Most of us, who had a bath from a natural water resources like river or lakes, may have experience occasional fish bits. But have you ever thought of having an experience from natural fish spa therapy?
Madu ganga boat tours provide natural foot massage from hundreds of fish. The Madu Ganaganga boat rides are popular among local and overseas visitors to the area. This ride gives you several memorable experiences and this natural fish therapy is one of them.
There are several fish spas located in within Balapitiya, Madu Ganga areas.
They setup several artificial cage ponds in the natural river the doctor fish are grown there. You can get in to the floating stage from your boat and sit and put your legs in to the pond. On this episode we experience Madu Ganga river safari, mangrove kayaking & canoeing in Madu River (ganga) in Galle, Adventure Sri Lanka. Safari boat tour starts early morning with the sunrise. And there are fantastic picturesque views of the lake which is surrounded with mangroves. Also there are some islands like Thotupola Maduwa and Cinnamon Island.
The lake is a minor watercourse which originates near Uragasmanhandiya in the Galle District of Sri Lanka Adventure, before widening into Balapitiya. The water then flows for a further a 4.4 km before draining into the Indian Ocean.

The forest covers over 61 hectares, that is over 150 acres. 14 of the 24 species of mangroves are found in this area. The value of the mangroves was understood in December 2004, during the devastating tsunami, when forest acted as a natural barrier protecting the region.

Cruising through mangroves in Madu River (Maadu ganga) in Sri Lanka
Madu River which flows across Balapitiya (approx 80kms down south) is one of the rarely visited and unspoiled attractions any nature lover can find in Sri Lanka. She boasts of having a cluster of 64 small islands scattered along her path and the most of which are uninhabited and covered with mangroves.
The largest island is known as Ma Doowa; which is the largest inhabited island within the country and about 300 families live there. The smallest is called Satha Paha Doowa. According to folklore this islet had been purchased for five cents but some say the name has derived due to its shape.

Madhu river, one of the last mangrove forests remaining in Sri Lanka and is home to so many plant and animal species. It is the second largest Ramsar wetland in the country. The river enters to the sea at Balapitiya and boat rides are available for tourists to experience this unique wetland.

Madu River is a shallow water body located in southern coastal area and it enters to the sea from “Balapitiya” . Madu River famous for Mangroves and the small islands located in the river with different sizes. Madu river is in 03rd Place in Ramsar Wetland Listing in Sri Lanka.
The mangrove lagoon in Madu River joined to the sea by a narrow canal and containing 15 islands of varying size, some of which are inhabited. It is formed of two shallow waterbodies, Maduganga and smaller Random Lake, connected by two narrow channels. On the islands and shores relatively undisturbed mangrove vegetation contains a rich biodiversity qualifying the wetland for 7 Criteria of International Importance.
The cultural heritage is very prominent, with numerous ancient temples in the area and on the islands. Maduganga helps in flood control by storing water during monsoon rains and retains nutrient run-off from nearby cinnamon plantations. The major occupation of the local people is fishing and agriculture (cinnamon and coconut).
Madu River Wetland governed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation has declared a sanctuary on the 17th of July 2006.

Also there are Buddhist Transcripts written in Ola Leafs available in the temple which ar old thousands of years.
Satha Paha Duwa
Satha paha duwa is the smallest Island in the Madu River and there can be seen the remains of a Hindu Temple which was built in the island long years ago.
Nai Duwa
There’s a belief that the Snakes which found in the area around Madu River are being taken to this island and released. Nai is the Sinhala word for snakes and people believe this island is full of snakes.
Madu River is Famous for it’s Mangroves. There are 302 species have been identified here Mangroves and 14 species have been identified by the World Conservation Union has been evaluating biodiversity. Most varieties foudnin Madu Ganga are common and they are Kadol, Maha kaḍol, Mal Kadol, Pun Kanda, , Goda Kirala, Gin pol . From mangroves, Ratamilla were only found in Madu River and is a very rare species.
