King Salmon Kayak Tournament, Manitowoc Wisconsin

GLKFS Manitowoc Salmon Results: The sun was out but so was the wind. We had a total of 18 participants with a total of 4 fish caught, two King Salmon, a Brown Trout and a Steelhead. The 2 Salmon were too close to measure by Tournament Directors so it was agreed on to have the State Wildlife Official on hand do the final measurement. They were less than a 1/4 difference!

Manitowoc and Two Rivers – From Ship to Shore
In this episode of Discover Wisconsin, Mariah and Eric explore the wonders of Manitowoc and Two Rivers from sunken ship to stunning shore. Eric begins by learning about the history and industry of the rivers that flow through Manitowoc and Two Rivers. After exploring the Rogers Street Fishing Village in Two Rivers, he heads to Burger Boat Company to see what the historic company is up to today. He also meets up with some kayakers to do some paddling on the Manitowoc River.
Both the Manitowoc River and the East and West Twin Rivers eventually flow into Lake Michigan, which offers beauty and exploration above and below the surface. At the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Mariah talks with a marine archaeologist about the shipwrecks in the area, and the different ways visitors can learn about, and access the wrecks. She also joins a group of standup paddle boarders at the Manitowoc Marina and takes in an amazing view of the city from the water.
Back on land, Eric explores the Historic Washington House in Two Rivers, and learns how to make the perfect ice cream sundae in the city where it was invented. We also get to know local producers at Pine River Dairy, who have been manufacturing butter in the area for more than 75 years. Eric then heads to Manitowoc’s Pinecrest Historical Village for their annual Pinecrest Plates event, which brings in local farmers and fantastic food for people to enjoy.
And you can’t visit Manitowoc and Two Rivers without spending time on the coast. Mariah flies a kite on the pristine Neshotah Beach in Two Rivers, wanders the beautiful grounds of West of the Lake Gardens, and goes bird watching at Woodland Dunes Nature Preserve. There is so much beauty to be experienced in Manitowoc and Two Rivers and countless ways to do it – from ship to shore!

A Walk Around Manitowoc - My Hometown
I can remember my mom taking me downtown on a Friday night or a weekend night back in the late 50's-early 60's, and the downtown was like Bedford Falls from It's A Wonderful Life or Santa Rosa from Hitchcock's Shadow Of A Doubt. A bustling downtown, with buses packed and crowded streets filled with townies burning holes in their pockets with Friday paychecks. At Christmas time the streets would all be lit up and decked out. It seemed like everyone went to church on Sundays or be considered an outcast. The top amount of tax dollars went into education, and I think it probably still does from the look of the schools. The Lake Michigan Car-ferry still comes in twice a day. When I lived there, several car ferries came in each day. Now its more of a tourist boat than an actual working train-car ferry shortening the trip around Lake Michigan. Ships are still made there but mostly Luxury yachts from Burger Boats. Now... the ship yards are making huge sky wind mills. The Aluminum company left town (they shall go nameless) in search of cheaper labor in Mexico. Large Cranes and hotel refrigerators are still made there, and I will come upon in my travels all over the world that reminds me of where I came and who I am. The Manitowoc I grew up with is slowly disappearing and being replaced by a new Manitowoc, mostly out by the freeway. I am almost positive old downtown Manitowoc will one day see another heyday. But as for now, commerce is out on the fringe of the city limits.
This film is about capturing that old Manitowoc before it's gone and something new takes its place. And it will, and its all good.
Manitowoc was a great place to grow up in.

A Walk Around Lincoln Park, Manitowoc, Wisconsin
This is a nostalgic little film (thus the sentimental soundtrack) about a wonderful wooded park and zoo on the north side of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, called Lincoln Park. I have a many great childhood memories of the park, with my mom taking me to the zoo, pre-kindergarten, but most of the memories are from Junior High and High School. We used to hang as a large group on the bridges between the tennis courts every night during summers. Mostly because several in the group needed to smoke and not be seen. Later years, as underage teenagers, we would drink our beer and cheap wine in the woods. Thinking the cops were too lazy to get out of the car to look for nefarious teenagers. I think we were right, I never saw a cop go into the woods. So, this is another sentimental look into my youth during a hometown sojourn.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Manitowoc (#711)
[Latest Airdate: July 5, 2018]
[Original Airdate: March 8, 2018]
Manitowoc is a city on the eastern shore of Wisconsin, north of Sheboygan and south of Green Bay that John McGivern LOVES! No, we mean it.
Visits to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and exploration of the SS Badger were the beginning of his enchantment. Then he was introduced to beach glass, reminisced with an Evergleam Christmas tree collector, and explored Jagemann Stamping and Briess Malt and Ingredients Co. He had a Diet Coke with Kathie at the Stage Door Pub, made a belt at Leatherwerks and checked in to Dead by Dawn --- not sure that he would ever check out! But the cherry on the top was provided by Beerntsen's Confectionary and Cedar Crest Ice Cream! Yum! What's not to love?
Fair warning to those in Manitowoc: Don't be surprised if some day there's a Manitowoc mailbox with John's name on it. By being so inviting, you asked for it, Manitowoc!
