Wonderful Colorado
On our trip to Cripple Creek and Manitou Springs, Colorado, we first stopped at Las Animas in Colorado and found an amazing courthouse.
The Bent County Courthouse, located on Courthouse Square in the county seat of Las Animas, opened in 1889 to serve as the county’s administrative and legal center. The county jail opened next to the courthouse in 1912 and was used for nearly a century to house sheriffs and process inmates. The jail closed in 2000, when the county built a new justice center, but the courthouse is now the oldest functioning courthouse in Colorado.
In 1912 Bent County added a jail next to the courthouse. A two-story brick building in the Classical Revival style, the jail included living quarters for the county sheriff on the first floor and jail cells on the second floor. The basement of the building was used to process inmates.
The jail was home to many sheriffs and families during the twentieth century. Its most famous residents were probably the family members of Sheriff Dan Gates, who was elected in 1927. Gates’s wife often cooked for the jail’s inmates and gained a reputation for her good meals. Gates’s son started the Las Animas Santa Fe Trail Parade in 1934. Under the name Ken Curtis, he later became a country-western singer and actor best known for playing Festus on the television series Gunsmoke.
Next Stop ,Welcome to Cripple Creek, a historic gambling and mining town that’s one of the most dynamic and scenic tourism destinations in Colorado. The grandly restored Old West brick buildings along Bennett Avenue, surrounded by majestic mountains, boast nine unique state-of-the-art casinos, as well as great restaurants, shops, and hotels. A beautiful area nestled on the western edge of Pikes Peak. We recommend driving the road from Manitou Springs during daylight hours if you haven't made this trip before. All in all a fun and interesting place to visit.
The next day we went to Colorado Springs to hike up and see Helen Hunt Falls. Well, the climb was covered in snow and ice and what could have taken about 30 minutes took us about an hour. When we reached the top at the falls we discovered the falls were frozen, making ice climbing the sport of the day. The scenery is breathtaking and the trail is great in the warmer months.
Now we go to Manitou Springs. Discover the historic charm of Manitou Springs. Nestled between Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs is centrally located & close to all major attractions in the Pikes Peak Region. They offer a variety of lodging - including cabins, bed & breakfasts, hotels/motels, & RV Parks/campgrounds. Taste the naturally carbonated mineral water that made Manitou famous as you stroll the historic downtown district. Meet the artists as you discover the many art galleries. They are proudly a Colorado Creative District. Find the perfect gift or souvenir in the boutique shops throughout town. Rest & rejuvenate as you relax and dine in one of the many delicious cafes & restaurants. Here they have hiking trails for families that meander along Fountain Creek as well as the extreme verticle challenge of Barr Trail reaching the 14,115 foot summit of Pikes Peak.
