Visiting Mantenga Nature Reserve and Cultural Village in Swaziland | My Naturawl (3/7)
We visited the Mantenga nature reserve and cultural village where we immersed ourselves in Swati culture. This is a must visit in Swaziland.
Swazi Cultural Village in Manzini, Swaziland
Mantenga Nature Reserve and Cultural Village offers travellers to Swaziland the unique twin focus of discovering both Swazi culture and the local natural environment.
Cultural Village - Situated adjacent to the camp the Swazi Cultural Village is a living museum of old traditions and represents a classic Swazi lifestyle during the 1850's. A typical visit includes a 30 minute guided tour and a 45 minute dancing display. It is a great photo opprtunity.
The Mantenga Cultural Village is a large family homestead of sixteen huts, each with its own specific purpose as well as kraals for cattle and goats, reed fences that serve as windbreaks and various other structures. The building material is strictly traditional: poles, grass, reeds, leather stripes, earth and dried cow dung. With the traditional artifacts on display, the village illustrates many facets of the ancient Swazi way of life: social, economic and religious. The objective of the cultural village is to enable visitors from all over the world, as well as urbanised Swazis, to maintain a positive interest in Swazi cultural heritage. This includes language, customs and practices, rituals, dance, music, folklore, arts and crafts. After the its official opening, it was named Ligugu Lemaswati by his Majesty King Mswati III, meaning The pride of the Swazi People.
On entry, the village people, often wearing traditional clothing, will warmly welcome you. The standard Swazi greeting to the family is Yebo Nkosi. The village life is very relaxed and your guide will talk you through how the huts and traditional items are made as well as teach you the Siswati words for them. Interaction is encouraged, so try your hand at grinding maize and plaiting mountain grass or join in a Swazi song or dance. A taste of local food is sometimes possible, as well as traditional brew.
Ringing with the sounds of birds, barking baboons, drum beats and singing, this is one of the best value accommodation venues in Swaziland providing easy access to many surrounding attractions in Mbabane, Malkerns, Manzini, and of course the nearby Ezulwini Valley. Immediately within the nature reserve, the Swazi Cultural Village and the Mantenga Waterfallare popular attractions.
Previously known as Mantenga Tented Camp, this venue has been upgradedduring 2010 to offer rooms or cabins, on a bed and breakfast (B&B) basis. Although its spread out design resembles a typical nature reserve camp, we'd by more inclined to call this style of accommodation a lodge, as it is not self-catering and three meals a day can be sourced via the camp's central restaurant facility.
There is occasional wildlife in the area such as warthog, nyala and vervet monkey which can be spotted whilst walking between the facilities. They are quietly tolerant of human presence.
Although this small 725 hectare area was purchased as early as 1979 by the Swaziland National Trust Commission (a government body) it was only developed from 1994 onwards. Facilities are therefore relatively new and well-presented, with the most recent upgrade, being a substantial investment in terms of both the conversion from tented units to cottages and the very sumptuous furnishing thereof. The management of accommodation facilities and cultural village is typically put out to tender, and is the responsibility of a private sector operator.
The Mantenga area is a favourite launch pad for visitors wishing to undertake Swazi Trails activities, as the reserve is only 1km away from the company's trip departure point for white-water rafting, adventure caving, MTBing and guided tours.

Top 10 Things to See and Do in Swaziland
In the summer of 2013, I visited the African country of Swaziland, also known as the Kingdom of Eswanti, which is a tiny, landlocked principality that borders Mozambique and South Africa.
My Film Making Kit ►
Even though it’s small, it’s incredibly diverse. I want to take you on a tour of the top 10 things you have to see and do when you go there. Are you ready to come along with me? Let’s get started.
Mbuluzi, a private game reserve that boasts an amazing number of grazing animals like giraffes, impala, zebra, kudu and nyala. It is roughly 3,000 hectares in area and borders the Lubombo Mountains, Mlawula Nature Reserve and Hlane Royal Park. Mbuluzi doesn’t contain any predators, so it’s safe to drive, walk, or cycle through the park without the supervision of a guide, although you can reserve a game drive with a guide if you want.
Sibebe Rock, the second largest monolith in the world after Uluru in the Northern Territory of Australia, and one of Swaziland’s iconic attractions. It towers over 350 meters above the valley of the Mbuluzu River and was named after a rock climber who tragically lost his life scaling the rock.
Shewula Mountain Camp, Swaziland’s first community-owned eco-tourism attraction. This beautiful and unique camp, set in the Shewula Nature Reserve, offers village walks that allow visitors to get to know the local community and residents, witness traditional song and dance performances, visit a local healer, and enjoy the natural beauty of the reserve.
Swazi Candles Craft Market, a unique shopping center containing gift shops and boutiques that showcase the craftsmanship of local artisans, including wood carvers, basket weavers, jewelers, and mask makers. In the market’s namesake shop, Swazi Candles, you can buy colorful paraffin wax candles that have been molded and sculpted, by hand, into various animal shapes.
Swazi Trails is the only white water rafting tour operator in the country, and therefore this adventure is the only one of its kind in Swaziland. A trained Swazi Trails river guide will accompany you for either a half day or full day, depending on which package you buy, and no prior experience is needed on your part.
Hlane Royal National Park, the largest game park in Swaziland. The park covers roughly 85 square miles and features four of the Big 5 safari animals: elephants, rhinos, leopards, and my favorite, lions, like this guy I had to wake up super early to catch! It was also amazing to come across so many rhinos during my game drives.
Ngwenya Glass Factory in the town of Motshane. It is regarded as the most prestigious glass factory in Africa. Here, you can watch the professionals make beautiful and intricate glass creations, including decorative bowls, wine glasses, chess sets, and animals like whales, fish, gazelles and even the Big 5.
Mantenga Cultural Village, which features Swaziland’s top traditional song and dance show and is located in the beautiful Mantenga Falls Nature Reserve. After enjoying the traditional harmonies and energetic dances, you can tour a reconstruction of an 1850s Swazi hut village and learn about the tradition diet, customs, and family structure from local guides.
Mkhaya Game Reserve, one of Swaziland’s big game parks. Here, you can find a wide variety of wildlife, including black and white rhinos, elephants, giraffes, sable antelope, and buffalo. While the white rhino is endangered in Africa, Mkhaya is the best place in Swaziland to see one. The accommodations here are incredible.
Umhlanga Reed Dance, a fascinating, eight-day long cultural event that takes place at the Queen Mother’s Royal Residence, during which tens of thousands of the nation’s unmarried women cut reeds and carry them back to the Royal Residence, where they are used as windbreakers for the perimeter. The seventh day of the reed festival is a national holiday, and is when the king participates and thousands of spectators come out to see the women dance and celebrate the Queen Mother.
And there you have it! The top ten things you must see and do when you go to Swaziland. I hope you enjoyed this video, and that it inspired you to visit this amazing country. SWAZILAND Provides Safe and Authentic Travel Experience for the EXECUTIVE - Big Game, Wildlife Parks
SWAZILAND Provides Safe and Authentic Travel Experience for the EXECUTIVE - Big Game, Wildlife Parks
Swaziland is a country in Southern Africa, landlocked by South Africa in its west and Mozambique in the east. Swaziland's absolute monarchy is one of the oldest in Africa.
Swaziland, one of the last absolute monarchies in the world, is one of the smallest countries in Africa and has a well-earned reputation for friendliness in Southern Africa. It also contains several large game parks and reserves, which are sponsored by the government and are popular tourist destinations.
Compared to other countries in the region, Swaziland is known for its civility and peacefulness, despite similar problems with poverty and one of the world's worst AIDS crises. As of November 2008 the total reported percentage of those with HIV was listed as 30%; this, of course, does not include those who have not yet been tested. The AIDS epidemic has broken up the traditional extended family unit, leaving many young children orphaned and fighting for survival.
Swaziland is divided into four adminstrative districts: Hhohho (northwest), Lubombo (east), Manzini (central-west), and Shiselweni (south).
Artifacts indicating human activity dating back to the early Stone Age 200,000 years ago have been found in the Kingdom of Swaziland. Prehistoric rock art paintings date from ca. 25,000 B.C. The earliest inhabitants of the area were Khoisan hunter-gatherers. They were largely replaced by the Bantu tribes during Bantu migrations who hailed from the Great Lakes regions of Eastern Africa.
The autonomy of the Swaziland Nation was dictated by British rule of southern Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1881 the British government signed a convention recognizing Swazi independence. At the start of the Anglo Boer war, Britain placed Swaziland under its direct jurisdiction as a Protectorate. The Swaziland independence Constitution was promulgated by Britain in November 1963 in terms of which a legislative Council and an Executive Council were established. The first Legislative Council of Swaziland was constituted on 9 September 1964. Changes to the original constitution proposed by the Legislative Council were accepted by Britain and a new Constitution providing for a House of Assembly and Senate was drawn up. Elections under this Constitution were held in 1967. Since 1973, Swaziland has seen a rather quiet struggle between pro-multiparty activists and the monarchy. It gained independence from UK in 1968.
The Kingdom of Swaziland is surrounded on the north and south by South Africa, and on the east is bordered by Mozambique.
The Kingdom provides travellers the ideal gateway between KwaZulu-Natal and the Kruger National Park, as well as Johannesburg and Maputo - no better route is available with added advantage of discovering a whole new country filled with bygone African traditions and Swazi Culture.
Swaziland covers an area of approximately 193 kilometres from north to south, and 145 kilometres from east to west.
Small as it may be, Swaziland is an exciting tourist destination with its Arts and Crafts outlets and traditional markets and wildlife reserves.
At Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary tame birds and animals are free to come and go and wander through the camp grounds. Mkhaya Game Reservee offers visitors the opportunity of game viewing by open Landrover with guides.
A major attraction for the visit to Swaziland is the casinos located at the Royal Swazi Sun Hotel complex, in the heart of the Ezulwini Valley, between Mbabane and Manzini. Swaziland offers many scenic drives. North of Mbabane, the road to Luve is known as Pine Valley with a series of waterfalls on the Black Umbeluzi River and the granite heights of Bald Rock. forbes rich list London luxury shopping billionaire millionaire Monaco super rich private jet yacht entertainment luxs report us usa America uk London Donald trump Dubai elite executive arab ceo forbes Europe vip money lil wayne travel 5 star hotel super car bugatti Lamborghini Ferrari Porsche private jet 2014 2015 monaco luxury get rich gambling investment Beverly Hills Malibu Miami positive thinking super yacht mega yacht playboy mansion luxury lifestyle mansion Swaziland Africa tour tourism travel travel destination 5 star hotel luxury travel south Africa big game wildlife parks The drive to Piggs Peak, in the north is one of the most scenic in the country. The Malolotja National Park lies to the west of the road and here, after a stiff walk, you can view the Malolotja Falls, the highest in Swaziland. Swaziland also hosts a large number of internationally renowned hotels and a number of thermal springs where visitors can relax and unwind. Most are located at Ezulwini.
Swaziland might be among the smallest countries on the continent and one of Africa's remaining monarchies, but there's more than novelty value on offer here.
