On the last day of August, Antonis and Eirini discover Northern side of Chios. The port of Limnia is located between the beaches of Managros and Lefkathia. It's a popular place 42km from the city center, where visitors could find rooms for rent, a hotel, café, restaurants, and during summer, interesting night life.
Antigoni Maistrali tells us the story of Fanaroksylo, a picturesque hill next to Lefkathia, which has a great view and amazing nature beauty. She also provides us information about sailing from Limnia to Psara or Southern Chios.
Captain Georgios Skandalis from Chios Coast Guard, explained us about the facilities and the regulations of Limnia harbour. He told us about the free electricity, boat launching ramp and potable water provided and explained us why boat owners should not keep port parking positions occupied without a reason.
300 meters northern, at the beach of Lefkathia, visitors can use the beach lounges the umbrellas, the shower and other facilities and they can enjoy their coffee at the beach bar.
We strongly recommend you to visit those places.

Aegean Regatta 2018: Echionas triumphs in Limnia-Chios race
It was with a little reluctance that we packed our bags and left the remote traditional village of Volissos, hidden in the northwest of Chios island, in the North Aegean.
While the Aegean Regatta offers a taster of each Greek island destination on its route, which differs every year, one rest day between race legs to get out and explore never seems to be enough.
Organisers of the annual offshore sailing race, which comprise Greece’s General Secretariat of the Aegean and Island Policy together with sailing clubs at each location, aim to shine a spotlight on islands that receive fewer visitors.
And Chios is certainly one of those island destinations. For many regatta crew members, it was their first visit.
We had booked a studio in peaceful Volissos, just a four-minute drive from the port, and it turned out to be the perfect choice.
On our day off, we took a morning stroll through the village’s narrow, cobblestoned alleyways, where stonebuilt homes stand proud.
Some, however, have long been abandoned, mostly by young islanders who sought their fortunes elsewhere.
The good news is that an art festival held in 2017 involving Greek and Turkish art students has brought some life and colour back to the village.
Contemporary works of art created for the festival continue to grace the doorways of many of these abandoned homes.
One mimics a bakery shopfront, another a shoe repairer. One piece entitled ‘Impossible Love’ depicts a Centaur embracing a mermaid.
After a late breakfast, we readied the boat for the race leg that was to take place the following day.
There’s always work to be done, like sails that need to be folded, before your rest day is completely freed up.
Regatta crews dispersed between two beaches near Limnia, including Lefkathia which hosted a rather loud beach party.
It was an early night for most, firstly because there’s not that much to do in Limnia and Volissos and, secondly, we needed to reserve energy for the race.
The next morning our lovely host took us down to the port and we boarded our club boat Ehionas.
Due to lack of wind, the start of the regatta’s second race leg, from Limnia to Chios town, was postponed. Finally, the race committee raised the start flag and we were off – first the ORC International category boats, followed by us in the ORC Club category.
With just a few knots of wind to play with, we managed to kick off well despite a somewhat intense start.
Hoisting the spinnaker and pole, we sailed downwind, making the most of what we had, even hitting a top speed of 11 knots.
At some point, we looked up and were stunned to find fellow club boat Cosmote Erytos 2, an ORC International boat, not too far ahead of us.
The crew had fallen into a dead spot – no wind at all, and we were heading that way, too.
Cosmote Erytos 2 edged out and disappeared from view.
That’s where the tough part of the race began. Just as we had managed to leave our competitors far behind us, we saw them start creeping up. So, we changed tack.
Skipper Giorgos had some tough decisions to make on which course to take, as the winds shifted and changed.
Most other boats stayed close to Chios’ eastern coastline in a bid to take advantage of land breezes. We could clearly see Turkey’s western coastline and the city of Cesme.
We gained ground then lost it, repeatedly, as we progressed towards Chios town.
At some point, we managed to catch a few stiff breezes and took off ahead of the rest.
Then, as the sun started to drop, so did the wind. Gah, it was only a 40-nautical mile race!
In darkness now, just two nautical miles from the race finish line, we could see Chios town lit up and waiting for us.
Our skipper had us gybe around 14 times, granted in slow motion, as we inched towards the yellow buoy marker bobbing in the sea.
The magic horn blew and we communicated with the race committee, who confirmed our termination.
Not only had we beaten all of our ORC club competitors, but we had arrived well before most of the ORC International boats.
Ehionas was the fifth boat in a total of 52 to dock at Chios port. It was heartening to hear words of praise from our skipper for well-executed gybes in the night. “Don’t think it’s easy,” he said.
Still salty and tired, we went straight to the nearest grill house and devoured steaks, pizza and gyros.
With the exception of our skipper, we didn’t realise until the next day that we had actually won the Limnia-Chios race leg in our category.
Chios reserved a lively welcome for the regatta, with the Brazilionico drummer band playing and parading along the capital’s busy waterfront.
Team Ehionas couldn’t stop smiling when the time came to collect our shiny trophy, where we celebrated with fellow winners Cosmote Erytos 2.
