James Booker full live @ Maple Leaf Bar 1983
- Astonishing concert from James Booker -
- Tracklist below -
JAMES BOOKER what ?
James Carroll Booker III - December 17, 1939 – November 8, 1983 - was a New Orleans rhythm and blues musician born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Booker's unique style combined rhythm and blues with jazz standards.
Musician Dr. John described Booker as the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced.
Flamboyant in personality, he was known as the Black Liberace.
This is the full concert uploaded by another user - lynchindis - in 4 parts. This great guy has a channel fully dedicated to James Booker, go take a tour, great sound there. And thanks mate for sharing this amazing gig.
--WHEN DID IT TAKE PLACE ?
They say October the 28th 1983, 11 days before he died.
--WAS IT THE LAST GIG ?
No, according to americanbluesscene : The last show he performed there was on October 31, 1983, with only five patrons in attendance. For the next show on November 7th , he didn’t show up at all.
By the way, that article is heavily detailed and precise - good to read if you wanna know more about James Booker.
--CAN I GET THE VIDEO IN A BETTER QUALITY ?
Apparently, there's a torrent and a DVD with this content in a better quality : Video: NTSC 720x480 , Audio 48kHz 16 bit .. hard to know i cannot get them.. And i didn't test it.
--BUT
Some searchs later, i found a library that is holding archives of this : Howard-Tilton Memorial Library in Tulane University.
They have special collections, you can find it in Cox 10 Productions VHS collection, 1982-2002 | Hogan Jazz Archive ,
Series 2: Music City
Videotape : 18/19/20 are on James Booker.
--However, this videotape would last only 52 min.
At the end of October 1983, filmmaker Jim Gabour captured Booker's final concert performance for a series on the New Orleans music scene. The series, entitled Music City, was broadcast on Cox Cable and included footage from the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans and a six-and-a-half-minute improvisation called Seagram's Jam.
On a forum i noticed this Please note that Seagram's Jam was not included in the Cox Cable broadcast and therefore is not included in this torrent.
So, you may see the full performance in their Jim Gabour Collection video Recordings at that same Library.
If someday, somehow, this help someone to find the archive in that library, please let me know ! i will be very delighted and it will make my day whatever my situation is.

NEW ORLEANS
New Orleans Jazz Fest 2009 Part 2 - Although Jazz Fest dominates New Orleans' music scene for two weekends in April and May each year, the French Quarter's main street continues to be the artery through which the beat and pulse constantly flow. Between the two weekends, the festival spreads to bars and clubs, and on every corner along Bourbon Street crowds collect to marvel at the brass groups, guitarists and lithe black kids flash-tapping under street lights.

Walter “Wolfman” Washington - DROM, NYC - 5.31.19
A New Orleans musical legend made a rare NYC appearance - 75-year-old Walter Wolfman Washington played a sensational show at DROM in The Village. Great performance by a great band.
Via wiki:
Walter Wolfman Washington (born December 21, 1943) is an American singer and guitarist, based in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. While his roots are in blues music, he blends in the essence of funk and R&B to create his own unique sound.
Washington was born in New Orleans, and whilst still in his teens, he was invited to play in Lee Dorsey's band.
In the mid 1960s, Washington formed the All Fools Band, and played at clubs in New Orleans.
In the 1970s, he joined Johnny Adams' band. He played with Adams for 20 years, both performing live and also appearing on his records.[1] During this time he continued to work as a solo artist, and in the late 1970s formed his own band, the Roadmasters, and toured Europe with them.[2]
Washington released his first solo album Rainin' In My Life in 1981 from a small local label Help Me. He landed a contract with Rounder Records in the mid 1980s and he released total of three albums from the label. After the Rounder days, he also released an album from Virgin subsidiary Point Blank Records.
Washington started to play regularly with two New Orleans musicians, the organist Joe Krown and the drummer Russell Batiste, Jr., working as a trio at the Maple Leaf Bar.
In 2008, he released Doin' the Funky Thing, his first album in many years. Live at the Maple Leaf, a live recording by Krown, Washington, Batiste was also released in the same year.

ELLEN SMITH & BAND WITH GUEST - DANNY TSUN @ GAZEBO CAFE - NEW ORLEANS - 27TH JULY 2011
Ellen Smith & Band, with guest - Danny Tsun @ Gazebo Cafe - New Orleans - 27th July 2011
While I was travelling throughout some of America, I went to New Orleans.
In a nutshell - I was walking along, heard some fine grooves, fine vocals, and I was thirsty for a beer. So i sat down, had a few tasty local Abita beers! and had to get this on film. What amazed me most was the fact that these guys were busking! yes, thats right - playing for tips. If they were here in Australia, they would be in a venue playing for actual pay. Thats how much talent and kick ass music there is in the States. It was a mighty hot day too - 40 degree heat.. But, the funky soul blues carried me on through.
Was great to meet them, and to get up and play some Keyboards with them! :-)
They were awesome! If ever you are in New Orleans, go check them out.
Ellen Smith - Vocals,
Special guest - Danny Tsun: Sydney, Australia - Keyboards
Keiko Komaki - Bass/Organ,
Tony Dillan - Drums

On the 2nd day in the Big Easy we have been in the Desperado, our favorite Italian restaurant, and then we strolled through Frenchmen ending up in the Spotted Cat, one of the oldest Jazz clubs in the French Quarter. I could not resist, I had to dance, and Fritz could not resist, he had to shoot me.

More Live Music/Live Performance Venues
The city that gave birth to jazz and the first US city to build an opera house now has more options for live entertainment than ever before. New Orleans has entire streets and neighborhoods dedicated to nightlife and live entertainment. The most famous of which is Bourbon Street and the French Quarter. But beyond Bourbon Street lies Frenchmen Street in the Faubourg Marigny – home to more than a dozen outstanding live music venues restaurants and bars. Beyond Frenchmen, lies the St. Claude corridor which is adding new live performance bars and restaurants almost monthly. And the same old familiar live music halls are still hosting amazing shows nightly, including – Tipitina’s, House of Blues, Preservation Hall, Snug Harbor, The Howlin’ Wolf, The Maple Leaf, DBA and The Spotted Cat, to name but a few.
