We tag along with the “Save The Manatee” experts that show us how they track, save and count these sea cows. Save the Manatee Club was founded in 1981 by Bob Graham, former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator, and singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett. The Club was started with the mission to protect manatees and their habitat. Today, Save the Manatee Club is the world’s leading manatee conservation organization.
BLUE SPRING STATE PARK
Conservation measures can produce astounding results. In 1970, two years before Blue Spring State Park was established, researchers tracked 14 manatees in the spring run. By 2005, after years of park improvements and manatee protection efforts, wintering manatee numbers exceeded 200. By 2018, that number skyrocketed to a record 485.
Besides sea cows, fish abound in the spring run, and these attract a variety of wading birds, ospreys, eagles and kingfishers. To see the park’s wonders, one can hike along the spring run or on the 4.5-mile Pine Island Trail. One can also launch a canoe or kayak, rent one at the park or take a guided riverboat cruise.
Blue Spring State Park is a state park located west of Orange City, Florida in the United States. The park is a popular tourist destination; available activities include canoeing, SCUBA diving, kayaking, fishing, camping, hiking, wildlife watching, and swimming.

When winter comes, hundreds of manatees retreat to Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, Florida. Researchers with the Save The Manatee Club take advantage of the migration to gather data on the threatened species.

Natural Springs Offer a Unique Encounter With Manatees | Short Film Showcase
Manatees glide through warm waters in and around Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River, Florida, a winter shelter from colder ocean temperatures. In the heart of Florida's Gulf Coast lies one of the only places in the world where humans are encouraged to interact with these curious creatures. The practice has been controversial, but permission to swim with the animals predates the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Hundreds of manatees, at great risk of being hit by boats elsewhere, congregate in this protected, shallow, jade green lagoon. In this short film from Dive Documentaries, tour operator Captain Broderick highlights the correct way to observe the creatures in their natural habitat.

Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park Tour & Review
Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park is located just 40 minutes away from Gainesville Florida and is one of our newest Florida State Parks. The Spring is beautiful and the park includes kayak rentals, hiking trails, and and Rv as well as tent camping. Gilchrist Blue Springs state park was added to our park system in 2017 and is slowly getting updated to state park standards. Campsites 18 & 17, were the best in that order! There is no dump station yet, but sites do have power and water! This is a top 10 spring to visit in Florida!

Fanning Springs State Park is a Florida State Park, located on US 19/98 in the town of Fanning Springs. It contains one of the state's 33 first magnitude springs.As of 2008, decreased water emission levels at the springs technically requalify the first magnitude status as historical first magnitude. Located on the Suwannee River, this inviting source of cool, clear water has attracted people for thousands of years. Fanning Springs now produces less than 65 million gallons of water daily, making it a second magnitude spring. Historically, Fanning Spring was a first-magnitude springs as recently as the 1990s.

The Alexander Springs Wilderness in the U.S. state of Florida was designated in 1984 by the United States Congress. Manatees migrate each year to the warm spring waters during the cold season, while alligators, otters and turtles can be observed all year around. In spite of their size, manatees have relatively little body fat and their metabolic rate is low compared to other marine mammals.
Alexander Springs is a first-magnitude spring that flows from the large, cavernous opening in the bottom of the central part of the pool, producing more than 80 million gallons of fresh water a day. Aquatic vegetation surrounds the area of the main spring vent, where the pool bottom falls away to reveal a large open area of exposed limestone rock and boulders to a depth of about 28 feet. The Alexander Spring Wilderness was filmed by Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro in Florida / 2014.
