Manhattan River Trail
On the first weekend of February we took advantage of some unusual warm weather and went for a hike that we've been wanting to do together for quite some time! The Manhattan River Trail is a five mile out and back (with loop options) that runs through the middle of the Little Apple, Manhattan, KS! There are many interesting sights along the way and a large variety of birds. In all it was one of our most fun hikes this year! Join in the adventure and see what we found on this adventure!

Manhattan River Trail
Paul Bunyan and JGIII go for a real quick ride on the river trail in Manhattan, KS. For those that don't know, this trail is a nice singletrack between the Manhattan Linear Trail and the River. I would consider this trail a beginner trail, with certain moderate difficulty terrain. The river trail is about 5-7 miles in length if you do the complete loop, Taking a beginner about an hour and a half, while some of the fastest riders in the area will complete it in 30 minutes. This video is 2 clips mashed together, not the whole trail. We would consider this part the most accessible of the river trail off of linear trail parking access just before the bridge on E Highway 24.

Manhattan River Trail - GoPro HD
Here's another short video of the Manhattan River Trail. I made a little adjustment to the camera angle from the last video I posted, and I think this one looks a little better. It's now also in HD.
The trailhead is located at a parking lot for the Linear Trail on 24 right before the Blue River Bridge. Overall the trail is pretty easy with no crazy drops or climbs. There are a few different options to take along the route which can make riding out and back in much different. It's just over 6 miles out and back..

Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan
Manhattan is in Kansas' Flint Hills region, which consists of continuous rolling hills covered in tall grasses. However, the downtown area – Manhattan's original site – was built on a broad, flat floodplain at the junction of the Kansas and Big Blue rivers. Manhattan is largest town in the Flint Hills, and is home to the Flint Hills Discovery Center.
Tuttle Creek Reservoir is 5 miles (8 km) north of Manhattan. The lake was formed when the Big Blue River was dammed for flood control in the 1960s, and it is now a state park that offers many recreational opportunities. South of the city is the Konza Prairie, a tallgrass prairie preserve owned by The Nature Conservancy and Kansas State University.

Crew Cuts: Top Of The World Trail, Manhattan, KS
The kids are growing up and their lives are getting busy. It seems like it has been a long time since we had the whole Crew together for an adventure. When we found ourselves with a rare weekend when all the kids were at home we took full advantage and hit a trail that we've talked about hiking for a long time! The Top Of The World Trail at Washington Marlatt Memorial Park in Manhattan, KS! With a name like Top Of The World you might expect a long and arduous climb, but remember this is in Kansas. That being said, the scenic overlook does offer an awesome view of Manhattan and the surrounding Flint Hills. We even managed to have one extra as Tori's friend Mariah joined us for her first hike ever!

AGam In Kansas - Update on Manhattan's NBAF Facility - July 21, 2016
(Sam Capoun) Hello and welcome to AGam in Kansas. I’m your guest host Sam Capoun and today we’re at the IGP institute at Kansas State University. I’m here with Dr. Vanier who is with NBAF so give us a little update about NBAF and tell us your job title. (Dr. Marty Vanier) Thanks, Sam. I am Director of Partnership Development for the NBAF Program Executive Office. (Sam) Tell us about NBAF’s mission statement. (Dr. Vanier) The mission of NBAF is to do advanced research at the bio-safety level three and four on high-consequence trans-boundary livestock diseases. The mission of the research is to provide advanced diagnostic tests to understand the disease process and to create vaccines that can be used to protect American agriculture against these diseases. (Sam) Right, are you explaining the three components that will come to NBAF then from New York? (Dr. Vanier) There are three different components that will be working in the NBAF facility. They are the same three components that currently work at the Plum Island facility. The first will be an advanced research program sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, which is the governmental agency that’s building the laboratory. The other two components are two parts of the US Department of Agriculture. The first is the Agricultural Research Service. They currently do a lot of research on trans-boundary diseases of livestock and they will transition their mission to NBAF. The other portion of USDA is USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service. They are responsible for doing a lot of the diagnostic testing for disease outbreaks and doing a lot of research and training of federal veterinarians and private veterinarians to recognize these trans-boundary diseases. The also will transition their program to NBAF. (Sam) What is the update on the building and when do you foresee it being done? (Dr. Vanier) The building is under construction. We’ve been doing construction for about a year. We anticipate that construction will be finished in December of 2020. (Sam) Okay, so why Manhattan Kansas then? (Dr. Vanier) Manhattan Kansas was the successful proposer of this facility. There were a variety of locations in the country that proposed building the facility in their locations. The government looked at a variety of attributes, the community, the research support in the community, the ability to find a workforce able to come into the laboratory and work, connections with the industry, connections with a research university. When all of those proposals came in and were evaluated then Manhattan was selected as the winning proposal. (Sam) Well, you mentioned right there the connection with a research facility. How is it going to benefit that K-State’s right here with NBAF being very close to it? (Dr. Vanier) It will benefit both entities. Clearly, NBAF will have the ability to reach out and touch researchers at Kansas State University and collaborate with them. Conversely, because of that collaboration, our researchers at Kansas State can advance their research projects and also it gives them a great opportunity to train their graduate students in a facility like NBAF that wouldn’t be available anywhere else in the country. (Sam) I know some people may be a little nervous or skeptical about these diseases coming to Manhattan Kansas where there’s a big AG community. What precautions or measures are you guys taking to make sure it’s safe and that it’s all going to be all right? (Dr. Vanier) Well, the first thing to understand is this is going to be a completely state-of-the-art laboratory that will be constructed in Manhattan. There will be a variety of levels of safety and security features not only as part of the building construction but also with respect to building operations, understanding who is working in the building, where in the building they can go, what laboratories they can access. All of the research materials are kept in highly secure locations in rooms, in freezers, which are only accessed by folks who are approved to work with those particular agents. We have a number of security features that will be a part of this laboratory that will be state of the art, second to none in this country. (Sam) Thank you for sharing that update with us and thank you for joining us today, Dr. Vanier. (Dr. Vanier) Thank you, Sam.
Dirt biking at the Spillway Cycle Area Manhattan KS 2017 09 17 2
The Spillway Cycle Area Manhattan KS part of the Tuttle Creek Lake Recreation Area (sometimes called Tuttle Creek ATV Area)
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers welcomes you to Tuttle Creek Lake and the Spillway Cycle Area. This park is open from 9 am to sunset year round. The cycle area comprises 40 acres of open and wooded terrain adjacent to the spillway. Several miles of trails, ranging from the novice level to challenging hill climbs, await the off-road enthusiast. A vault toilet, loading ramp, and picnic tables are available at the entrance parking/staging area. Avoid the area if it is wet, not only does the park disapprove the mud is like clay and fills up tires. Otherwise, when it is dry, go and enjoy a small, but fun place to ride around. You can ride on crisscrossing trails that seem new every ride down them with enough paths to keep it interesting.
Alcohol and firearms are prohibited in the park. DoT-approved helmets are required for all cyclists and ATV riders.

Today 9.17.17 The K-State Baja engineering team was out there riding around. They have three little single man baja vehicles running the trails. Note to any alumni: If you have an old 4x4 ATV, the team needs one to help them move their vehicles around and save the freshman from the mud! A University of Central Missouri Faculty member helped save them this time. :)
