Taiwan Purple Butterfly Valley
Purple Butterfly Valley is not a specific geographical name, but a term used by butterfly researchers to represent the biological phenomenon of Euploeini butterflies overwintering en masse. Every winter, it is conservatively estimated that at least a million Euploeini butterflies glide on purple wings to the holy mountain of the Rukai and Paiwan Tribes in south Taiwan, Maolin, and take shelter in warm valleys at the foot of Dawu Mountain. About six hundred thousand butterflies winter in Purple Butterfly Valley, which along with the Monarch butterfly's winter home in Mexico is one of only two mass wintering sites known in the world.

DaAiTV_DaAi Headlines_20110207_Come see the butterflies
The valley of purple milkweed butterflies in southern Taiwan's Maolin sustained damage during Typhoon Morakot of 2009. Luckily, the migratory butterflies have returned to the valley once again to take shelter from the winter cold. Now is a perfect time to witness such wonders.
---Purple milkweed has returned!---
Purple milkweed butterflies swarm the sky and the forests. This is the world renowned valley of purple milkweed butterfly right here in Taiwan.
---Come here or go to Mexico---
Every winter, in the valleys of Kaohsiung's Maolin, one can find hordes of the purple butterfly. The migratory species can only be seen in two places in the world: one is in Mexico, and the other is Taiwan.
Maolin National Scenic Area chief, Wu Maosheng: Through the efforts of our butterfly conservation groups, we concluded that this area did not sustain too much damage, and as you can see, purple milkweed butterflies have returned to Maolin once again.
---Make reservation online first---
Although the national scenic area sustained damage during Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and is still under repair, rest assured the butterflies have returned, but remember to make an online reservation for a visit to the valley.
{Trip} Maolin Trip_Day 2_Maolin, Duona/茂林之旅_第二天_茂林, 多納
Second day of our trip to the Maolin National Scenic Area. At Maolin we went butterfly watching and we saw thousands of crow butterflies in the forests there. From Maolin we headed to the village of Duona, passing Duona Bridge, Dragon Head and Snake Head mountains. At Duona we saw slate houses and had Aiyu for refreshment.

Migrating Butterflies Arrive
The only species of winter migrating butterflies in Asia can now be seen in Maolin District, Kaohsiung. Purple crow butterflies appear in November and can be seen for a period of four and a half months. The Maolin National Scenic Area Administration calls the butterfly-filled valley a natural wonder of the world.
Butterfly Migration
Purple crow butterflies filled the sky in Yunlin County’s Linnei Township this afternoon. Taiwan’s National Freeway Bureau immediately suspended a northbound outer lane to allow safe passage for the butterflies. ##Each year around this time, butterflies migrate northward from Kaohsiung’s Maolin and end up in Miaoli’s Nanzhuang. With today’s pleasant weather and rising temperatures, some 900 butterflies pass by every minute, setting a new record.

A Brief Introduction of the Breathtakingly Beautiful Euploea #1
Taiwans Euploea (purple-spotted butterfly) is a rare species of butterflies that migrates in the winter. As soon as cold, wet winter weather arrives, the Euploeas migration cycle starts. They seek shelter in the warm Maolin Nation Scenic Area in southern Taiwan every year from December to March. At the Purple Butterfly Valley , you will be able to spot hundreds of thousands of these purple beauties dancing in the air. Flying in massive quantities, they sometimes transform themselves into rare ecological wonders such as butterfly waterfall, butterfly pond, and butterfly tree.【The information from Tourism Bureau Ministy of Transportation and Communication, Republic of China(Taiwan)】

Maolin's Three Black Treasures.mpg
When traveling in Maolin in the winter, there are three dark things you can pay special attention to: black rice, the traditional Rukai stone-slab housing, and purple crow butterflies.
Every year from December to March of the following year, purple crow butterflies in northern and central Taiwan migrate south to places such as the valleys of Maolin in Kaohsiung.
Chen Cheng, Butterfly Expert:
The best time to watch butterflies is from 8am when the sun is up until noon. When the weather is nice, they'll come out of the valleys to drink water and get some sun.
There are only two mass butterfly movements in the world - one in Mexico and the other here. And as these butterflies bathe in the sun and sip on fresh nectar, they're also practically posing for photos. The trick is to stay in one place and just wait for them to spread their wings. They take their time, so you can take yours too.
This is Duona, a Rukai village, where tribespeople seem to be busy tying together black millet at the moment.
Only we have black millet rice. They're black on the outside and white on the inside. When a man falls in love with a woman, his mother will make these millet bouquets for him to bring to her house. It's a show of affection.
Speaking of the Rukai, their traditional home is made of mostly slate. Ma-le, a local artist, built this house. He says most of the time is spent gathering the material and that sometimes it takes one to two years, but putting it all together only takes three months at most with the help of other villagers.
Ma-le, Artist:
These are designed to keep invaders at bay, and to keep temperature levels from fluctuating. The low roof forces visitors to bow when entering the house, so as they're coming in, they're paying respect to the host at the same time.
Purple crow butterflies, black millet and slate houses make up the three black treasures of Maolin. But while you're here, don't forget about the landscape in the background, for they're part of the attraction, and the reason why directors and photographers like shoot and film here.

Butterfly Migration
Every year in the middle of May, millions of purple crow butterflies migrate from southern to northern Taiwan. Along the way the butterflies stop to rest and reproduce in Miaoli County''s Zhunan Seaside Forest Recreation Park. It''s the butterflies'' pit stop of choice because of the abundance of nectar plants for food, and black creeper vines to protect their larva from predators. The butterflies can be seen there until September.
