Mankon Museum in Bamenda, Cameroon
The Mankon Museum is an art and cultural museum located in Mankon-Bamenda, Cameroon.
The museum was inaugurated in 2006, and is situated at the entrance to the Mankon Palace.
Many of the historical objects in the collection came directly from the palace. These include some items that traditionally were not supposed to be seen by the general public, a situation that upset some members of the local community.
At Mankon Museum, discover the history of the ancient Mankon kingdom. Exhibits provide detail about the prosperous kingdom that was once situated on the high plateau in the western part of the country. The museum features both permanent and temporary exhibition. Permanent displays showcase about 180 artifacts divided into six sections that offer insight into the life and culture of the past through old clothes, weapons, furniture, musical instruments, women's accessories, and works of art, such as traditional masks and statues.

Powerful Arts of Cameroon: The Amadou Njoya Collection
Powerful Arts of Cameroon: The Collection of Amadou Njoya features works from the culturally rich and topographically diverse area located in central West Africa. With a population of over 20 million people and with approximately 250 linguistic groups, Cameroon mirrors the diversity of our very own Queens community.
Amadou Njoya was born into a family of distinguished iron and brass artisans who worked for the royal family of the Bamum kingdom. Amadou Njoya – a fourth generation Cameroonian – his family had bestowed upon them the title of Nji, – a significant and honorable person within the kingdom.
In 1990, Amadou began collecting art and has assembled a comprehensive assortment of both traditional and contemporary objects that represent his appreciation of ceremonial ritual and respect for the spirit's that inhabit the work. As a whole, his collection emulates the power, beauty and spirituality that is inherent in the masterful objects that are made of wood, metal and terra cotta and cover the various cultures throughout all areas of Cameroon. A large portion of the objects in the exhibition originate from the Grassfields kingdoms of Cameroon, and were worn and used in performances by notable figures within the society during ceremonies and rituals and evoke the power of their spirits.

THE BEAUTIFUL BAFUT PALACE ~ WORLD HERITAGE MUSEUM - SOUTHERN CAMEROON /AMBAZONIA
Surrounded by a sacred forest in the heart of northwest Cameroon, the Bafut Palace has been the fulcrum of political power for over 400 years. It embodies Bafut cultural identity and remains a center for religious rites and traditional ceremonies. Over 50 houses are clustered around the site’s spiritual core, Achum Shrine, and are used by the Fon (king), his wives, and the royal court. This shrine, built of wood and bamboo and covered with thatch, houses a valued devotional object, typically referred to as a fetish, and is an impressive example of traditional religious architecture.

C2C17 Trip to Mankon Palace
Ok, so this was not the best experience I have had. 1st off, after we had paid and traveled all the way to the palace, then and only then is when they told us that any woman on her period could not enter into the palace. I was not only shocked but highly disappointed. But, I knew better than to lie and go in anyway because, trust me, voodoo/juju is real especially in African cultures. In fact, my mother told me of a woman who had the same experience and went into the palace anyway, and had her period straight for several months afterwards before she was delivered!
On top of that, the chief of the palace made everyone wait almost 2 hrs for his presence. When he finally did arrive, they were told that no one could speak directly to the chief himself. Anyone who wanted to ask him something was to ask his right hand man, who would then whisper the same question into the chief's ear. Only then would the chief respond.
In the end, they were not great host, and I ended up seeing the chiefs right hand man in the bar next to where me and my period buddies were eating.
Though the Mankon Palace visit was not such a great experience, it was a good learning experience. Most importantly, it was a great bonding experience with our new MESTA sisters and brothers.
However, if you would like to visit Mankon Palace definitely do and share your experience below! Just make sure (ladies) you don't goon your cycle! ;D
