Pearl Island, also known as Katican Island, is located in Guiuan Eastern Samar. It's a 3-hour drive from Tacloban and 30 minutes boat ride from the mainland. It's a marine sanctuary protected by BFAR so visitors should secure a permit first at BFAR Guiuan. No need to pay for the permit (as of October 2018).
This island was heavily affected by Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 so you can see the broken structures and how it looks like a 'warzone' ????. But it was nice swimming in the beach because it was clean!

MANICANI was famous in 1945-46 when (recorded) 6,000 US Navy Seabees were stationed there (1st Battalion, 91st Seabees being one of them) fixing ships.
We walked the entire island with a 12-foot Cross preaching in every barrio and handing out face to face about 700 pieces of Christian literature in partnership with about 5-6 Christian ladies (two pastors) that we met shortly after beginning our walk.
This WALK while PREACHING is part of our 800kms (400+ mile) walk with the Cross around the ENTIRE ISLAND of SAMAR from May 4th until July 1st, 2009 passing out as many as 60,000 pieces of literature before we end.

DENR angers thousands of MANICANI townfolks after thratening to stop livelihood
Chances are, you may have seen organized protests staged by so-called anti-mining residents of Manicani. But the truth is, assuming they really are from the island, their voice doesn't speak of the residents' true sentiments. 87 percent of Manicanians are favoring the removal of decades old nickel ore stockpile in their area, which benefits from the still non-mining operations.
