Pilanesberg National Park - North West Parks South Africa
#visitnorthwestparks Pilanesberg National Park is in the Bojanala Region of the North West Province. The creation of the Reserve is considered one of the most ambitious programmes of its kind to be undertaken anywhere in the world.
Thanks to Operation Genesis in 1979, which involved the game-fencing of the reserve and the re-introduction of many long-vanished species, the park now has in excess of 7 000 animals including 24 of the larger species.
The crater of a long extinct volcano is the setting of Pilanesberg National Park – a fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic eruptions some 1300 million years ago. Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature.
The area is fringed by three concentric ridges or rings of hills – the formation rises from the surrounding plains like a bubble. The structure of the park is termed the “Pilanesberg National Park Alkaline Ring Complex”.
Ancient, even by geological time scales, this extinct volcano is the most perfect example of an alkaline ring complex. A number of rare (but not necessarily economically important) minerals occur in the park. Pilanesberg National Park rates high amongst the world’s outstanding geological phenomena.
Pilanesberg has survived ages of erosion and stands high above the surrounding bushveld plains. The early presence of man can be seen in the numerous Stone and Iron Age sites that are scattered throughout the park.
The park exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as “Bushveld”. Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone.
Springbok, brown hyena, the red eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees usually found in arid areas are found cohabitation with moist-area-limited impala, black eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees.
The colourful hues, varied habitats and panoramas will delight and entertain photographers and visitors.

Year X - Ultimate X
After nine years of providing Africa with its premier action sports event, the pressure was on for the tenth edition of Ultimate X. With a move from its original home, Cape Town, to the bush and hills of the Pilanesberg, no one knew what to expect on arrival at the event. Sun International wanted the event at Sun City and it turned out to be an exceptionally good idea.
From arrival on the Thursday, both athletes, media and sponsors were treated to exceptional hospitality and glorious African Cuisine. The early arrivals got to head into the Pilanesberg National Park with Mankwe Game Trackers and experience the bushveld and the big five first hand. Afterwards they were treated to a traditional “Braai” with gourmet boerewors rolls. After that many chose to enjoy the Sun City nightlife and Casino.
Friday saw the balance of the athletes arriving from the Night Harvest event the previous evening in Cape Town. Many of the sponsors and media joined Monster Hydro, TaylorMade and Skullcandy on the world famous Lost City Golf Course, while others either enjoyed all the action attractions at the resort, hit a practice session at the incredible contest park or simply lazed poolside. The evening saw the first of two action packed Monster Energy, Flight Night FMX shows under lights, with both the athletes and the Monster Energy Girls keeping the crowd entertained until the closing fireworks display. Local FMX riders, Dallan Goldman, Scotty Billet and Alastair Sayers pulled some huge tricks, as they were joined by Nitro Circus star, Brayden Davies from Australia. The evening ended off with a traditional “Shebeen” evening put on by North West Tourism. The international guys were blown away by the food, hospitality and traditional dance troop, who even pulled up BMX stars, Kenneth Tencio and Tristan Aarts to join them on the dance floor. An incredible first day at Ultimate X.
Day two dawned with a palpable sense of expectation, as the crowds started arriving early for the SKATE and BMX qualifying and finals. In the Element skateboard qualifications, the local guys were lifting their game in answer to the small batch of international riders competing. It was very hard for the judges to decide on the finalists and no one could claim to pick a leader amongst them. Moving into the finals there was a massive battle between defending champion, Brandon Valjalo and the two international skaters, Tomas Vintr (Czech Republic) and Zander Gabriel (USA), with young Cape Town star, Allan Adams hot on their tails. It was also great to see skate stalwarts Alan Marola and Puddy Zwennis battling through to the finals, along with Yann Horowitz and Byron Rhoda. In the end, it was consistent and clean riding with some technical mastery, that saw Zander narrowly edging out Brandon for the win.

Two Days in Pilanesberg
Melissa and I booked our first every safari with South Africa Adventures in November 2017. Roger picked us up from our apartment in Joburg and drove us to and around Pilanesberg for our first game drive. He provided coffee and snacks at one of the hides while constantly educating us on the various birds and animals we were seeing. We stopped for lunch at the restaurant in the park and then continued on our search for more wildlife. Around 3 we had a quick stop at our accommodations to drop off our bags and then we headed out with Solomzi (the Buffalo Solider of Pilanesberg).
Solomzi took us on our second game drive on Friday afternoon and then again on our 3rd drive, early Saturday morning. Solomzi was a great guide! he worked with the other guides on the radio to find our first view of lions and a leopard. During our morning drive on Saturday we stopped for coffee and had a chance to chat with him and found out that he loves elephants. We spend a good while talking about elephants and he told us tons of interesting facts while also sharing some stories from his years of experience as a guide. To end our 3rd drive, Solomzi took us back to camp so that we could gather our bags and check out. (This is where the video ends).
After getting our bags together, we grabbed breakfast at the lodge and took a walk around the grounds. By 11 or so, we met up with Darren for our 4th and last game drive of our trip. With Darren driving us around saw even more animals as we hopped from one watering hole to the next. After lunch at the park, we drove around the park for a while longer and by 3 in the afternoon, Darren then drove us back to Joburg.
Overall we had a great time and can't wait for our next safari. At this point we've seen 4 of the big 5 with the African Buffalo being the only one of the big five to allude us.
