Last Emperor exhibition to open (25.8.2016)
The Museum of Coastal Defence will hold an exhibition marking the 110th anniversary of the birth of China’s last emperor and the 105th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution.
Running until February 13, it will show invaluable artefacts, and historical photos and videos.
Opening the exhibition today, Under Secretary for Home Affairs Florence Hui said it charts the life of Puyi who was crowned and deposed three times and lived through several critical historical periods from the late Qing through the early Republic to the War of Resistance Against Japan and the founding of New China.
Among the 70 sets of exhibits are an imported gramophone and a camera from Puyi's sojourn in Tianjin, commemorative medals, official memorials to the throne and the order of appointment from the Manchukuo period as well as his diary and smoking utensils from his time as a commoner.
The exhibition is jointly presented by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department and the Jilin Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, and co-organised by the Museum of Coastal Defence and the Museum of the Imperial Palace of the Manchu State. (

Manchukuo (traditional Chinese: 滿洲國; pinyin: Mǎnzhōuguó; Japanese: 満州国; rōmaji: Manshūkoku; State of Manchuria; in other Axis languages: Italian: Manciukuò and German: Mandschukuo) was a puppet state of the Empire of Japan in Northeast China and Inner Mongolia from 1932 until 1945. It was founded as a republic, but in 1934 it became a constitutional monarchy. It had limited international recognition and was under the de facto control of Japan.
The area, collectively known as Manchuria, was the homeland of the Manchus, including the emperors of the Qing dynasty. In 1931, the region was seized by Japan following the Mukden Incident and a pro-Japanese government was installed one year later with Puyi, the last Qing emperor, as the nominal regent and later emperor. Manchukuo's government was dissolved in 1945 after the surrender of Imperial Japan at the end of World War II. The territories formally claimed by the puppet state were first seized in the Soviet invasion of Manchuria in August 1945, and then formally transferred to Chinese administration in the following year.Manchus formed a minority in Manchukuo, whose largest ethnic group were Han Chinese. The population of Koreans increased during the Manchukuo period, and there were also Japanese, Mongols, White Army Russians and other minorities. The Mongol regions of western Manchukuo were ruled under a slightly different system in acknowledgement of the Mongolian traditions there. The southern part of the Liaodong Peninsula was ruled by Japan as the Kwantung Leased Territory.

Who Led The War of Resistance Against Japan?

The 9.18 Incident refers to the Japanese military invasion
of China 80 years ago. Who actually fought in this war?
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is trying
to take the credit for The War of Resistance Against Japan.
Scholars believe that patriotism and nationalism have
been part of CCP's ideology propaganda since June 4th.
Lies and violence are two major means in despotic regimes.
Is it impossible for CCP to give them up?
Over the past years, CCP spread the propaganda that KMT
(Kuomintang) was not anti-Japanese during this war.
Until recent years, CCP did not change its propaganda line
on The War of Resistance Against Japan.
However, the report Editorial of September 18: Do not forget
national humiliation, to cooperate with the grand revival
published by People's Daily, states that CCP called on all
the nations to unite and resist Japan, and save the country, opposing the policy of not resisting Japan.
With that CCP attempts to set the tone that
The War of Resistance Against Japan was led by CCP.
Professor Qian Wenzhong, from the Department of History
at Fudan University, wrote online on September 18th,
that China's resistance against Japan began on that day
80 years ago. It had lasted 14 years, not 8 years.
Chinese absolute main force on the front line against the
Japanese at that time was the KMT government's military.
On September 18th, 80 years ago, Japanese military forces
launched the war against China.
They used the excuse that Chinese military bombed a
section of the South Manchuria Railway, built by Japan.
Japan occupied Shengyang and embarked the path of full
invasion of China, known in history as the 9.18 Incident.
Qian Wenzhong said that according to the historical records,
during the 14 years of resistance against Japan,
KMT's military undertook large battles 22 times
and important battles 1,127 times.
In this war they lost 206 generals,
eight of which were high level military generals.
Wu Renhua, a historian, said that since CCP took power
in 1949, among the historical truth CCP tries to hide,
The War of Resistance Against Japan has the strictest
restrictions, that scholars try to break through at present.
Wu Renhua: In the historical facts during the war
of China's resistance against Japan,
Chinese authorities are just covering up the truth.
And these truths have been hidden for many years.
The main role in The War of Resistance Against Japan
was not the CCP's leadership of the Eighth Route Army
and the New Fourth Army, but the KMT's leadership
of the National Revolutionary Army.
Thus the history from CCP's perspective started after the
Xi'an Incident in 1937, with the Eighth Route Army formed.
On September 18, various activities were held across China.
Three Northeast Provinces, Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang,
held together a ceremony of sounding bells and sirens.
Meanwhile, there were more than 100 cities with air sirens
sounded at that moment.
According to reports, these activities were
the largest in history, marking the 9.18 Incident.
Wu Renhua: Thus September 18th each year is a chance
for CCP to propagate its patriotism and nationalism.
During this time CCP authorities hold many official activities
for commemoration. It has a main political agenda in this.
With the high-profile of 9.18 commemoration by the CCP,
some netizens even mentioned of The Little Flying Tigers
broadcast by CCTV two days ago, where three 10-year-old
children defeat Japanese soldiers,
which was more fake than CCTV's News themselves,
wrote the netizents.
Wu Renhua: They have taken the film and TV works
as promotional means to spread their products recently.
I think it doesn't deserve much attention and comments.
Based on the statistics of the film and TV works
about the anti-Japanese war made by CCP,
the total number of Japanese soldiers killed is several times
higher than the number of Japanese troops entering China.
However, the truth can be only one.
Why does the CCP turn a brutal war into a game?
Wu Renhua: Because authoritarian regimes use 2 means
only. One is to cheat, so they are depending on lies.
The other is the use of fear, creating the fear with violence,
namely, using means like jails to create such fear.
Although the CCP made a high-profile memorial for the 9.18,
the Diaoyu Islands' civil groups were blocked,
and even were threatened by the police while they were
on their way to Shengyang for the memorial activities.
Many netizens show great dissatisfaction from authorities
for obstructing the commemoration from civil organizations.

Burying Jasmine Causes

Recently, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)
has tightened its control on public opinion,
causing an unprecedented atmosphere of tension.
An art exhibition in Beijing was suppressed
because of it's 'sensitive areas'. A number of
private media and internet forums are blocked,
showing that the CCP is tensely holding its nerve.
It spares no efforts in suppressing sensitive issues.
Exhibition artists said on March 26 that those taken
on Thursday by Beijing's police are still detained
at Taihu Detention Center in Tongzhou, Beijing,
including artists Huang Xiang, Zuihun and Cheng Li.
Works of the detained artists touch upon China's
current political events and social problems,
such as 'petitioners' rights', 'Jasmine Revolution'
and 'the control and suppression of free speech.'
Over 60 artists participated in the exhibition.
Plain-clothed police have appeared since March 20
at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Beijing.
They arrested 3 artists on March 24.
Mainland independent writer, Zan Aizong, said:
The constitution says citizens have free speech.
Performing art is in itself an expression within
the scope of free speech. Any creation by artists,
whether in the form of sculpture, behavior
or other, is a creation. It's normal behavior,
the state should protect, not interfere with it.
Among the 3 arrested, Huang Xiang's work 'Panic'
is the most daring -- a body tied with jasmine,
carried by an aid into a grave. As protests broke out
in many countries in the Middle East,
the Jasmine Revolution has struck fear in the CCP.
The exibit's artworks resonate with today's people.
Qin Yongmin, China Human Rights Watch Chairman,
said that this phenomenon can be a positive thing.
Qin Yongmin: This is good news, the Chinese people
are awakening. They're using a variety of ways
and means to express their views. But then again,
we are in the 21st century. The vast majority of
the world's people have the right of free expression.
Yet in China, people still cannot use their own words
to convey views, or even express themselves
in an obscure and symbolic way.
From this angle it is also very sad.
With the spread of the Jasmine Revolution,
communist authorities again tighten control on
society and the internet, strengthening suppression,
and causing an unprecedented tense atmosphere.
According to Radio Free Asia, private media,
Love Date, announced an indefinite cease update.
Founded in 2008, Love Date published 800 issues,
and editors compiled 10 stories daily. They covered
various issues, like the death of Qian Guiyun, and
'urban administrator bully'. It also published articles
by Ran Yunfei, a Sichuan writer recently sentenced
to 10 years in prison for 'subversion of state power'.
Readers regret the forced closure of Love Date.
There must be a voice against the oppression.
According to Hong Kong's Ming Pao report,
Langzhong Hotline's news site boycott's power
in protest of the local Propaganda department.
The site's home page reads: Notice to power sector:
Langzhong Hotline will fight to death to bring people
the truth. Even faced with detention, fines, and closing
we will convey public opinion, says 24-year old owner,
Wang Hao; all 12 staff members will fight to the end.
According to Radio France Internationale, during
the 'two meetings'. in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, 3000 people
held a Red Song concert. In less than an hour
of its start, the police ordered to be stopped
using unlawful assembly as an excuse.
Some observers have pointed out that
the concert, even approved by Xuzhou Municipal
Party Committee Propaganda Department,
can not be trusted by the local police.
This indicates that CCP is not taking any chances
with possiblle 'Jasmine assemblies', which exposes
the degree of the internal communist party panic.

Qianlong Emperor
The Qianlong Emperor (Chien-lung Emperor; born Hongli (Hung-li; Chinese: 弘曆; Möllendorff transliteration hung li); 25 September 1711 – 7 February 1799) was the sixth emperor of the Manchu-led Qing Dynasty, and the fourth Qing emperor to rule over China proper. The fourth son of the Yongzheng Emperor, he reigned officially from 11 October 1735 to 8 February 1796.1 On 8 February, he abdicated in favor of his son, the Jiaqing Emperor – a filial act in order not to reign longer than his grandfather, the illustrious Kangxi Emperor. Despite his retirement, however, he retained ultimate power until his death in 1799. Although his early years saw the continuation of an era of prosperity in China, his final years saw troubles at home and abroad converge on the Qing Empire.

Cinema of China
The Cinema of China is one of three distinct historical threads of Chinese-language cinema together with the Cinema of Hong Kong and the Cinema of Taiwan.
Cinema was introduced in China in 1896 and the first Chinese film, The Battle of Dingjunshan, was made in 1905, with the film industry being centered on Shanghai in the first decades. The first sound film, Sing-Song Girl Red Peony, using the sound-on-disc technology, was made in 1931. The 1930s, considered the first golden period of Chinese cinema, saw the advent of the Leftist cinematic movement and the dispute between Nationalists and Communists was reflected in the films produced. After the Japanese invasion of China and the occupation of Shanghai, the industry in the city was severely curtailed, with filmmakers moving to Hong Kong, Chongqing and other places, starting a Solitary Island period in Shanghai, referring to the city's foreign concessions, with the remaining filmmakers working there. Princess Iron Fan, the first Chinese animated feature film, was released at the end of this period. It influenced wartime Japanese animation and later Tezuka Osamu. After being completely engulfed by the occupation in 1941, and until the end of the war in 1945, the film industry in the city was under Japanese control.
