Lao is a Tai-Kadai language spoken by approximately 15 million people in Laos and Thailand. It is closely related to Thai and speakers of Lao are able to understand spoken Thai without too many difficulties. Thai speakers find it more difficult to understand Lao due to lack of exposure to the language. The language family is also known as Kradai, Kra-Dai, Daic or Kadai.

VO The Cheuang Sombounkhan Foundation establishes to promote writing and reading skills among young people.
INTRO: The Cheuang Sombounkhan Foundation has been established to develop and promote writing and reading skills among young people. According to Mr Cheuang's wife, Madame Maidaravan Phonekeo, The foundation also plans to identify outstanding writers whose work is valuable to society but lack the funds to get their work published.
STORY: A press conference to announce the launch of the foundation took place recently at the house of the former Central Committee's Secretariat and Head of the Party Central Committee's Propaganda and Training Board, Cheuang Sombounkhan, who died last year.
The ceremony, which took place at the family home in Khamhoung village, Xaythany district, was led by Mr Cheuang's wife, Madame Maidaravan Phonekeo.
Present at the event were Deputy Prime Minister Somsavad Lengsavat, ministers and senior government officials.
The Cheuang Sombounkhan Foundation was approved by the Minister of Home Affairs in January this year, with the aim of developing young people's writing abilities and their confidence in public speaking. The project will include the organising of competitions for students in secondary schools, colleges and universities.
The foundation will also support the printing of reading books for young people, which will have a patriotic content. It will also support the translation of internationally known books from English into Lao. People who would like to contribute to the foundation can buy the books that it prints.
According to Madame Maidaravan Phonekeo, When Mr Cheuang Sombounkhan was alive, he was an enthusiastic supporter of public funding for the promotion of writing and encouraged the publication of reading books.
The foundation also plans to identify outstanding writers whose work is valuable to society but lack the funds to get their work published.

Mr Cheuang Sombounkhan died in an aircraft accident during a working visit to Xieng Khuang province on May 17, 2014.
His family decided to ask for permission to establish the foundation in memory of his good works.
