Manjarabad Fort
Manjarabad Fort is a little known fort which lies within 6 km from the beautiful township of Sakleshpur. This fort lies on the very busy Bangalore -- Mangalore National Highway 48 at a place called Donigal which is a famous pit-stop amongst the trekkers and lorry drivers. Still, a minute fraction of these people and a very less number localities know about this magnificent hillock. The fort is built on a small hillock right adjacent to the NH 48, in other words it is directly overlooking the highway. Still, it is not visible from any point on the highway which is why it is so less known about. The muddy path which originates from the highway leads to a flight of around 270 normal sized steps which takes us to the entrance of the fort. It hardly takes 8 -- 10 min for an average person to climb the steps and reach the entrance from the highway.
The fort is said to have been built by Tippu Sultan in the late 1700′s. This fort is primarily built as a strategic defense location as it commands the approach to the plateau beyond it. It is built in the shape of a 8 pointed star as a lookout to all the 8 directions.
It served as a lookout for enemies attacking from both the coastal side as well as the Mysore side.It is built in such a way that the walls of the fort spans the entire hill and the only way to enter is through the main archway. The fort is filled with numerous tunnels and the rumor is that Tippu Sultan had built a secret tunnel from here to Srirangapattana.
The Mohammedan architecture is complete with beautiful archways and minarets. The fort was built mainly as a watchtower and an ammunition dump.
Enough said about the architecture, the breathtaking views of the majestic western ghats is what makes the trip tothis fort worth it. It also gives a serene view of the plateau towards Bangalore. The inside of the fort gives a pleasant soothing feel and is laden with grass if visited in the monsoon season. It makes us forget that we are inside a fort. Walking around this small plain inside the fort on the natural lawn with the soothing breeze and drizzle is one of the most scintillating experiences one can have.
A wide well is present right in the middle of the fort with steps on all four sides which most probably was for fresh water. The possibility of encountering mist (manju in Kannada) even at afternoon 2:00 is high and this probably is the reason for the name of the fort being so !!It takes less than an hour's time to roam around this magnificent structure which is in a very apathetic state due to the less fame it has got. It is sad that most of the young people of this locality are also unaware of this place. It is a must visit place as it serves as a nice break from all the temple-tour one usually sees in the neighborhood. It is high time the concerned authorities fix up this fabulous viewpoint and make it more visible.
It is on a hillock beside NH48 at a distance of 7 km from Sakaleshpur towards Mangalore. There is a village by name Donigal where trucks stop for a cup of hot coffee. The path adjacent to these shops, rather canteens, leads to Manjarabad fort. The fort was constructed by Tippu Sultan, then king of Mysore. Started in 1785, it took 7 years to complete.
Primarily, the star-shaped fort was constructed as part of defense strategy to see British Army from Mangalore. Also, it was used to store ammonia, horses, and a secret tunnel to Srirangapatna, capital of Tippu Sultan. However the tunnel is closed now. There were lot of chambers and we were told they were used to house horses, used as kitchens, bathrooms apart from storing war weapons. In the middle of the fort, there is a well/pond with 'plus' shaped stairs leading to it, which was the source of water back then. It was drizzling when we went and we drenched. However we didn't quite feel it since our minds were filled by the spectacular view of western ghats the fort was providing.
Sakaleshpura a hill station town and headquarter of Sakleshpura Taluk in Hassan district in the South Indian state of Karnataka. The town lies in the Malnad region on the magnificent hills of the Biodiversity hotspot, the Western Ghats. It has a temperate climate surrounded with lofty green hills full of Coffee, Cardamom, Pepper and Areca Plantations . These crops which contribute mainly to the economy of the Taluk are grown in the surrounding villages and entire taluk are brought to Sakleshpura city for sale. The town lies on National Highway 48 (NH-48) which connects port city of Mangalore with capital city Bangalore of Karnataka state. The nearest airport is Mangalore International Airport.
Manjarabad Fort, Sakleshpur -karnataka
Manjarabad Fort was constructed by Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore as a strategic defensive location. The fort served this use because it commands the approach to the plateau beyond Sakleshpur from the coast. Situated on a hillock, the fort is on one level, unlike other forts, which are multi-level.
Only source of water in the fort are cross-shaped pits with steps leading into them. The fort is located just outside Sakleshpur on National Highway (NH) 48. Work on the fort commenced in 1785, and ended in 1792. The star shaped fort was also used to store the ammunitions, during the reign of Tipu Sultan. Its strategic location enables soldiers in the fort to see the British army coming from Mangalore.
From the fort, tourists can get an aerial view of the Western Ghats. Out of the many chambers in the fort, some were used to house the horses. Certain chambers served the soldiers as kitchen and bathroom. The fort has Islamic style of architecture and arched entrance-ways. The forts sits at an elevation of 3,240 ft above sea level.
