Indigenous Schoo Based Trainee, Shannen Casters (High Definition)
Shannen is a 17 year old, Indigenous School Based Trainee, completing a Certificate III in Hospitality through the Brisbane based, multi Award-winning, Emporium Hotel. She originates from Townsville and now, when not in Brisbane at school, resides on Palm Island, part of a group of tiny islands off the coast of Townsville in far north Queensland. Shannen’s workplace is the Emporium Hotel in Brisbane.
“I absolutely love working at the Emporium Hotel,” Shannen said.
“I have been given lots of opportunities to do different things. I started in housekeeping, have done some work in communication, events and spent some time in the Patisserie. I felt a bit lonely in Housekeeping, I really like the social part about working in the other areas – I have even done some Barista training and my coffee is definitely getting better! I have had a lot of support from my work colleagues, especially; Katrina York (Food & Beverage Manager) and Sophie Oddo who is my friend and team leader. Without their support, and everybody else in my life, I would have found find it difficult.
“My work experience at the Emporium Hotel has really made me want to stay in hospitality and tourism. I like that tourism is multi - cultural, just like Stuartholme School. I am interested in attending Bond University to further my studies and my ideal job would be working for Qantas Airways.”
This year Shannen accepted a leadership role as Captain of the Boarding House and is on ‘track’ to be the first Palm Island graduate from the school.

Chillagoe
Chillagoe is located 140km west of Mareeba. It was once a thriving mining town for a range of minerals, but is now reduced to a small zinc mine and some marble quarries.
A highlight of Chillagoe was the remnants of the towns historic copper smelter ruins which was plagued by political scandal during it's operation until it closed in 1943.
At it’s peak in 1917, Chillagoe had a population of about 10,000 with thirteen hotels, two newspapers, and a hospital. Once the smelters closed, Chillagoe plunged into a decline it has never recovered from.
One person who is making the most is Tom Prior, born and bred in Chillagoe was a stop worth making to check out his historical collection of Ford vehicles.
He has a unique collection from a Model A to 1965 Shelby Mustang as well as a red-trimmed white 1970 XW Ford Falcon GT 351c kept in a carcoon through to many older trucks and ex army vehicles in various condition.

AIRLIE BEACH, WHITSUNDAYS AUSTRALIA: Honeyeater Lookout 4K
Looking for things to do in Airlie Beach? Why not check out the best views in Airlie! It's one of the best hikes in Whitsundays Australia.
WHERE:
Honeyeater is a 8.2km return track. You can easily walk from downtown Airlie Beach as the shortest route is 700m to the trailhead. Once you leave the main town area it's mostly an uphill walk. If driving, you can park on the road near the trailhead.
HOW:
The track starts at the top of Kara Crescent in the Airlie Beach suburbs. Turn left from the top of Kara Cres to the Conway Circuit sign and staircase. Once on the trail, follow the Conway circuit for 2.3 km to the Honeyeater lookout turn-off. Follow the trail to the Honeyeater Lookout with views over Cannonvale and the Whitsunday Islands. Return via the same route.
TIPS AND OTHER DETAILS:
Keep your eyes peeled for Australian Lace Monitors (goannas). They are super common on the trail. We’ve hiked to Honeyeater Lookout a dozen times and have seen at least one on every hike.
Honeyeater Lookout is part of the 27 km Conway Circuit in Conway National Park. The recommended time to complete the entire Conway Circuit is 3 days/2 nights hiking or 4 hours for fit and experienced mountain bikers. Although the name is Conway ‘Circuit’ it’s not an actual looped circuit so check out the maps on the Queensland Government site.

Mount Bowen Climb - Hinchinbrook Island
Check out the view from a walk up Mount Bowen (1121m) on October 17th 2002.
To answer most of the questions I get asked...
We went over from Dungo in a 12ft dinghy, pulled it up the beach at Warrawilla creek as the sun popped up over the horizon at 05:44am.
Only took day packs to make the walk easier and we were back at Lucinda before sunset.
We took a couple sandwiches and 2 x 2L empty cordial bottles each for water that we filled from the creek. The last water on this day was a few hours before reaching the top.
And yes I didn't wear shoes, a fire went through recently and it was fairly easy going.
There's a few paths to take to get to the top, we followed Warrawilla creek up to the saddle, then turned left and walked along the ridge to the peak.
It was about a 5 hour walk up and 4 hours down and we chilled out at the top for a while to have lunch.
Mount Bowen is the highest peak on Hinchinbrook Island in Queensland, Australia. The Great Barrier Reef is visible from the mountain top, as are the townships of Cardwell and Halifax.

Hinchinbrook Island Thorsborne Trail
SUBSCRIBE:
Hinchinbrook Island, located about 6km off the coast at Cardwell, a small town halfway between Townsville and Cairns in north Queensland, falls within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Protected since 1932, it is one of Australia's largest island national parks.
Hinchinbrook's rugged 400sq.km landmass has been shaped by the seasonal rains and tidal swells of the Wet Tropics. An intricate network of creeks and waterways threads across the island; swollen with monsoon rainwater during the humid summer months, they give birth to falls that thunder through the island's rock country. During the winter months, the waterways gradually drain and evaporate, leaving many creeks dry. On Hinchinbrook's coastline, sweeping beaches, mangrove-fringed forests and rocky headlands meet the Coral Sea.
Twice a day, its tides fill and drain the island's inlets and tidal channels. Known for its varied ecosystems, Hinchinbrook is home to heath-covered mountains, melaleuca and palm wetlands, eucalypt and casuarina woodlands, and lush, tropical rainforests. Its mangrove forests, fringing reefs and seagrass beds are important habitats for fish and marine species, such as snubfin dolphins, dugongs and green turtles, as well as saltwater crocodiles.
