Places to see in ( Sarlat - France ) Manoir de Gisson
The Manoir de Gisson is a beautiful building in the centre of the historic centre of Sarlat in the Dordogne. It is located at the edge of the Place de la Liberty, opposite the large covered market. Sarlat is full of fabulous medieval buildings and amongst the best of them is the Manoir de Gisson. It is a listed building and has recently been opened to the public.
Its entrance is on the Place du Marché aux Oies, goose market square, once an important trading area for geese and a charming statue of three geese now has pride of place in the centre of the square.
The manor house is two different constructions linked by a 13th century hexagonal tower which contains a stone staircase. Whilst outside take a look at the roof which is made of stone (lauze) and is incredibly heavy. Once very common these lauze roofs are becoming quite rare due to the sheer weight of the tiles. Also noteworthy are the mullioned windows, the pretty colonnaded window, the first floor balcony with a wrought iron railing and the decorated door frames.
Inside you first of all enter the vaulted basement which is home to a collection of curiosities. These collections were very fashionable with the wealthy at the end of the Renaissance and the notables of the day were keen collectors of any curiosities brought back from travels by the adventurers of the time.
Interestingly even though huge numbers of new plants, animals, cultural artefacts etc were being discovered some less reputable voyagers still felt a need to fabricate marvels and a narwhal horn was passed off as a unicorn horn whilst there is something that looks like a hare with a squirrels tail and anchors stuck on!
The collection includes a number of shrunken human heads along with a recipe for making them. These collections of curiosities are common in mansions of castles of the day and you can see a similar collection at the Chateau de Fenelon nearby.

Places to see in ( Sarlat - France )
Sarlat-la-Canéda is a medieval town in southwest France's Dordogne department. Its central Sainte-Marie Church, redesigned by architect Jean Nouvel, hosts an indoor food market, and a glass elevator in the bell tower offers city views. Sarlat Market sells local delicacies like foie gras and cheese. To the south, close to the Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos de Sarlat, stands the bullet-shaped Lanterne des Morts tower.
Sarlat - Now we're talking! The most famous town in the region and one of the most renowned and visited in France. It is also one of the most attractive. Often called just Sarlat, the town is actually twinned with its less famous neighbour and is more correctly called Sarlat le Caneda.
Sarlat is in the region called the Perigord Noir in the Sout West of France. Destined to be besieged by tourists at almost all times of the year Sarlat is a beautiful, well restored town a few kilometres north of the River Dordogne. The old town, dating from both medieval and renaissance times is a pleasure to visit, especially during the spring and autumn, or early in the morning. If you can catch the early morning sunshine on the yellow sandstone buildings, so much the better.
The cathedral was originally the church of Sarlat Abbey. Over the centuries it has been added to and transformed and is now a mix of Roman, Gothic and other styles. The cour du cloitre and the nearby cour des fontaines and the cour des chanoines were all originally part of the abbey. The jardin des Enfeus just above the cathedral is the ancient abbey cemetary and there are several sarcophagus and 'enfeus'(enfeus are tombs that are built into the church wall).
Opposite the cathedral on the Place du Peyrou is the splendid 'Hôtel de La Boétie', birthplace of the philosopher and humanist Etienne de La Boétie. His house has a large arched entrance and Renaissance style mullioned windows.
Crossing the Rue de la Republique to the west side of town take a look at the Hotel St Clar with its wonderful turret tower and see the Tour du Bourreau and the last remaining part of the ramparts. Wander northwards past the convent of Ste Claire and the Chapel of the Penitents Blancs with its huge Baroque doorway.
Crossing back over the Rue de la Republique walk down the Rue des Consuls. This road is one of the highlights of Sarlat and contains a number of very impressive mansions. There is the 16th century Hotel de Mirandol with its imposing doorway, the 14th century Hotel Plamon with its three arched windows. The floor above with its mullion windows was added a century later. The Hotel de Vassal was built in the 15th century and has a double turret and the Hotel Tapinois de Betou has a monumental staircase. Wandering along the street taking in all the different details of windows and doors and roofs is a pleasure.

Sarlat-la-Canéda, France in 4K (UHD)
#Sarlat-la-Canéda - an old town of art and history, located in #Aquitaine, in the south-west of #France, the capital of the historical region of Black Perigord.
Historically, this place was inhabited even at the Carolingian. Sarlat became a prosperous city at the end of the VIII century, during the reign of Pepin the Short and Charlemagne, when the Benedictine monks founded their monastery here. The heyday of the city came in the 14th century, when its name constantly appeared in the chronicles of the Hundred Years War.
Later, Sarlat-la-Canéda lost his privileges, finally became impoverished, falling into lethargy, but nevertheless, he could survive so what was between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
The entire second half of the 20th century, Sarlat-la-Canéda was so carefully restored that today it is considered one of the most attractive for tourists in the entire province. Today in the city you can admire old houses, such as they were many years ago, with their stone roofs and lively streets awakened from a lethargic dream.
Recorded in July 2015 and in July 2019.
