Sonoma County - Mammoth Rocks Hike
Sonoma Coast State Park preserves a dramatic section of California Coast from Bodega Bay to Jenner. From Goat Rock within the State Park, the Kortum Trail climbs over a hill and then crosses a coastal terrace. Sections of the trail follows the shoreline along ocean bluffs. Rocky sea stacks and islands dot the coastline. The trail passes Mammoth Rocks. There exists evidence that Ice Age mammoths rubbed their hides on the rocks.
Hiking in Sonoma County, California
Sonoma County’s thriving regional park system consists of more than 50 parks — including trails and open spaces — and encompasses nearly 60,000 acres. Parks run the length and breadth of the county, stretching north from Bodega Bay to The Sea Ranch and Gualala, and east from the Pacific Ocean to Sonoma Valley.
Sonoma County’s eleven state parks cover an extraordinary diversity of geographical terrain that reflects the county’s beauty. Our state parks overlook the Pacific Ocean and many beaches, and they are home to rivers and lakes, mountains and valleys, redwood forests and pygmy forests—and even vineyards. Info: sonomacounty.com

Goat Rock Beach State Park Ice Age Mammoth Rubbings
This is Goat Beach State Park, just south of Jenner, California, which is on the coast west of Santa Rosa. This vast rock, now partly shattered, has a number of highly polished patches, especially on the eastern and southern sides. It has been suggested these were made by mammoths around 40,000 years ago, reflecting a habit elephants still have of rubbing themselves against favourite places, presumably for comfort. It's impossible to substantiate but it's a plausible theory. I saw these rocks on a BBC film about the Ice Age presented by Dr Alice Roberts and realized I was travelling not far by a couple of months later - so I made sure we visited. Well worth it. To get there, leave Highway 1 just south of Jenner on the road marked Goat Beach State Park. Head up there for about 1/4 mile, park in a turn-off and you'll see the rock down the slope below. It's a fairly easy walk and takes 5-10 minutes. Visited on 1 August 2013.

????Gerle Creek Campground: Wildlife & Nature ????
My husband and I spent a wonderful couple of days here in July 2017. The campground is in El Dorado County, CA. We stayed mid-week and
it was very quiet and relaxing, and there were a few campsites still open. The weather was great - temps were mid 80s during the afternoon and got down to the upper 40s around 3:00-4:00 am. During the day we went hiking, fishing, and kayaking. No motorized watercraft is allowed which helps keep it peaceful (Loon Lake a few miles away does allow boats and jet skis). The water in the lake was pretty cold, but it's so scenic and beautiful! Some people took the plunge and jumped right in while others preferred to wade along the shore. At night we relaxed by the campfire drinking and making s'mores. We definitely want to go back next summer!! Thanks for watching! ????⛺️????

Day Hike of Pole Mountain in Jenner Headlands Preserve
Three of us summited Pole Mountain out of Jenner Headlands Preserve on 8/17/19. 16.5 miles and 3600+ feet elevation gain in 9.5 hours.
I had previously hiked the newly opened Jenner Headlands Preserve on two other occasions.
But the summit of Pole Mountain was calling to me. I knew it was a daunting task for a day hike. So I enlisted James III and Kristy to do it with me.
