Excerpt from the leaflet Museum scene - news from Mansfield museum, summer 2013:
Bark-covered walkways, artificial evergreens, lightning and sound effects...
We're looking forward to a woodland wonderland in Mansfield this Summer, as we put together the finishing flourishes to our annual Summer exhibition, due to open in August.
Each year we stage our very own Summer Exhibition - past favourites have included Golden Sands, complete with indoor beach, and Pop Goes Mansfield, which incorporated live music performances.
This year's exhibition is called Tree Tops and is all about the role that woodlands play in our lives. Although there will be a practical aspect to the display, we also intend to focus on the more playful side of forest life - the fairy tale dimension, if you like.
The exhibition will give an overview of the history of Britain's forests; look at our local woodlands; explore the flora and fauna of the world beneath the canopy and consider the interweaving of leaves, legend and literature.
To capture the feel of an imaginary wood, you can expect bark-covered walkways, artificial evergreens, lightning and sound effects and a host of other family-friendly features in what promises to be one of our most original and intriguing exhibitions ever.
As usual, the exhibition will be complemented by a wide range of forest-themed activities throughout the school holidays. So make sure you put Mansfield Museum in the calendar this summer - and be sure of a big surprise!

Mansfield - Mansfield Town 1950s ( excerpt ) - Past Lives Project
This footage was donated to Past Lives Project by Fred Hutchinson and Keith Morris. Fred owned a camera shop in Sutton in Ashfield for many years and he transferred this footage decades ago. Since then the details of the people who are in the film have been lost and we are hoping that we can find out more about who they were. The film shows the couple looking at a copy of a book called 'The History of Mansfield' by W. Horner Groves then driving around the town looking for the historic places portrayed.
pastlivesproject.com
Past Lives Project is an Arts Council England and Heritage Lottery Funded Project working in 8 areas across the Midlands. In each region we work with the community through open days, home visits, workshops and events with societies, schools and FE Colleges.
In each region we call out for amateur home cine film that illustrates daily life, local street scenes, people at work and families at play.
Past Lives Project digitises these home movies which are then edited in to new film which is screened with a live music performance.
The performance day includes spoken memories and photos that we have also gathered whilst working with the community, this forms part of an ongoing archive that is available online.
Through our Past Lives Project, Freefall Arts aim to raise awareness about how valuable these films are in the context of social history and to preserve them for future generations.

Mansfield Metal Box Factory Voices
Mansfield Museum's project to preserve the town's Metal Box heritage, generously funded by Renaissance East Midlands, reached a new stage, recently, with the digitisation of a wealth of material collected from current and ex-employees. The contributors' anecdotes, reminiscences and insider information, much of it garnered during the highly successful Memory Day held at Leeming Street last September (See Issue 10) have been edited by media production company Sound Delivery and are now freely available for you to view and/or hear. To watch a slide-show of images of the old factory, supported by fascinating commentary from knowledgeable staff past and present, simply type 'Metal Box Mansfield' into search on YouTube (youtube.com) or visit ourmansfieldandarea.org.uk and follow the links. To hear the memories of the factory's ex-workers, podcasts are now
In August freely available on iTunes and may be accessed by searching under Mansfield Museum. There are more to follow. Leaving the virtual world, meanwhile, we are now applying ourselves in earnest to the preparation of the hundreds of examples of tin-ware acquired at the autumn auction, in readiness for a major Metal Box exhibition towards the end of 2011. We also plan to convert this into a more modest permanent display, though the exact nature of this has still to be decided. In the meantime, why not log on to a feast of facts online about one of the town's most important industries?

TOUR OF MANSFIELD DAY 1
S2 E20 || SUBSCRIBE:
So whilst Wagga Wagga might have been the start of the road season, Mansfield for many of us is the beginning of the Tour season. But that probably undervalues the race itself. It has grown and grown in recent years and deserves to be a title in it's own right.
It's a three stage race, but the big change this year is to stage 2 which now finishes up a brutal 20min climb.
This weekend is also a chance to introduce you to some new faces, namely the Vic Squad who'll be doing most of the Victorian Road Series this year.
I hope the VLOG tells the rest of the story, thanks to Al and Dan for shooting most of the footage,. they did a great job considering they were neutral spares for the race.
