Waitomo Caves - Marokopa Falls - Ruakuri Walk
Finally I arrived at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves but before I made the stunning guided tour through the FootWhistle Cave,
I checked out the Ruakuri Walk. This spectacular loop walk took me through a forested gorge, past natural sculpted cliffs and under low limestone arches.
On the way towards Raglan, the surfer town of New Zealand, I checked out the Marokopa Falls, which are one of the most impressive waterfalls in New Zealand!
Enjoy :)

Mangapohue Natural Bridge; Marokopa Falls; Limestone Formations
Some footage from a trip I took two years ago (2016). I have used it in some of my music videos, but only now have I made it a video of its own. I went with some friends around the Marokopa area, in the Waitomo district, Waikato region. We visited the Mangapohue Natural Bridge, a 17 m high limestone arch, which spans the Mangapohue Stream. It is all that remains of an ancient cave system. The track continues for over farmland, where you can see 25 million year old fossilised oysters exposed in the limestone outcrops. We also visited the 35 metre high Marokopa falls, often described as the most beautiful in the country. Here the Marokopa River cascades over the undercut greywacke basement rock. We also visited some limestone caves, I forgot the name of them. But they had stalactites and stalagmites!
The process that made this landscape began 35 million years ago, back when it was a seabed. The shells and skeletons of sea creatures that died built up on the seafloor. Over time they were buried, compacted and cemented into limestone. Then around 12 million years ago, movement in the Earth’s crust pushed the seabed up. When the limestone became exposed to the corrosive power of rain, the Waitomo landscape, as we know it today, began to form.

The BEST WALK in NEW ZEALAND!
The Ruakuri Bushwalk is located in the Waitomo region of New Zealand not far from the famous Waitomo Caves. The walk takes 30 minutes (according to the sign), but in reality you can easily spend a couple of hours.
The walk has many caves and similar rock features. The rivers disappear underground and reappear making for a very interesting and confusing walk. At one point the river enters a large cavern where you can go underground to a platform hanging a frightening way above the water below.
The walk also contains glowworms, making it a great night time walk, with glowworms in the caves but also on the trees and rock faces along parts of the track. Doing the whole walk at night including the underground viewing platform is quite a thrill.
Caves, waterfalls, viewing platforms, tunnels, underground viewing, bridges, wetas, glowworms, birds...what more could you want.
This is my favourite short bush walk in New Zealand, others may disagree, feel free to tell me your favourite in the comments below.
