Scientists Can't Explain the Mysterious Zone of Silence
Pilot Francisco Sarabia was flying over a patch of desert land in Mexico when his instruments started to act increasingly odd. His radio equipment was failing too. The man had to make an emergency landing in the middle of nowhere. Little did he know that this nowhere would be later dubbed the Zone of Silence, and the mystery behind this place would equal that of the infamous Bermuda Triangle.
So if you ever find yourself in a desert, 25 miles away from Ceballos, Mexico, and just 400 miles to the south of El Paso, Texas, get yourself ready - you're in the Mapimí Silent Zone, and some bizarre things might start to happen right away.

SUMMARY:
- Weird radio silence isn't the only oddity of the creepy Zone. Like, what’s that weird trio that locals keep meeting in the Zone? They’re two men and a woman. Every time people see them, they’re wearing bizarre clothing that isn't suitable for a journey in the desert whatsoever.
- On top of all that, the Zone of Silence is known as a 30-mile (50 km) patch of deserted land where meteorites come crashing down on an eerily regular basis. In the 20th century alone, there were quite a number of such crashes.
- On July 11, 1970, the US launched an ATHENA rocket from the Air Force base in Green River, Utah. But here's the thing: the rocket was supposed to land somewhere in the area of White Sands in New Mexico. Instead, it went off course and, as if being pulled by some external force, crashed right in the heart of the Zone of Silence.
- In the process, the search party could tell that something was tampering with all their communications. That's why it was incredibly difficult to coordinate the work of the teams.
- Scientists have been trying to explain the things happening in the Zone of Silence for years. The most plausible conclusion they've drawn so far is the influence of minerals that are deposited deep underground.
- On the other hand, some experts disagree that the Zone of Silence attracts more meteorites than any other place on Earth.
- But even skeptics can't deny that there’ve been cases of radio communication loss and weird signal tampering. On the other hand, this phenomenon may have another rational explanation: the Zone of Silence is surrounded by a mountain range which can easily cause interference.
- But even without these stories and blood-chilling legends, the zone is nothing short of marvelous. Scientists say that the environment of the area is genuinely unique, with its own flora and fauna species.

Mystery of Mexico's Zone of Silence
The Mapimí Silent Zone (Spanish: La Zona del Silencio) is the popular name for a desert patch near the Bolsón de Mapimí in Durango, Mexico, overlapping the Mapimí Biosphere Reserve. It is the subject of an urban myth that claims it is an area where radio signals and any type of communications cannot be received.

Bolson tortoise - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The Bolson tortoise , also called the Mexican giant tortoise or yellow-margined tortoise, is a species of tortoise from North America. Of the four North American tortoise species, it is the largest, having a carapace length of about 46 centimeters. It lives in a region of the Chihuahuan Desert known as the Bolsón de Mapimí, which is located in north-central Mexico.
The Bolson tortoise was discovered only in 1959. The legend is that a group of biologists working in the Bolsón de Mapimí were at a ranch and saw chickens eating out of a large tortoise shell. They inquired about the origin of the shell and the locals responded by saying that it was, “la tortuga grande del desierto,” the big turtle of the desert.
In 1979 the 340,000 hectare Mapimi Biosphere Reserve was created to protect the Bolson Tortoise and other unique flora and fauna of the Bolsón de Mapimí. Despite this designation, cattle ranching and mining still occur in the Reserve. Whether this is detrimental to the tortoise is not known.
The most recent research, published in 1991 from data collected in 1983, estimates that fewer than 10,000 tortoises remain in the wild. Populations have declined mostly due to overcollecting for food and the pet trade. Incursion of roads, railroads and agricultural development have accelerated the decline of the species in the last 40 years. In the central portion of its range locals are keenly aware of the tortoise’s protected status and aid in its conservation. However, in the northeastern portion of its range, near La Sierra Mojada, populations of the tortoise are low. It is believed that tortoises are still collected and eaten in this area. Additionally, extensive brush clearing operations are being conducted to make way for cattle grazing. In 2008, following the construction of federally subsidized ethanol plants, extensive corn farming operations began within the Mapimi Biosphere Reserve. Farms have been tilled in tortoise habitat, despite its protected status.

Most Mysterious And Dangerous Zone Of Silence | ఆధునిక పరికరాలను మింగేస్తున్న ఎడారి | With Subtitles
The Mapimi Silent Zone is the popular name for a desert patch near the Bolson de Mapimi in Durango, Mexico, overlapping the Mapimi Biosphere Reserve. It is the subject of an urban myth that claims it is an area where radio signals and any type of communications cannot be received.
However, communications equipment tends to work properly in the zone. Guides assert that the zone moves around; as a result locals are highly skeptical of the zone's existence.
On the day of 11th July, 1970 an Athena rocket being used in a training exercise by the US Air Force lost control, accidentally invaded Mexican air space, and landed in the desert region of Durango hundreds of miles from the planned destination. The rocket was carrying two small containers of Cobalt 57, a radioactive element. Immediately, a team of covert specialists arrived to find the fallen rocket. The aerial search extended over three weeks. Finally, when the rocket was found, a road was made to transport the wreckage, as well as a small amount of contaminated top soil. All these operations were made under a fair amount of security, spurring rumors and myths, among the locals about what was happening.
A local named Jaime was hired as 'Capitan' to guard the rocket while the US prepared to take it back, which after a couple of weeks of preparation, they did. However, Jaime had rather liked the attention and money that the missile had brought, and began playing up the rumors that the strange incident had generated.
The landowners, and potential hotel builders, all agreed that this was indeed very 'special' land. A handful of scientists were then said to have confirmed these strange phenomena – though these studies are, unsurprisingly, very difficult to find – and the legend was formed.
Among the legends, radios didn’t work there, inside a silent zone you cannot hear the conversations of other people, very tall people in 'tight silver suits' are often seen, it is a pole where 'Earth energy' is concentrated, 'light' spheres could be seen flying over the zone, UFO’s land here, and so on.
The phenomena is now claimed to have been first reported in the 1930s by Francisco Sarabia, a Mexican pilot, who claimed that his radio had mysteriously failed to function while flying over the zone. Similar claims have been made by other persons who have visited the zone, that radio signals didn’t work and compasses were unusable. Other claims are that the area attracts meteorites and causes various mental problems.
People now come from all over to experience the area, look for the ever illusive 'silent zones', and sometimes attempt communication with otherworldly beings. Though visitors may be surprised to find their compasses and radios working just fine, an experienced guide will remind them that since the zones move, it can be hard to locate them.
Unfortunately these new age and paranormal enthusiasts, known locally as zoneros or silenciosos, are now having an adverse effect on the desert area that contains the silent zone. By collecting and keeping both natural and historical artifacts they find in the dessert, they are depleting the area of finite natural and historical resources. They have also caused some irritation to the Mapimí Biosphere Reserve an ecological research station, which is concerned about being associated with either the silent zone or the 'zoneros'.

S. Korea seeks UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status for DMZ
비무장지대, DMZ 접경 생물권 보전지역 추진
South Korea is seeking to register its areas near the Demilitarized Zone to be part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves,... an inter-governmental initiative to promote environmental sustainability.
It hopes this can open the road for joint environmental protection projects with North Korea.
Kim Hyo-sun reports.
South Korea has registered five counties in Gangwon-do Province, located along the inter-Korean border and Yeoncheon-gun County of Gyeonggi-do Province as UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
They include Cheorwon, Hwacheon, Yang-gu, Inje and Goseong counties encompassing an area of over 180-thousand hectares.
The whole of Yeoncheon-gun County, excluding the DMZ, which spans over 58-thousand hectares has also been registered.
While the five Gangwon-do Province counties registered for the initiative in 2012,... such a move lacked support from local residents.
South Korea's resort island of Jeju is also seeking to have the entire island registered as biosphere reserve,... expanding from the currently designated area of Hallasan Mountain and its surrounding areas.
Taking this opportunity,... South Korea's Ministry of Environment hopes to carry out environment preservation projects jointly with North Korea.
A total of 686 sites across 122 countries have been registered as UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
