Manthal Buddha Rock (Urdu: منٹھل چٹان) is a large granite rock on which picture of Buddha has engraved which probably dates back to 8 century. This rock is located in Manthal village of Skardu Town, in Pakistan. Buddha Rock is one of the most important relics of Buddhism in Skardu. It's about 3 kilometers from Sadpara Road. Sadpara road will lead to Satpara Lake.

Before arrival of Islam in the region of Gilgit-Baltistan the majority of the people were Buddhist and they had engraved the Buddha on many rock pieces. This Buddha carving was not known to the world till beginning of 20th century due to its remote location. In 1906 the Scottish traveler Ella Christie wrote a book on her journey to the Western Tibet and featured the carving in her book which gave it an international attention. Since then the government has taken many steps to preserve this monument and it is visited by tourists who visit the Skardu city.

I hope you guys are good. Today we are going to take you to a very astounding place, called Buddha Rock and it’s in Skardu. It’s on 30 minutes’ drive from the main city of Skardu. The rocks of this place have amazing stories to tell. There’s greenery every where but autumn is also very near so it will not last. You can see the beautiful surrounds for Skardu in this video, I hope you will like it.
The river which you see is coming from Deosai, so now we are going towards Buddha Rocks. Whenever you are visiting Skardu, do come to see these rocks because they are very near from the main city. Even if you don’t visit Buddha Rocks just look at this water it’s so clean and refreshing. You should really come to enjoy the views with this beautiful river flowing. If you have a stay of 4-5 days in Skardu do pay a visit to these rocks because they are a very famous tourism attraction site even for the foreigners especially those who believe in Buddhism. The road is also in very good condition so you can come here easily.
So now we have reached the Buddha Rocks finally as you can see. This place is famous as it is believed that Buddha himself did meditation here. As you can see there are various figures of Buddha carved out here. In 1975 these rocks came under Antiquities Act. Before this act they were open to the public and people have destroyed some of the carvings here by throwing stones and writing on them. There’s also an empty place at the top of the rock and it’s believed that if someone throws stones and they stay inside, all of the wishes of that person will come true.
This is a main attraction to those people who believe in Buddhism as it is a sacred place to them, I hope you have liked this place. I may also add that you will have to hike for at least 2-3 minutes from the road.
The roads which lead to the destinations are also very beautiful, I say this in almost every vlog. As you can see the beautiful surroundings, the water is gushing and there are spectacular mountains along the way. There’s one more village 30 minutes away from here and this river is coming from there. So this was todays vlog, I hope you will like it. Centuries have passed since Buddhists disappeared from Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), but Buddha still watches over the serene town of Skardu from the corner of a cliff. Immortalised in stone, the sage continues to radiate wisdom for those who seek. But sadly, there are none.
Resting at the edge of Manthal village on the left of a stream from Satpara Lake, the granite – known as the Buddha Rock – is pale and smooth. Believed to be carved between 8th and 10th centuries, the relic represents the glory of the past, of a time when men and women meditated in the footsteps of the ‘One Who Woke Up’.
It has the makings of a heritage site – bearing testimony to a tradition which has disappeared. Its significance goes beyond nationalities. Yet, it sits at the border of Manthal village, ignored and forgotten by the world.
