Manchester Ship Canal (The People's Canal)
Probably Ray Gosling's finest work. Originally shown on Granada TV in the early 1990's tracing the history of the Manchester Ship Canal. The programme was in two parts with part one giving details of the canal's construction and part two explaining how we, the public were short changed when the land around the docks was sold off to developers to construct Salford Quays.
A COUPLE OF PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE VOLUME OF THE MUSIC THAT ACCOMPANIES THE VIDEO. THIS WAS NOT ADDED BY ME, BUT IS THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK. THE DOCUMENTARY WAS RECORDED FROM THE TV ON TO VIDEO, TRANSFERED TO DVD AND FINALY DIGITALISED FOR YOUTUBE. AT SOME POINTS THE MUSIC APPEARS TOO LOUD. I RECOMEND THAT YOU LISTEN TO IT THROUGH HEADPHONES AS THE SOUND QUALITY WHICH IS ONLY IN MONO, IS MUCH BETTER. SORRY IF THIS HAS SPOILED IT FOR SOME BUT IT IS A GREAT DOCUMENTARY AND UNLESS GRANADA TV KEPT A COPY, THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS

Manchester Ship Canal (Ep 1) - Abandoned Manchester Docks
In the first of a series of videos exploring as much as I can of the Manchester Ship Canal I checked out Pomona, the furthest and most desolate part of what was once the Manchester Docks.

Manchester Ship Canal
Umar Saleem, Mott Macdonald, talks us through the Manchester Ship Canal that arose out of need when Manchester established itself as a world leader in industry in the 19 century. It was a huge project that cost 15 million pounds (1.5 billion by today's standards) and employed 1600 people to build it.

A Cruise on the Manchester Ship Canal
The cruise, which began at the Seacombe Ferry terminal, was supposed to travel the whole 35 miles of the Ship Canal, but due to mechanical problems, terminated at Barton Lock. The cruise was aboard the ferry 'Royal Iris of the Mersey'. Due to the hot weather, or so we were told, the swing bridge at Chester Road, Warrington, failed to open. After nearly an hour, and apparently, buckets of cold water, the bridge finally opened. When we got to Barton Lock, the same thing happened again. This time, the Barton Road Swing bridge failed to open, and this time it failed to move at all. So it was a u-turn in the canal, and because there is no road access at Barton Lock, it was back to Irwell Lock were the cruise ended. Pity we didn't make it to Salford Quays, but it was a nice cruise. Enjoy. By the way, the female voice you hear on some of the clips, is a Blue badge guide. She certainly knows her stuff, but I had to stop listening after a short while.

Ellesmere Port On The Manchester Ship Canal
One of my favourite poems is Cargoes by John Masefield In the 1st year of Primary we had to learn this and draw a picture for each verse. My favourite being.the British Coaster. Early this month I went to the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port. Run by the Canal and River Trust it's situated on the banks of the Shropshire Union Canal and the Manchester Ship Canal. which is built along side the River Mersey .Fascinating , educational and recreational a day there whizzes by. All the time, sea going cargo vessels are travelling along the Manchester Ship Canal to the Irish Sea.I was elated The first large is Cosmo, Registered in Ravenna Italy it was bound for Antwerp The second is STENSTRAUM. Registered in Gibralter but an Italian vessel it carried chemicals and was bound for Portugal. It had a tug, bow and aft .Music is from audio swap . On The Docks We have to Keep Watch by Shanghai Phil .I chose this as both Manchester and Liverpool have huge China Towns which have grown from years of sea trading .

Manchester - Media City UK-02
MediaCityUK is a 200-acre (81 ha) mixed-use property development site on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford and Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The project is being developed by Peel Media, and its principal tenants are media organisations and the University of Salford. The land occupied by the development was part of the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
The BBC signalled its intention to move jobs to Manchester in 2004, and the Salford Quays site was chosen in 2006. The Peel Group was granted planning permission to develop the site in 2007, and construction of the development, with its own energy generation plant and communications network, began the same year. Based in Quay House, the principal tenant is the BBC, whose move marks a large-scale decentralisation from London. ITV Granada completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK on 25 March 2013, followed in two stages by the northern arm of ITV Studios: the second stage involved Coronation Street being moved to a new production facility on Trafford Wharf (next to the Imperial War Museum North) at the end of 2013. The Studios on Broadway houses seven high-definition studios, claimed to be the largest such facility in Europe.
