OKINAWA TRIP pt. 2 - Iriomote Island
I left the main island of Okinawa behind for the Yaeyama Islands. I was staying on Ishigaki but decided to take a day trip over to Iriomote Island.
Iriomote Island is basically one big jungle. I took a jungle river cruise and hiked to Maryudo Falls. We also took a water buffalo cart over to Yubu Island (a small island very close to Iriomote). Yubu Island is like one big botanical garden. I very different feel from Iriomote's jungle.

Japan Trip: Listening to Nature on the Kayak River Tour, Iriomote Island, Okinawa03
Japan southernmost group of islands, Okinawa, has many sights of interests for its visitors. Iriomote Island (西表島) is Okinawa’s second largest island. Being undeveloped, natural lovers will be happy to learn 90% of the island is a jungle with its own mangrove forest.
The Iriomote Yamaneko, a type of wildcat, is found only on Iriomote Island. However, it may be difficult to encounter this nocturnal animal as they are an endangered species with less than 100 yamaneko in existence.
The best way to explore the island is by its rivers. The two longest rivers of the island are the Urachigawa (Uchigawa River) and the Nakamagawa (Nakama River). Boat cruises are available among these two rivers. Other options include a guided Kayak tours along these two rivers as well as some of the smaller rivers.
There are a number of Kayak tours visitors can select from. From waterfalls to visiting one of the smaller islands, kayak tour participants need to paddle to their destination. Safety vests and paddling instructions are provided. Due to weather conditions, tours may be cancelled or destinations altered.
The length and cost of the Kayak tour vary according to the tour agency. Some packages include lunch whereas in other tours, participants need to provide their own refreshments. Please check with the tour agency to confirm the items required for a safe experience.

西表島でカヤック&キャンプ 2日目 浦内川にカヤックで滝を見に行くKayak&Camp in Iriomote Day2 Kayaking Urauchi River to see waterfall
【English follows】

I have a folding kayak, camping equipment ,Drone and Gopro and travel around the islands of Okinawa.
Until the last time the Kerama Islands continued, but this time I went to the camp with a sea kayak on Iriomote Island in Okinawa Prefecture.
It is the Second day.
I decided to set up a base camp on Iriomote Island at Hoshizuna Tei campsite, and stayed for one night. The weather was unfortunate, like the day before, and the wind was strong, so in the talk with the owner of the campsite, I did not expect anything at all, but decided to do kayaking the river. The idea was that the river would not be rough even if the sea was rough, and I think that in Iriomote Island was famous for kayaking in mangroves.
I'm not sure because I'm moving with an idea, but I decided to do kayaking the Urauchi River near the base camp. After a little research on the net, I went up the Urauchi River and found that there were two waterfalls: Mariyudu Waterfall and Kambire Waterfall.
I got up in the morning, had breakfast, flew a little drone on the star sand beach, and headed to the Urauchi River. I always think of the first place, but is there a place where I can park my car properly? Is there a place to build a kayak? The anxieties and expectations came to me.
As I actually went there, the car was easy to park and the kayak could be assembled beside the road.
The departure was late and it was in the afternoon, but I went safely to the dock of a sightseeing ship called Gunkaniwa, put a kayak near it, and after that it was about 2 km by trekking, and it was Mariyudu waterfall (Observatory where I can see) and I arrived at Kambire waterFalls. One-way trip is less than 9 km, kayak 6 km and trekking 2 km, but I enjoyed it unexpectedly.
I would be glad if it would be useful for those who are mainly interested in the outdoors, such as Okinawa, the sea, camping, kayaking, drone.
Since there are still few uploaded videos, I will post the past video links below.

Travel Adventures in Iriomote Island, Okinawa, Japan
Footage taken from my first trip to the island of Iriomote in March of 2017. I’d been pouring over maps and locations to find the ultimate spot for a waterfall / milky way image I’d had burning in my brain for quite some time. Sangria Waterfalls in the NW of the island turned out to be THE spot for the shot. Fortunate that the weather stayed true, the jungle didn’t claim any bones and we all made it out alive.
I was joined on this trip by a bunch of good friends I’ve blessed to have made during my time here in Okinawa. Many more adventures with whom I hope are in the pipeline. Since this trip I have made three more and found some incredible locations for imaging of all kinds but especially for locations that allow me to teach slow shutter techniques. This merged with astrophotography of the night skies allows the island to be crowned as the best location to teach slow shutter photography.
Contact me if you’d like further information on the three trips I’m planning for 2018 in the months of March, April and May. These will all be for slow shutter imaging and, fingers crossed, to take imagery of the Milky Way as it arcs across the skies of the island.

The Star-Shaped Sand Grains on the Beach of Iriomote Island, Japan
The star-shaped sand grains are found along the coast in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. This is one of the most unusual types of sand in the world. However called sand but actually they are different from ordinary sand lot, it is the bones of one species of protozoa in the ocean, over millions of years of fossil skeletons and mixed with sea sand. So it looks very much like the spiky star. The local people believe that the star sand from the wings of fairies fall. And until now, the story of the star sand has been brought out since. Those who come here have brought their own special sand.
Hoshizuna no Hama Beach Japanese remote Iriomote named the island found in Okinawa Prefecture. Iriomote Island is the largest of the Yaeyama Islands and the second largest in Okinawa Prefecture after Okinawa Island itself. The Iriomote Island in Okinawa is also referred to as the last unexplored area of Japan. It is complete with mountains, rain forests, waterfalls and there where the fresh water meets the sea water, covered with mangrove forests. The Hoshizuna no hama beach is very special. Translated it means star sand beach. [First Image credit Yuko Nieda]
These star-shaped grains of sand, collected from southern Japan, look like miniature works of art -- but they were not sculpted by an artist. They are the shells of microscopic organisms called foraminifera, which build intricate shells from the calcium carbonate they collect while drifting through the water. Their shells have settled on the seafloor for 500 million years, and are used by scientists to study the earth's changing climate. Learn more about the formation of sand and the animals that call it home in the Shores and Shallows exhibit at the Smithsonian's Sant Ocean Hall.
The beach is known as Hoshizuma, Star Sand Beach. The same phenomenon can be observed on the beaches of Kaijihama and Aiyaruhama , on the island of Taketomi which is also part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park . The world is full of amazing places, although the reason for that is an extraordinary place, is something tiny.
