Japanese Buddhist Temple | 長谷観音
Hello kittens! ♡
I've been wanting to experience Japanese shrines and temples ever since my first visit in 2013. Luckily this time, and thanks to one of our kind friends in Japan, we got the chance to visit Kamakura and the Hase-dera Buddhist temple.
It was an absolutely amazing experience; if you're ever in Japan I would highly recommend visiting a shrine or temple if you can!

Hase-dera (長谷寺?) (known more formally as Kaikōzan Jishōin Hase-dera (海光山慈照院長谷寺?)) is one of the great Buddhist temples in the city of Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, famous for housing a massive wooden statue of Kannon. The temple is the fourth of the 33 stations of the Bandō Sanjūsankasho pilgrimage circuit dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten.
The temple originally belonged to the Tendai sect of Buddhism, but eventually became an independent temple of the Jōdo shū sect.[1]
Statue
The statue is one of the largest wooden statues in Japan, with a height of 9.18 metres (30.1 ft), and is made from camphor wood and gilded in gold. It has 11 heads, each of which represents a different phase in the search for enlightenment.
According to legend, the statue is one of two images of Kannon carved by a monk named Tokudō in 721.[1] The camphor tree was so large, according to legend, that he decided that he could carve two statues with it. One was enshrined in Hase-dera in the city of Nara, Yamato Province, while the other was set adrift in the sea to find the place that it had a karmic connection with. It washed ashore on Nagai Beach on the Miura Peninsula near Kamakura in the year 736. The statue was immediately brought to Kamakura where a temple was built to honor it.
Surrounding area
The temple also commands an impressive view over Kamakura's bay and is famous for its hydrangeas, which bloom along the Hydrangea Path in June and July. The temple is built on two levels and also includes an underground cave. The cave, called benten kutsu cave, contains a long winding tunnel with a low ceiling and various statues and devotionals to Benzaiten, the sea goddess and the only female of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology.
The grounds of the temple are home to hundreds of small Jizō statues, placed by parents mourning offspring lost to miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion. These statues remain in place for about a year, before being removed to make way for more statues; it is estimated that some 50,000 Jizō statues have been placed at Hase-dera since WWII.[2]
Kaikozan Hase-dera is also part of the Kamakura pilgrimage circuit, also consisting of 33 sites,[3] and is station 4 of the 33 temples of the Kantō Pilgrimage.

Kaikoji Temple Founded by Saint Donsho Ninritsu!
Saint Donsho Ninritsu constructed Kaikoji Temple, which is one of the subtemples of Sennyuji Temple, on the West side of Kyoto Station in 1228 after he came back to Japan from China (called Song in those days). After that, the temple was relocated a number of times. It has been in the present place since 1645.
Shaka Nyorai (Sakyamuni) as the principal image and an important cultural property of Japan was made in the collaboration of Unkei and his child Tankei. This principal image of yosegi-zukuri (joined woodblock) construction is colorful and tinged in Song's style. It is a unique woodcarving image of Great Buddha and a masterpiece of the Kamakura period (1192-1333). It is called Migawari Shaka (an image of Gautama Buddha that cures the diseases of people's faces and heads and sacrifices itself for people's misfortunes. The body of the statue is 5.4 meters tall, and the total height including the plinth and mandoria is approximately 10 meters. In the past, a large statue of Buddha was called Joroku in Japanese. That is why this statue is commonly called Joroku-san. It prospered also as the Imperial Household's prayer place.
Kaikoji Temple has one of Kyoto's eight greatest Buddha images. LIke the Buddha images in the Saga Shakado Hall of Saga Seiryoji Temple and the Sembon Shakado Hall in the Daihoonji Temple, this statue is an object of deep faith. Moreover, it is said that the priest Saicho made the image of Benzaiten (the goddess of eloquence, music, and wisdom) here, which is known as one of the images of Seven Divinities of Good Luck (called Shichifukujin in Japanese) in Senzan. People believe that Benzaiten makes their all wishes come true.
Japan's Great Buddha ☆ Tochoji Temple Daibutsu, Fukuoka ☆ 福岡の東長寺大仏 ☆ Japan As It Truly Is
Tochoji has Japan's mammoth wooden Giant Buddha! This Daibutsu is 10.8m tall, weighs 30 tons, took 4 years to carve and was completed in 1992. Tōchōji is in the Gion area of Fukuoka City and is the oldest Buddhist Shingon temple in Kyushu. And seeing the Great Buddha (大仏, Daibutsu) is just 50 yen!
The temple was founded by Kukai in 806 AD.
This Tochoji Great Buddha is also a must-see, although the Todaiji in Nara and Kotokuin in Kamakura are much more famous.
Even so, this temple is mostly unknown to the tourist guide books, self-proclaimed experts, and even many of the Japanese nearby. It is never crowded with tourists, and easily accessible from the Fukuoka City Gion subway stop (Exit #1). Aside from the Great Buddha, you can see an expansive prayer area, pagoda, and small historical graveyard that has Kuroda 3 lords who ruled the area.
Be sure to go through the pitch black tunnel in the back and try and find your way out.
Open 9 AM - 4:45 PM.
There is a 50 yen charge to see the Buddha.
