Taranaki Falls Walk, Tongariro National Park :: Long White Gypsy
The Taranaki Falls track offers a quintessential example of the volcanic and geological scenery you can expect from Tongariro National Park. An easy 6.2km / 3.85mi round trip, the track helpfully offers hikers a round-trip option (via the Upper and Lower tracks) or a one-way in and out via either of the two loops. I highly recommend (if completing the full loop) you start with the Upper track, as this affords (in my opinion) the best approach to the falls).
Standing at the top of the falls is an exhilarating experience, and one often reserved for those sacrificial selfies! Making sure not to get too close to the edge, lest the strong wind on this day knock me clean over the edge of the ancient lava flow over which the falls tumble, I gazed around at the state of the landscape around me and marveled at it's history. Mother Earth kindly took 250,000 years to expertly craft this vista, and I for one am grateful for it.
You can access the falls via Whakapapa Village at the top of State Highway 48 in the Tongariro National Park (New Zealand's North Island). Take the left hand turning immediately past the Château (Ngāuruhoe Crescent) and park in the carpark at the end of the road.
The trailhead is also one of the trailheads for the Tongariro Northern Circuit, one of New Zealand's GREAT WALKS.
The circuit will take you 1hr30min to complete with some small breaks along the way. Allow 2hrs if you are planning to stop at the falls for lunch.
**SIDE NOTE: It is often windy, cold and wet at the bottom of the falls. Even though there is a seating area here, you may prefer to make your stop at the top of the falls, where there are plenty of rocks to spread out on, with spectacular views.

Taranaki Falls - Tongariro National Park
Stopping on the way down the North Island. We started the walk from Whakahake Village. The route was a hour and half loop and half way you come across the Taranaki Falls. The walk at first was great. Well sign posted and informative, crossing the landscape to the valley where you find the waterfalls. The first fall you find is cascades, when you cross over the bridge. Shortly after you find Taranaki Falls. Impressive falls, crashing down. After the falls you walk up behind the top of falls and back over another bridge. At this point we were hit by snow storm, where was not to nice. But the walk continues back to Whakahake village and was very easy to follow.

Ohakune Roadtrip with Auckland University Tramping Club - Hiking in New Zealand - Chilly Bin Hikes
Last weekend I went on a road trip with some people from the Auckland University Tramping Club. The trip was a little bit different than my usual ones and it consisted of several short walks with driving and socializing in between.
We walked the Rotopounamu Lake loop, Mangawhero Falls and Lake Surprise and stayed at the Mangawhero campsite on Saturday night. We also paid a visit to Kinloch on the way down, and Big Azz ice creams on the way home.

New Zealand - North - Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley
Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley (14/09/2007)
Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley is the hydro thermal system created as the direct result of the volcanic eruption of Mount Tarawera on 10 June 1886. It includes Lake Rotomahana, the former site of the Pink and White Terraces. It was the location of the Waimangu Geyser which was active from 1901 to 1904.
The name 'Waimangu' means 'black waters' in Māori, the indigenous language of New Zealand. This name comes from the water that was thrown up by the famous Waimangu Geyser, which was black with mud and rocks.
The valley is home to a population of wallaby and Black Swan, which according to local guides were introduced to the region from Western Australia by George Edward Grey in the 19th century.
Tongariro National Park - Tama Lakes Walk (16/09/2007)
Tongariro is New Zealand's oldest national park and a dual World Heritage area. This status recognises the park's important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features.
Mangawhero Falls (16/09/2007)
Mangawhero Falls, a 25m waterfall a pleasant attraction on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park was the scenic location of the Lord of the Rings' Forbidden Pool, where Gollum was caught by Faramir with the help of Frodo (Two Towers film location).
