MTB Manly Dam on Sydneys Northern Beaches
Right in the middle of Sydney, well almost, lies a fantastic 10km cross country MTB trail called Manly Dam. There is a good mix of features throughout so any complacency or disrespect for the trail will likely lead to an inevitable off and more than likely, a good injury. One of my more memorable trips over the bars led to a fractured elbow socket but thankfully, not in this instance.

Manly Dam Mountain Bike Trail | Part #1
Mountain Biking at one of Sydney's most popular mtb trails - the famous mountain bike circuit around Manly Dam Reserve. We started the ride at King Street, Manly Vale (next to Manly Hydraulics Laboratory) going up north.
According to Flow Mountain Bike website Manly Dam is the most used trail not just in Sydney, but Australia, with approximately 150,000 uses a year, and up to 500 passes in one day. It’s rough, it’s bumpy, muddy and scratchy out there, it’s a fast ride, with loads of fun, swooping turns and drop offs everywhere.

Manly Dam was built in 1892 to provide a supply of fresh water to parts of the Northern Beaches area. However, after its capacity became insufficient for the region’s population, the dam and its surrounding wilderness was made a public reserve. Today, Manly Dam’s serene environment makes it the perfect spot for barbeques, family gatherings, swimming, kayaking, bush walks and BMXing, and it’s only a 30 minute drive from Sydney’s CBD.

Due to the raging bush fires in NSW the National Parks were closed this weekend as we resorted to the Manly Dam XC trails for a ride.

European Carp (Cyprinus carpio) at Manly Dam
The scourge of Australias inland waters, the European or Common Carp is actually a native to Asia but has been introduced throughout the world. First brought into Australia in 1872, it wasn't until the 1960's and early 1970's that carp numbers exploded and greatly increased their distribution in the Murray-Darling System.
They are well known for increasing the turbidity in waters they inhabit. In the video you can see them sucking up sand and detritus from the bottom and then spitting it out.
They are one of several feral species that have been introduced to Manly Dam and are actively pursued by some fisherman

Technical and challenging - but easy to get off and walk the sections that are beyond your abilities - this ride will show you how you are improving, but take care its not for first time beginners, there are some sections that can be a danger to Novice riders.
About 1-1.5 hours (or faster, check Hot Laps), 10.3km circuit. Other options are the Bantry Bay ride, 1.5-2 hours, 16k circuit.
