Tsingy de Bemaraha - Stone forest in Madagascar
The Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is a national park located in Melaky Region, northwest Madagascar. The national park centers on two geological formations: the Great Tsingy and the Little Tsingy. Together with the adjacent Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve, the National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve comprises karstic landscapes and limestone uplands cut into impressive 'tsingy' peaks and a 'forest' of limestone needles, the spectacular canyon of the Manambolo river, rolling hills and high peaks. The undisturbed forests, lakes and mangrove swamps are the habitat for rare and endangered lemurs and birds.
Isolated and inhospitable, this huge collection of razor-sharp vertical rocks looks like the last place where wildlife would thrive.
The colossal 'Grand Tsingy' landscape in western Madagascar is the world's largest stone forest, where high spiked towers of eroded limestone tower over the greenery.
But despite its cold, dangerous appearance, the labyrinth of 300ft stones is home to a number of animal species, including 11 types of lemur.

River Crossings from Morondava to Tsingy de Bemaraha
The full day drive from Morondava to Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park requires 2 rivers crossings. This is footage of our four wheel drive getting on and off both rafts. The first river is the Mania River, and the second is Manambolo River, right outside Bekopeka. Filmed in October 2016.
07 Madagascar - The Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park - Great Tsingy - Part Two
There are two separate parks in The Tsingy Bemaraha National park - Great Tsingy and Little Tsingy. Tsingys are among the best national parks that can be visited in Madagascar. The Great Tsingy can be viewed via stairs, bridges, steel ropes, which facilitate movement between the rocks. This film is dedicated to the Great Tsingy. It is created by photos from Tsingy de Bemaraha , Madagascar.
The spectacular mineral forest of this park stands on the western coast of Madagascar. Tsingy is the Malagasy word for “walking on tiptoes” or where it can not walk barefootand the nearly impenetrable labyrinth of limestone needles, who justifies this name. The reserves, canyons, gorges, undisturbed forests, lakes and mangrove swamps are an astonishing richness of fauna and flora which have not been completely described.
The limestone seabed rose to create a plateau around 200 million years ago, which was little by little eroded by heavy rainfalls until it became its actual shape. This massif is delimited to the east by the abrupt Bemaraha Cliffs, which rises some 300 to 400m above the Manambolo River valley and extends several tens of kilometres from north to south.
The western slopes of the massif rise more gently, and the whole western region of the reserve forms a plateau with rounded hillocks which slope away to the west. To the north undulating hills alternate with limestone extrusions, while in the south extensive pinnacle formations make access extremely restricted.

Anna Bellissens
