Manakamana Temple in Nepal
This home video was prepared for homely purposed and is dedicated to my late father & mother-in- laws( Ratna Bahadur Bhandari & Ratna Kumari Bhandari) This video was taken 21 months ago. Let me brief the Manakamana Darshan Yatra. We started for Manakamana early at 5 p.m by the bike from Kathmandu. On the way, we didn't stop except for drinking hot milk coffee at Mahadevbeshi. Then we started the journey and arrived at Kurintar at 8 p.m but had to wait for 1.5 hrs for the cable car because the officer told us their service would open at 9.30. We watched there were many cables cars coming down & going up without carrying any travelers. At last, I knew that it was a trial always done there before carrying the travelers. Then,we moved to book the tickets and sat inside the cabs.Well,at the moment, we were glacing at the nature's beauty below the cabs and imagining that we were floating like birds over the paradise passing the deep- blue rivers, green pine trees and green lea that was left to human beings by the God in haste and at the same time we were taking deep breathe in the fresh air with a different experience totally different from the city.We hope you are also taking so much fun with us observing those nature's beauty. On the way, inside the cab the visitor changed her dress twice but no need to be surprised it was mixing of two video clips. Well, finally after 9 minutes we arrived at the temple and worshiped to Goddess Mata Manakamana the next day.It is believed that Mata fulfills the wishes of the devotees who visit there.Do you know 'Mana' means your 'heart or soul' and 'Kamana' means the wish. Manakamana is an incarnation of goddess Parbati. Thus, no needless to explain about it otherwise it will take a form of essay if you still haven't been there, please, once you must visit there to accomplish your wishes. It doesn't mean that this is a new place for you and you haven't been there. If you visited there, try to visit there for the next time.As you know that the temple of Manakamana is a temple of one of the manifestations of the Hindu goddess Bhagawati. It was an inaccessible place used to take hours to reach there but now it is easily accessible from every parts of our country and from our neighbour countries It is just 125 km.to the west of Kathmandu. It is a steep three hrs. hike from Abu Khairini.and can go up by cable car ride from the base -station,,just takes 9 minutes to reach there. finally, our darshan yatra was very successful and enjoyable.People more gather there at dashain festival every year if you travel there with your true soul, goddess Manakamana bless you with happiness, peace, success, good knowledge and prosperity. We stayed at a lodge and returned to the valley the next day.On the returning, we bought some vegetables & pulses produced by the local people. Once again express from our depth of heart--Jaya Manakamana Mata!.......by Suresh Khawas

The legend of Manakamana Goddess dates back to the reign of the Gorkha king Ram Shah during the 17th century. It is said that his queen possessed divine powers, which only her devotee Lakhan Thapa knew about. One day, the king witnessed his queen in Goddess incarnation, and Lakhan Thapa in the form of a lion.[4] Upon mentioning the revelation to his queen, a mysterious death befell the king. As per the custom of that time, the queen committed Sati (ritual immolation) on her husband’s funeral pyre. Before her sati the queen had assured Lakhan Thapa that she would reappear in the near future. Six months later, a farmer while ploughing his fields cleaved a stone. From the stone he saw a stream of blood and milk flow. When Lakhan heard an account of this event, he immediately started performing Hindu tantric rituals at the site where the stone had been discovered thus ceasing the flow of blood and milk. The site became the foundation of the present shrine. According to tradition, the priest at the temple must be a descendent of Lakhan Thapa.

KATHMANDU - MANAKAMANA TEMPLE - BEFORE AND AFTER EARTHQUAKE
The Manakamana Temple situated in the Gorkha district of Nepal is the sacred place of the Hindu Goddess Bhagwati, an incarnation of Parvati. The name Manakamana means “having one’s wishes fulfilled”. Hence, Manakamana in Gorkha is one of the most visited temples in Nepal where devotees from all over Nepal and abroad throng the temple daily to offer prayers and sacrifices to the goddess in the belief that this will fulfill their wishes. Venerated since the 17th century, it is believed that Goddess Manakamana grants the wishes of all those who make the pilgrimage to her shrine to worship her. Earlier times the only way to reach the Manakamana temple was by walking uphill for about three hours. Now, there is a cable car that runs from the cable station of Cheres, just 5 kms east of Mugling to Manakamana. The cable car rides over the distance of 2.8 kms in 10 minutes more or less.
The temple is a two-tiered pagoda built in a large courtyard. Goddess Manakamana is enshrined in the form of a shila, or a large boulder, inside the temple. There are four other boulders adjacent to it representing the deities Bhairab, Ganesh, Kumari and Betaal.
Legend has it that the temple originated during the reign of King Ram Shah of Gorkha, ancestor of the Shah kings, in the 16th century. The queen was believed to be the incarnation of Goddess Durga. So when the king died, as per the Sati customs then, the queen prepared to burn herself on her husband’s funeral pyre. She told her most faithful servant that she would be reborn as a goddess in the form of a shila, and he and his successors were to worship her. The temple thus came into being at the spot where the shila was found. The “pujari”, or main priest, at the temple is a Magar by ethnicity as per the directives of the Sati queen.
The temple lies in Gorkha from where the unification of Nepal started under King Prithvi Narayan Shah. The Shah kings of Nepal were great devotees of this deity. Devotees make offerings of animal sacrifices to the goddess. Especially Saturdays and Tuesdays see maximum rush when it takes hours just to get a glimpse of the goddess in the temple.

Darshan comes from the Sanskrit word meaning sight. The pilgrimage to Manakamana is made by a great many people every year. This religious expedition to see the Goddess Bhagwati at Manakamana is hence referred to as Manakamana Darshan. According to Hindu mythology the universe is said to consist of five cosmic elements- earth, fire, water, air and ether. The offerings to the Goddess are made on this basis. At least one of the following should be amongst the worship materials
