing extinct animal that is very similar to some that exist today, the mammoth is a great candidate for bringing a species back from extinction using cutting edge technology. It is believed that with a bit of luck and perseverance, we might once again see these giants alive and well, and maybe within just a few years! I would definitely love to see that!
9. Moose
It’s rare enough to find an animal preserved in ice, but rarer still is the apparent freezing of two animals when they’re interacting with each other. Well this is what a couple of hikers found in Alaska in 2016.
Beneath 8 inches of ice was the stunning sight of two moose fighting each other, clearly so engrossed in their tussle that they failed to notice the approaching frost. In the fall, males tend to be more aggressive towards each other, likely due to territorial disputes or to gain the attention of a female, and at some point these two managed to get their antlers tangled. They probably drowned in the cold water before being frozen over as temperatures fell.
Soon after their discovery, the moose were removed from the ice by local enthusiasts who wanted to preserve the unusual find forever.
8. Fish
As a fish living in water, ice can be both a blessing and a curse. It’s the unique property of ice floating on top of water that helps to insulate warmth and allow fish to survive falling temperatures, but they aren’t always so lucky. In 2014, a sharp cold eastern wind sent temperatures plummeting very quickly around the island of Lovund in Norway, and instantly froze parts of the ocean.
Unfortunately for a large shoal of fish, thought to be attempting to escape a predator at the time, there was no chance to avoid the approaching ice, and they were frozen in place. The ice sheet was so thick that it was perfectly safe for people to walk across, and capture these amazing images of thousands of fish frozen in time.
This event had a major impact on the local ecosystem, because birds were unable to find any food, so the skies were strangely silent until the ice finally thawed.
7. Yukagir Bison
Siberia is one of the coldest places on earth that has been regularly inhabited for millennia. This makes it the perfect place to find frozen animals like the Yuka mammoth, and close by there was another discovery in 2011, the mummified remains of a Steppe Bison- the ancestor to the modern bison. Discovered by a tribe in the Yana-Indigirka Lowland, the bison was remarkably intact, with its brain and other organs almost perfectly preserved.
This is the most complete Steppe Bison ever to be found, and has allowed researchers to extensively study its brain, heart, digestive system and blood vessels, despite it being well over 9000 years old. With no visible signs of injury, it is thought that the lack of body fat around its abdomen is a clue as to how it died. Most likely from starvation as a result of the rapidly changing environment in the area at the time.
6. Selerikan Pony
In 1968, gold miners digging tunnels, about 30 feet below the surface of the Indigirka River in Siberia, found something surprising- two legs and a tail of a pony sticking through the roof of one of their tunnels. Experts were called in from the Zoological institute of St. Petersburg to help recover the full animal, which they managed to do, apart from its head.
The body turned out to be of a Przewalski (prez walski) Horse, that nowadays is only found in Mongolia, and amazingly this one appeared to have died about 35,000 years ago. Analysis of the remains suggested that the horses lived relatively similar then to how they still do today.

Amazing discovery! 40.000 year old horse found in Siberian permafrost
The remains of a now-extinct species of horse have been unearthed in the Siberian Permafrost. Semyon Grigoryev, the head of the Mammoth Museum in Yakutsk, told the Siberian Times that this discovery is unlike any other.
This horse was said to have been “completely preserved by permafrost” and was found buried 30 meters underground in the Batagi depression in the Yakutia region of Siberia, according to the Siberian Times.
The foal was discovered by a team of scientists from North-Eastern Federal and Kindai Universities in Japan while on an expedition to the Verjhoyansky district of Yakutia. The horse was just three months old when it died during the late Palaeolithic period, approximately 40,000-years-ago.
“This is the first find in the world of a pre-historic horse of such a young age and with such an amazing level of preservation,” Grigoryev said.
The photos of the perfectly-preserved horse are almost unbelievable. It was found with its tail, mane, and hooves still attached and its dark brown coat seems to be in excellent condition. Also, all of the horse’s internal organs are still inside the animal after tens of thousands of years.
According to Science Alert, the baby horse is just 38 inches tall and is genetically distinct from those now living in the region. This horse was an Equus lenesis, also known as the Lena horse, which roamed the area during the late Pleistocene, but is now extinct.
Grigoryev also told the Siberian Times that this find has many other potential benefits for researchers outside of just the discovery of the horse.
“The extra value of the unique find is that we obtained samples of soil layers where it was preserved, which means we will be able to restore a picture of the foal’s environment,” Grigoryev said.
The region where this ancient horse was found, known as the Batagai depression, is infamously treacherous and is also known as the “Mouth of Hell,” according to the Siberian Times. The tadpole-shaped crater is one kilometer long and 800 meters wide.
The locals in the remote region also refer to the huge crater as the “gateway to the underworld” and are heartily superstitious about it. The depression was originally created by the Soviets when they cleared the forest in the area and local scientists now say that climate change is making it larger.
The amazingly well-preserved horse plucked the “hellish” area is a groundbreaking find for scientists, as they hope it will help them to unlock more secrets of the horse’s environment all those millennia ago.
