Lithuanian Holocaust, 1940s - Film 96946
Map - Tallinn [?], the capital of Estonia, is marked as Reval. There is no date on the map. The camera zooms in on Lithuania. An almost skeletal corpse. Dead people naked - lots of them. German soldiers standing to attention. A man standing between a Latvian and a swastika flag. I think he is Julius Steicher but that is just a guess. A document in German dated 9 May 1942. German officers shaking hands. What appears to be a few civilians with them. German soldiers at attention, a couple of them saluting. German officers inspecting the troops. German officers presenting medals. Eyes. A still picture of a burning building. A still picture of a German soldier. Something burning. Eyes. Light passing across the ground. Something burning. A face. A face, a man with a beard. A woman? A man with a beard. Snow on the ground. A man with a fur hat on in the snow. He is quite animated and looking around. He is in a clearing in some woods. The camera goes around the clearing looking at the trees. A gate. In front of the church is a small mews, on the left are a few single storey buildings and on the right is what seems to be a two storey house. Some documents in Latvian. A German soldier, whom we have seen before. Some statistics presumably the number of people in various categories who have been killed. 'Likvideto' is probably liquidated in Latvian.
Vilnius Travel Guide - Lithuania Charming Memories
Vilnius Travel Guide - Lithuania Charming Memories
Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. It lies in the valley of the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers. Along with Linz, Austria, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture in 2009. The word Vilnius is a masculine form of the Vilnia river's name (which is feminine) and refers to the river surge.
Vilnius has always been a multi-national city populated with Lithuanians, Poles, Germans and Slavs from the immemorial time, later on with Jews as well. Although the original city location was lost due to erosion, the present day Old Town reappeared in the Middle Ages.
Although the Old Town is one of the largest in Europe, it can easily be explored on foot. Susisiekimo paslaugos operates buses and trolleybuses in Vilnius. A single ticket for either bus or trolleybus use costs €1(, purchased from the driver (cash only) or ~€0.70/30min if a Vilniečio kortelė (Vilnius Citizen Card) is purchased from a kiosk, PayPost outlet, Post office or Maxima supermarket for €1.50. When changing buses, you need a new paper ticket.
There are several well known foreign car rental companies as well as several domestic companies in Vilnius. City-Bee operates a car sharing network where you can rent a car by the hour. There is no contract nor monthly fee, you pay only for the service when you use the car, no parking expenses when you are not using it. There are 13 pick-up points throughout the city, mostly in the centre and some relevant points in northern districts.
Vilnius Old Town is a city area which began to develop extensively around the Middle Ages and it eventually became surrounded by a defensive wall after some time. The wall was distinguished by its strong surroundings and its shape for a long period of time, but this area is now called Old Town and has a separate status in the Vilnius administrative division. While the urban structure reflects the earliest development from c. 14th century, the architecture of the buildings is mostly from Baroque and Classicism periods with some examples of Renaissance and Gothic, to a lesser extent. One should keep in mind that medieval Vilnius was once a wooden city. The huge fires ravaged Vilnius several times since 1513 to 1749. Therefore, many buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries (still considered new) have Gothic and Renaissance cellars, many of which now are occupied with restaurants, bars or shops. One particular nice area is a block of artisan guilds that is notorious because of its evil fate: 6 Sep 1941 the two Jewish ghetto, commonly known as Vilnius Ghetto, were established. The ghetto operated until 24 Sept 1943. In 1994, the Old Town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In both Old Town and the Centre there are plenty of cafés. You simply can walk and choose the one you like or ignore if not in mood, not much effort is needed. There are chains of coffee shops and you can easily find them without a guidance.
There are 65 churches in Vilnius. Like most medieval towns, Vilnius was developed around its Town Hall. Pilies Street, the main artery, links the Royal Palace with Town Hall. Other streets meander through the palaces of feudal lords and landlords, churches, shops and craftsmen's workrooms. Narrow, curved streets and intimate courtyards developed in the radial layout of medieval Vilnius.

Reb Yitskhok from Vilna (in April 2016)
Reb Yitskhok, a Brooklyn rabbi, was born and grew up in Vilna. He recalls Savitsh Street, where his family lived, the school where he studied, and three different synagogues that his family attended. He was incarcerated in the Vilna Ghetto from its first day (6/7 Sept 1941) to its last (23 Sept 2943), when he was sent to a slave labor camp in Estonia and then to Stuthoff. He is beloved by generations of his former pupils in Brooklyn.

Miracle of Faith: Lithuania's Churches
A majority of Americans couldn't find Lithuania on a world map, but one thing visitors to this country northeast of Poland can't fail to notice are its churches. Many date back centuries surviving two world wars and a fifty year long Soviet occupation in the process, and seem to be everywhere across the land in towns big and small.
Many are also beautiful, and here to illustrate is a sample in a variety of locations and architectural styles. Accompanying music courtesy of New Age artist Enya's A Day Without Rain. Enjoy the show!

The Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth
In many respects, The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth resembled the United States of America, albeit in the pre-modern era. The aim of this lecture is to present the similarities between the two political entities, pointing to analogies between the two systems of government and the thoughts and attitudes that spawned them.

To Live and Die with Honor The Story of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
Jewish fighters launched the heroic Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, on April 19, 1943. 13,000 Jews were killed in the ghetto during the uprising - some 6,000 among them were burnt alive or died from other causes. The Germans had planned to liquidate the Warsaw ghetto in three days, but the heroic ghetto fighters held out for more than a month.
Throughout Europe, Jewish partisan and resistance units displayed remarkable courage in resisting the enemy despite the overwhelming military superiority of the Nazi war machine. Over 30,000 Jewish men and women served as partisans in the forests of Eastern Europe. Armed Jewish resistance took place in approximately 60 ghettoes, 5 major concentration/death camps & 18 forced labour camps
The annual March of the Living program brings thousands of young people from around the world each year on Holocaust Remembrance Day to Auschwitz-Birkenau to honour the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and to pledge to build a better world for all humanity.
After visiting other places of Nazi German persecution as well as once thriving sites of Jewish life and culture, participants travel to Israel, the birthplace and homeland of the Jewish People.
In Israel, they tour the length and breadth of the land, visiting its ancient and modern sites, as well as commemorating Israel's fallen soldiers on Yom Hazikaron and celebrating Israel's independence on Yom Ha'atsmaut.
The Book Smugglers of the Vilnius Ghetto | Lecture by David Fishman
Public Lecture
Prof. David Fishman (Jewish Theological Seminary)
The Book Smugglers of the Vilnius Ghetto
May 16, 2017
The lecture was based on the research by the same name, that was published in October 2017. David Fishman's The Book Smugglers is the story of ghetto inmates who rescued thousands of rare books and manuscripts—first from the Nazis and then from the Soviets—by hiding them on their bodies, burying them in bunkers, and smuggling them across borders.
