Hong Kong Tin Hau Celebrations in Tsing Yi
Exploring North of Hong Kong
In this video, I spent time at Tai Wo, New Territories on a Sunday. Squeezed myself into a local market in Tai Po. Chanced upon another Man Mo Temple and wandered into the town of Tsing Yi.
I stayed at the outdoor museum in Tai Wo for almost two hours resting, filming and reflecting. Hong Kong Railway Museum has no entrance fee. The relics are preserved well exhibiting the local railway, historic station building, six historical coaches, a narrow gauge steam locomotive and a diesel electric Engine No. 51. I observed most of the visitors were families and group of kids.
In the local market of Tai Po, I found bunch of herbal stuffs, dried seafoods etc. Grabbed one bottle of herbal drink and that I wish I could buy more stuffs to bring home which are really way cheaper if I had extra baggage.!
Later that afternoon as I was bound to my host home, I alighted at Tsing Yi Station after I saw what a stunning and scenic view from above on board the MTR. My eyes glued at what seems to be a collection of tiny monuments. After googling, it is actually the Chinese Permanent Cemetery. The island has drastically extended by reclamation and is surrounded by three major harbours.

HONG KONG: CELEBRATIONS OF BIRTH OF TIN HAU GODDESS OF SEA
Cantonese/Nat
Thousands of people took to the street Tuesday in Hong Kong to celebrate the birth of Tin Hau, goddess of the sea.
It's one of the major events still being practised by the small former fishing community of Yuen Long.
Yuen Long, a former fishing village, has welcomed was filled with thousands of devotees and curious onlookers today.
Dressed in traditional clothes, they came to honour and celebrate the birth of Tin Hau. The birthday falls on the 23rd day of the third moon of the Chinese calendar.
Tin Hau is one of the most popular sea goddess -- venerated by the people of Hong Kong.
Despite being one of the world's major financial centres, there are some 35,000 fishermen who are still seagoing.
According to local tradition, Tin Hau was a good-living person, deified after her death. She has been called the Queen of Heaven and Heavenly Lady in Waiting ever since.
Tin Hau's birthday is also celebrated in hope of safeguarding fisher men's trips, especially during storms.
VOXPOP: (Cantonese)
Our golden dragon is to celebrate Tin Hau's birth, not just to worship her. All our fellow villagers came not just to celebrate Tin Hau's birth, but also to celebrate the return of Hong Kong to China.
Dragon dancers march through the streets, marking the biggest festival in this otherwise quiet small town in the New Territories of Hong Kong.
At least 24 temples are dedicated to Tin Hau.
VOXPOP: (Cantonese)
Tin Hau safeguards all of our safety and safe journeys.
Hong Kong residents are so attached to their religious traditions, and don't appear to be worried that the July handover will have any affect on their religious freedom.
