Mannum, South Australia
I recently spent a day in Mannum, a picturesque country town nestled along the banks of the River Murray in South Australia. This three minute video uses photographs, video footage and sound to 'paint a picture' of this delightful town, which is less than 90 minutes from the centre of Adelaide.
In the video can be seen two ferries used to transport vehicles and pedestrians across the Murray 24-hours a day, seven days a week throughout the year. House boats are available for hire in Mannum and other towns along the river, and are very popular with city dwellers and visitors to the region. The area is a bird watchers delight with all manner of native birds calling the river or its environs home.
Most of the bird sounds on the video belong to the native, Major Mitchell Cockatoo, large white birds that nest along the river in their thousands. Also seen in the video are several pelicans, and the numerous seagulls which, despite being many miles from the ocean, seem to have also made the area home.
Old Mannum - river
Mannum was founded along the River Murray over 150 years ago. Many of these photos are of paddle-steamers, the main source of transport in those days and still a local tourist attraction.
Paddle-steamer Cruises - PS Marion (overnight cruise)
Originally built in 1900 and lovingly restored since by the local community, the PS Marion paddle-steamer is usually moored at the museum - see the separate clip 'Museums - Mannum Dock Museum'. But several times a year it cruises along the river for two or more days and offers one-hour cruises at other times (see separate clip). Schedules are available on the website.

Old Mannum - flood of 1956
A tree in Mary Ann Reserve (see separate clip) and lines along the walls of the Visitor Information Centre and Pretoria Hotel indicate the height of the devastating flood of 1956. These photos were provided with the courtesy of the Underwood Family of Mannum.

Brick-a-laide 2015 - New Mannum - First look
Brick-a-laide, the newest mega LEGO fan event, was held today, in the Adelaide Convention Centre. The sold out event, saw many people coming to view the creations of local, interstate and international guests. It has been so successful, they are planning the event for next year. If you are a fan of LEGO or fancy a trip down memory lane, be sure to book your tickets early next year! -
I had to come back and look at this one twice. There's something about it that had me thinking ...Yeah, I recognize that, or that really sums up a South Australian country town (seeing the CFS fire truck made me feel proud. Good on the Country Fire Service volunteers!) This exhibit is beautiful in its simplicity, and wonderful with its nostalgia. Look out for the Hulk, taking his 'hulk-sized' Laxettes home from the chemist! LOL!
The legend of the Mannum Natives
Up at my compound there is an urban myth that indigenous native people still inhabit the land. Proof of their survival on the land is yet to be established
Record low (Mannum Community College)
A documentary that uses satire to focus on the poor state of the River Murray in the town of Mannum South Australia. It looks at current water levels, impacts on town and community, and examines why the river is being depleted. The film gives the people of Mannum a voice on issues they are being faced with and debunks some myths associated to where the river water is going.
