Mangrove forests of Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf, IRAN. Video by BAHADOR HADIZADEH
The Mangrove forests of Qeshm or Hara forests of Qeshm are the mangrove forests on the southern coast of Iran, particularly on and near the island of Qeshm in the Persian Gulf. Dominated by the species Avicennia marina, known locally as the hara or harra tree, the forests represent an important ecological resource. The Hara Protected Area on Quesm and the nearby mainland is a biosphere reserve where commercial use is restricted to fishing (mainly shrimp), tourist boat trips, and limited mangrove cutting for animal feed.

The mangroves of Qeshm Island are uniquely adapted to their surroundings, which are characterized by searing heat, little rainfall, and high salinity. Dominated by a single species, Avicennia marina, the Qeshm mangroves experience some of the largest air and water temperature swings of any mangrove ecosystem in the world. The forest stretches around 7,500 hectors, and is filled with many narrow tidal channels. You can take ferry to visit different parts of this forest. In 1972 the Hara Protected Area (part of UNESCO's Hara Biosphere Reserve) was established to preserve suitable conditions for the growth and maintenance of the forest.

In this video, the local guide called Adel Shah is describing Haara or Mangrove trees. These trees can absorb 80% of salt of the sea water and separate the salt from the water and give back drinking water. on the leaves in his hand you can see the salt separated by the roots. This tree is 35 million years old in the coastal regions of Persian Gulf in Iran. Its fruit is very sweet although it grows in salty water. in high tide or high water you can see the roots coming out of the water.the older they get, the less hollow their trunk become. The best time to see them is when the sea is at the highest level because very easily you can go through all of canals of this unbelievable forest and reach different parts of the forest by boat.the only animal in this forest is a kind of Rat come from India by ships carried goods when ships went to India and back. Adel shah is a well-known local guide in Qeshm island.

The Iranian island of Qeshm, in the Persian Gulf, is home to one of the country’s most traditional societies. Young women are often married off at puberty, rarely venture out of their villages alone, and sometimes mask their faces. But things are beginning to change. More and more young women are being encouraged to study and dream of leading a different life from that of their mothers. Our correspondents report.
