Tuamoto Islands, Tahiti, Pearl Farms
alohapearls.com This is a video I took in March 2011 while on a buying trip in Tahiti for Tahitian black pearls. You can see how small the island is from the video. On this island only one family lived on it, and all of their business was pearl farming. The island was about 1 mile long and maybe a quarter of a mile wide. All the electricity was powered by solar for the house. You can see how small the island is because I'm filming from the house. It's maybe 10 feet from the lagoon water. I much simpler way of life and maybe a happier one at that. Filmed in Arutua, French Polynesia. March 2011.

Tahitian Black Pearls
Tahiti and the Tuamotu islands are the only places in the world producing the world famous Tahitian black pearls. Even though they are called black pearls, colors range from white to black, with infinite possbilities of yellow (champagne), purple (aubergine), green, blue, etc.
In Polynesia, the pearl oyster species used to produce black pearls is the Pinctada Margaritifera, or the black-lip pearl oyster, which derives its name from the pigmentation of its mantle. Most of the pearls are produced in the Tuamotu archipelago, whose lagoons are ideal sites for the growth and the reproduction of pearl oysters.
The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes of pearls (including baroque pearls) occur naturally.

Tahiti black pearl endangered by global warming
The black pearl of Tahiti is at the heart of French Polynesia's economy but is now highly vulnerable to climate change. Its fragile existence underlines - in a small but exquisite way - what is at stake in UN climate talks starting in Paris this month.

Tahiti pearls with perfect lusters
Tahitian Black Pearl Cultivation
From the Global Village Travel Guide and DVD, Islands of the South Pacific. Stock footage available from
Transcript:
The opalescent sheen of Tahiti's famous black pearls
captures the eye and loosens the pure strings.
The Black Pearls sold in Tahiti come from the
Gambier and Tuamoto island groups where the
salinity of the water in the clear coral lagoons
favors the Black-Lipped Oyster.
The oyster lives out its days hanging below structures like these.
The cultured pearl begins as a piece of calcified shell which is
cut into cubes and then reduced by stages to spheres.
These spheres form the solid basis on which the opalescent luster
will form. Each is carefully implanted into an oyster so that in several
years, with a great deal of luck, the harvest will be ready.
The Tahiti Pearl Museum presents the curious with a history of
this industry and, of course, they are always willing to help
a customer choose a pearl.........

Tahitian Pearl Tour Review

They also did some fishing, snorkeling and hunted for squid along the coastline. It was a trip of a lifetime. Here is a review from some of the women on the trip.
