Herceg Novi, Montenegro - Herceg Novi Old Town & Beach
The marvelous city of Herceg Novi is a coastal town in Montenegro, situated at the foot of mountain Orien. Herceg Novi is recognisable by the abundance of mimosa trees and its numerous flights of stairs. It is a ‘city of the sun’, thanks to the large number of sunny days all year round. Full of thick greenery, Herceg Novi hides numerous kinds of tropical flowers. Towards the end of January the town becomes scented with the subtle fragrance of yellow and green mimosas and the festival of Praznik Mimosa is dedicated to this flower. During the summer months many festivals are organised to further enrich the tourist offer of this enchanted town. The town hosts a large summer tradition, the oldest summer music festival in Montenegro - Muzičke skale or Musical Stairs.
The most visited places in Herceg Novi are : Sahat – Kula (1667), Kanli – Kula (1483), Fortress Spanjola (1538), Fortress Forte Mare (1687) and the Serbian orthodox church of Archangel Michael, located at Belavista – the central square of Herceg Novi. It's only a part of the cultural heritage of this renowned town. Must see place is the Orthodox Monastery of Savina. Located in the Savinska Dubrava Grove, this monastery features unique Mediterranean vegetation and provides a breathtaking view of the Bay.
From the sea, the view of Herceg Novi is breathtaking. A tradition of importing seeds, exotic plants, trees and fruits from around the world has transformed Herceg Novi into a veritable botanic garden, carefully tended and expanded over centuries. Built on a series of terraces, this Town Garden is positioned perfectly, with a view of the open sea and two peninsulas, Luštica and Prevlaka.
As in all other town on the Coast, Herceg Novi also has a mild Mediterranean climate; with dry and warm summers and mild winters. Herceg Novi is famous for its SPA and health centers. Nearby Igalo there is a spring of sea mud called Igalskoje blato and also a famous mineral water spring – Igalskoje saltine.
The island of Mamula is located very near from Herceg Novi. You can easily hire a boat to take you there. The island is well-known for its fortress built to protect it from the enemies and that served later on as a prison. In order to fully appreciate each name, where it came from and what it means to this town, tourists should plan a visit spanning several days—this visit would also give tourists the opportunity to explore the city’s past, its soul and its color.

Mamula Island's Former Concentration Camp To Be Transformed Into Luxury Beach Resort
Montenegro’s government has greenlit plans to transform a former World War II concentration camp into a luxury beach resort with a nightclub, spa and restaurants. The decision has been met with anger from families of those who were imprisoned on Mamula Island while it was occupied by Italian forces under the rule of fascist leader Benito Mussolini. With the goal of transforming the rocky island into a retreat for wealthy clientele, renderings show a restored fortress with an overflow pool and palm trees, VIP area, outdoor dining, a beach club, a marina for superyachts, and a dance floor for parties. Located near Montenegro’s border with Croatia, the circular island, also known as Lastavica, is in the Adriatic Sea at the entrance of the Bay of Kotor. It is dominated by a fort that was built in 1853 under Austro-Hungarian rule to prevent a naval attack. The island is uninhabited and the fortress is unused, but it was the scene of unspeakable horrors during the war, when it was converted into a concentration camp that held more than 2,000 people. Dozens of prisoners were tortured and killed, while others died of starvation. In an attempt to capitalise on interest from tourists, Montenegro’s government advertised it as an investment opportunity in December 2013 and last year agreed a 49-year lease deal with Switzerland-based Orascom Development Holding AG. At the time, the government said the €15million (£11million) project would create 200 jobs. The deal was approved this week, paving the way for the island to be transformed into a four- or five-star resort. A report by Balkan Insight said the plans have angered families of locals who were imprisoned on the island. They urged the government to reconsider, but their appeals were ignored. Before the tender was awarded, Montenegro said any development would have to comply with ‘conservation requirements’ and require government approval, as the island is protected as a cultural monument. Developers were told they would have to preserve and protect the basic form of the structure, layout and inscriptions on the façade while maintaining the cultural and historical character of the fort and the natural environment. Billionaire Samih Sawiris, chief executive and board chairman of Orascom, previously said the resort would include a museum, Balkan Insight reported, but renderings and a map on the project’s website make no mention of one. MailOnline Travel has contacted Orascom for comment. The renderings were produced by Serbian firm Salt&Water in collaboration with Sima Multimedia. Salt&Water said Mamula Island boasts one of the best preserved Austro-Hungarian fortresses in the Adriatic. In order to preserve the unique façade, ‘all potential intervention on the fortress had to be minimised,’ the studio said in a statement.

MAMULA

Visit peninsula Luštica and Mamula Island at the entrance to the Boka Bay in Montenegro 2018 Review
Visit peninsula Luštica and Mamula Island and Fortess at the entrance to the Boky Bay in Montenegro You must visit in 2018, Ostrvo Mamula, Ostrvo Lastavica, Island Mamula, poluostrvo Luštica, peninsula Lustica
At the very entrance to the magnificant Boka Bay in Montenegro, one of the most beautiful bays in the world, there is an inhabited island and the fortress.
The island is called Lastavica ( Swallow Bird), or Rondina – Venetian,, but is popularly known as Mamula.
Mamula is located between Prevlaka and Luštica peninsulas at the entrance to the Boka Bay (Boka Kotorska). This small islet is of circular shape, and has 200m in diameter. It is 3.4 nautical miles (6.3 km) away from Herceg Novi.
The monumental Mamula fortress was finished in 1853 by Austrian Admiral, Lazar Mamula.
The main reason to build a fort there was to stop, the enemy ships to enter into the Boka Bay.
Together with two more forts, those of Arza fortification on Luštica's Cape Mirišta and Prevlaka's Punta Oštro, both of which were erected at the same time also on suggestion by general Lazar Mamula, fort Mamula was part of the Austro-Hungarian Army's contingency plans of preventing the enemy entrance into Bay of Kotor or Boka Bay (local: Boka Kotorska).
The fort takes up about 90% of the island's surface area.
It is very well preserved and all its elements are still there: casern for the accomodation of men, separatelly for the officers and common soldiers, kitchen, toilets, munition stocks, food, and other stuff, water, etc.
However, the fortress never served its purpose, since there was never a military attack.
Due to its isolated position, it was used as a concentration camp in both World Wars and the fort has also served as a prison.
In 1918, one part of the fort was used as a prison for the saillors who participated in famous Boka bay rebellion. The tradition to use Mamula as a prison was continued even in the Second World War.
At first sight, the fort looks terrifying, but once entered, visitors are amazed by the ruins left stranded in time surrounded by beauty.
For years Mamula has been one of the most popular tourist attractions of Herceg Novi. The fortress was well preserved and even includes the old prison cells that held concentration camp prisoners.
While in Montenegro, don’t miss to visit it, together with Dobrec, Mirišta and Zanjic beach, the Blue Cave and old picturise fisherman village Rose.

DOLAZIM BOKO
Tu iza Rosa, spava moj Novi
kroz plavu maglu, lagano plovi
valovi pjenom o škver se lome
dolazim Boko, dolazim dome.
Ref.
Dolazim Boko sa velikih mora
jer ti si jutro, kada sviće zora
ja daću sva blaga i sva svjetska mora
za jutro u Boki, kad sviće zora.
Poljubiću majku, zagrliću tebe
zapjevati s klapom pjesmu staru.
Brod pored Mamule, prolazi dalje
pozlaćen Lovćen, pozdrave šalje
a već kroz Verige, Perast sav u sjaju
ispred njega zovu, zovu me otoka dva.
Poljubiću majku, zagrliću tebe
zapjevati s klapom pjesmu staru
dolazim Boko sa velikih mora
da vidim ti jutro, kad sviće zora.
