Mansion House ; Official Residence of Lord Mayor of Dublin
The Mansion House most famous features include the Round Room, where the First Dáil assembled on 21 January 1919 to proclaim the Irish Declaration of Independence. On 21 January 1969 a special fiftieth anniversary joint session of Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann assembled there and was addressed by the then President of Ireland, Éamon de Valera.
Externally, the distinctive metal portico over the main door was erected for the visit of Queen Victoria in 1900.
The Mansion House was built in 1710 by the merchant and property developer Joshua Dawson, after whom Dawson Street is named. Dublin Corporation purchased the house in 1715 for assignment as the official residence of the Lord Mayor. It retains this purpose to this day.
In the 1930s and 1940s, plans were made to demolish the building, and all other buildings on the block on which it is located (which covered an area on Dawson Street, Molesworth Street, Kildare Street and the North side of St. Stephen's Green), to enable the building of a new Dublin City Hall. However the decision of the Government to erect a new Department of Industry and Commerce on a site on the same block, on Kildare Street, led to the abandonment of the plans.
In August 2006, the loyalist paramilitary Ulster Volunteer Force claimed they had planted a bomb in the Mansion House in 1981, in an attempt to wipe out the Sinn Féin leadership at their party conference of that year. The claim led to a security alert at the house, as the Garda Siochana and army searched for the 25-year-old bomb.
We think that the most interesting places and locations for people to visit when they travel the world are those which belong to famous characters or those important people related to the country and the society as a whole, just like the case with the Mansion House which is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of Dublin since 1715 and thus attracting lots of those tourists who come to visit Dublin and check its old and historical buildings and places.
In addition to the occupants of the place - the Lord Mayors - there were also some important visitors to this place, such as Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace of Monaco, Pope John Paul II, Queen Victoria, Mother Teresa, and Nelson Mandela; making people more eager about the idea of going to this building and checking it from the outside.
The street on which the Mansion House is located in Dublin is named Dawson street which is named after Joshua Dawson who built the house back in 1710. Since 1715, this house has been used for the main reason and purpose, which is being the place where the Lord Mayor of Dublin will be residing.
In addition to the important visitors - or well known characters - which were welcomed in the Mansion House in Dublin, this place has also been welcoming a lot of international leaders, sporting heroes, as well as stars of stage and screen and music; that is why those who might have had the chance to enter this house or building were the ones who were attending a specific event and not just for a public tour - because they are most probably not allowed inside this place.
There are lots of events celebrated in the Mansion House - another way people get the chance to enter it - and this is loved by lots of Dubliners because they might have attended different memorable events inside, just as Christmas nights, sporting victories, or even some completed exams; for Dublin people it carries a whole different place in their hearts, unlike those who might be visiting the place to see the place where the Lord Mayor of Dublin is residing.
The only times of the year that the Mansion House might be open for public tours is on the last days of every summer month; May, June, July, August, and September and during this visit held in summer, the people will get the chance to know more about the experience of the previous Lord Mayors who used to live and work there because they will be the ones to share their stories; next time you plan to visit Dublin during the summer months and consider visiting the Mansion House, you should definitely book your vacation close to the last day of any of these months.
It is considered an interesting experience to come and visit the place where the Lord Mayor of Dublin lives and works every single day, but if you failed to come inside, it is still considered a chance to visit the place and check the way this old building looks like from the outside.
There are different places to think about visiting in Dublin and which include the Leinster House ( the Trinity College in Dublin ( some famous streets like Grafton Street ( and O'Connell Street ( or else checking the famous Molly Malone Statue ( or visiting Merrion Sqaure garden (

The Turning of the Sovereign Seal, at The Mansion House, Dublin on 21st January 2014, Ireland's Independence Day. The 21st January is Ireland's Independence day as the first Dail met on that day in The Mansion House in 1919.
So that the significance of 21st January 1919, is that the Irish people founded The Irish State. This they did with a 32 county mandate. The Irish State was founded on the 21st of January 1919.
For the first time ever the Lord Mayor Oisín Quinn, new Labour Party Lord Mayor of Dublin, would not allow the IRB to use the dining room, and so the 1916 proclamation was read out on the steps of The Mansion House.
This was announced beforehand in the media so, people presumed the event was cancelled. In October, Oisin Quinn campaigned on Grafton St. for a for a directly elected mayor. see video below
also, Ben Gilroy anti eviction campaigner, who attended last year was in court that day on a contempt charge. So, that was another reason more people did not attend.
But the latest word is that the current Lord Mayor, Christy Burke will not allow this ceremony to go ahead this year, inside the Mansion House.
