Moving East Gate/West Gate by Helicopter
Sasson Soffer has worked throughout his career as both a painter and a sculptor. Informed by the work of Mark Rothko and other Abstract Expressionist artists with whom he studied in New York in the early 1950s, Soffer's encaustic on panel paintings and steel sculptures display his interest in sweeping, gestural forms and monumental scale. Soffer's 1973 outdoor sculpture East Gate/West Gate is constructed of welded stainless steel tubes, arranged in a dynamic curvilinear composition. Soffer was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and later moved to New York where he attended Brooklyn College. Soffer's paintings were included in two Whitney Biennials, and his work is a part of the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York. The Indianapolis Museum of Art acquired this work as a gift from the Alliance of the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1980.
The sculpture, East Gate/West Gate by Sasson Soffer, is one of four IMA works on long-term loan to IUPUI. The three other sculptures were moved to IUPUI by truck in January 2009. Due to East Gate/West Gate's large size, 24x40x30 ft., the piece was transported via helicopter.
The IMA identified a flight path along the White River that presented the fewest interruptions to local traffic, but required seven bridges to be closed temporarily. Each bridge closed for only a matter of minutes.

Design Expedition to Ukraine Land Inspires
«Endangered Techniques»
The story of a first design expedition to Ukraine
When you hear “Ukraine”, you probably never think of it as your next journey destination, right? Well, maybe this story can change your opinion and open some perspectives for young European country with over 900 years history and booming modern design talents.
November 2018 was marked by one of the most significant events for Ukrainian design - the first design expedition in the history of Ukraine to distant centers of handicraft. Unique technologies, under the threat of extinction, were disclosed to European world design experts. The expedition was organized by Victoria Yakusha, founder and chief architect of the Yakusha Design Studio, as well as the author of the Ukrainian “live design” brand FAINA Collection.
The group of first design expedition:
• Roberto Baciocchi (legendary architect for Prada's stores, interior designer and art curator, Italy)
• Anna Lina Leno (interior designer, owner at Annaleena Studio, Sweden)
• Madeleine Asplund (interior stylist and designer at Asplund Klingsted Interior, blogger at Residence magazine, Sweden)
• Laura Snood (design expert, editor of ICON magazine, UK)
Program of the expedition:
• Enchanted culture of Dark steamed ceramics, Gavaretska village. Unique Ukrainian folk fishery born from clay, flame and smoke. This ancient technique, that was popular in the 1930s and even won first prize in Paris art exposition, today is abandoning: the furnaces are crushed, and the masters who own it can be count on fingers.
• Unique artisan blankets Lizhnyky, woven woolen products, that has fluffy pile on one or two sides. They are also called as Hutsul (Carpathian inhabitants) blankets. Lizhnyky are common in everyday life: they are covering beds, sofas, especially in winter.
• Ancestors sound in Trembitas, folk musical instrument, so-called Hutsul`s “mobile phone”. The centuries-old tradition has survived to this day. Shepherds, going high into the mountains, take trembita with them. But there left only a few masters who can make musical instruments, producing of which requires special conditions - the tree for especially good trembita has to be struck by lightning.
Throughout the week, the group discovered authentic corners of Ukraine – the unique smoked ceramics and its production, Hutsul sheep wool carpets “lizhniky” and the symbolism of its patterns, as well as the longest instrument in the world – trembita. Designers were surprised with the simplicity of some manufactories: Where are the factories?, - Roberto Baciocchi was amazed. Fueled by the extreme uniqueness of the products, design experts purchased black-smoked ceramics, wool blankets, handmade barrels, and painted Easter eggs. The patterns of the Carpathian lizhniky are very authentic, I think, the monochrome variants of these will suit a certain interior, - Italian architect commented on his purchase. ICON magazine editor Laura Snoad especially liked black-smoked ceramic candlesticks: “Christmas is coming; they’ll perfectly suit to my holiday styling.” Some of the products European guests made themselves – truly a memorable souvenir!

Happy Day by Tatiana Butrseva
In 1734, the Russian Empire began expanding its control and influence towards the east starting from the construction of the fortress city called Orenburg on its eastern border (in the Southern Urals). For this purpose, a settlement was founded here in 1735 - at the place where the Or and the Ural rivers converge.
From the decree of the Empress Anna Ioannovna : ... It is up to the city, with God, to build the appointed one again, to be called Orenburg, and in any case to call him and write this from us in this given name, in which the city grants and gives permission to all and every Russian people (except for fugitives from the service of our people and peasants, to the polluted salary of the established ones), merchants, craftsmen and raznochintsy, and foreign European states to foreign merchants and artists, the Tashkons of Bashkir people and our Kirghiz- Kaisatskim living with them and our newly -bornto the Karakalpak peoples, and from Asiatic countries, coming Greeks, Armenians, Indians, Persians, Bukharans, Khivans, Tashkens, Kalmyks and others, of every rank and faith, to settle, live, trade and trade with all trades, and unrestricted, without any danger and retention.....
Orenburg subsequently became a major trading centre between European Russia and Central Asia. The city becomes a major distribution centre for cattle and meat from the Kazakh steppes (in 1894, the first city slaughterhouse was opened). In 1881, the first in Russia factory for manufacturing condensed milk started and by 1894, construction took place of Kazan Cathedral.....
Following the Revolution, the population of Orenburg increased six fold and was renamed, in 1938, to Chkalov in honour of the test pilot Valery Chkalov .The city returned to Orenburg in 1957.....
TV Zemplin: Study workshop of the Slovakia 07 - 09.11.2012_part.1
Part of the program for the crossborder cooperation ENPI, the first study workshop took place, which was participated by representatives from Slovakia and Ukraine. In order the third Slovak-Ukraine project with the title Creation of First contact centers in Ukraine and their mutual cooperation has the goal of creating 2 advisory centers for small and middle sized businessmen.
Peter Litavec - director of Regional advisory and information center, Poprad: At the start of the 90s the EU wanted to help with the development of small and middle sized businesses and in Slovakia, small and middle sized business started to be created. An initiative to found a center for the support of businesses had appeared. First three centers were founded in Poprad, Martin and Nitra and in the year 1992 more followed up to 18 centers in Slovakia.
At the workshop were represented seven directors of first contact centers, regional, advisory and information centers and business innovative centers with the shortcut BIC.
Patrik Dluhoš - director of Business incubator, Spišská Nová Ves: BIS is a business advisory, processing of applications for eurofunds and education of starting businessmen. Also, it operates the TV Reduta, ergo a regional broadcast and industrial park incubators, where we basically offer the renting of non-residential spaces for starting businessmen and in the industry park for properly working native and foreign businessmen.
Concrete presentations were supposed to inform Ukraine founders about how the centers work and how they differentiate.
Katarína Škrdlová - director of First contact center, Veľký Krtíš: Our main focus is advisory for local unemployed, who want to be in business. Given, that we have a longtime high rate of unemployment and in the records for longtime unemployed are mostly people above 50 years or those, who just finished high school or universities, ergo absolvents.
Every information center is different and unique. First contact center Levoča tries to connect the public and private sector, which would resolve problems of the concrete locality.
Andrea Hradiská - director of First contact center, Levoča: The most important projects, which were important to us are Woman, Mother on the road to success, where we supported and motivated women on maternity leave to stay in the job market in order to not fall out of the context of their personal and work life.
Some centers work in the area of Slovakia for over 20 years. Each of them fulfills a different task but the idea is the same - to help people, and exactly this basic task should be spread by founders of centers in Ukraine. One day workshop of Slovaks and Ukrainians doesn´t end. The visit of centers in the region of Tatras awaits them. From Spišská Sobota for television Zemplín, Simona inkabová.

IDOLS | The Art of Heavy Metal
Triptych: Global Arts Workshop
30.10 - 14.11.2018
The exhibition explores the visual dimension of one of the most mysterious and expressive forms of musical expression in the history of civilisation: heavy metal music. Born in the countercultural explosion of the 1960s, heavy metal has since become the soundtrack to rebellion across the five continents, with its distorted guitars, fast riffs, guitar solos, irreverent lyrics, and an inimitable visual image of both its artists and fans – spikes, leather and chains, fire and smoke, skulls and and altars.
Norway’s contribution to the arts has always had a sombre, expressive quality, rooted in the traditions of Norse mythology, folk traditions, and the beauty of the Norse landscape, with its fjords, forests, and skies illuminated by the Aurora Borealis and the midnight sun. Among its key contributors in literature are Henrik Ibsen and Knut Hamsun, in art – Edvard Munch and Theodor Kittelsen, in music – Edvard Grieg and Norwegian black metal, heavily influenced by its predecessors. In ‘IDOLS’, iconic Norwegian artists such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Abbath, and Gaahl are a formidable presence among their international peers, who have defined the evolution of heavy music worldwide lyrically, musically, and visually.
IDOLS: The Art of Heavy Metal presents the leading proponents of the heavy metal underground as photographed by ESTER SEGARRA during the last 15 years. The paintings of NIKITA TSOY explore the sensory experience of heavy metal fans – the headbangers. The sculpture of IGOR GRECHANYK draws on the mythological and occult themes that underpin heavy metal music.
