SOUTH AFRICA: MAPUTALAND MARINE RESERVE: TURTLE PROTECTION
English/Nat
A unique scheme aimed at protecting endangered marine turtles in South Africa has scored its best-ever success.
The Natal Parks Board in Durban says they've recorded the highest number of nesting leatherback and loggerhead turtles.
They've turned a small section of the coastline on South Africa's eastern seaboard into a haven for the threatened creatures.
With its endless stretches of deserted beaches and forested dunes, the Maputaland Marine Reserve in the north-eastern corner of South Africa looks like paradise.
This stretch of coastline has been an ideal breeding ground for leatherback and loggerhead turtles for centuries.
However, in choosing this spot the animals did not bargain on the needs of the thousands of local residents living on the other side of the dunes. They relied on the fruits of the ocean as their only source of protein.
As a result, many of the leatherbacks and loggerheads did not make it back to the sea after they had emerged to lay their eggs. Locals hunted them for their flesh and plundered their nests for the 100-odd protein-rich eggs.
By 1963, the Natal Parks Board realised that the breeding ground along the coast just south of the coastal border between South Africa and Mozambique was on the brink of disaster.
The Board established the marine reserve and declared the leatherback and loggerhead turtles protected species.
One of the most respected conservation organisations in the world, the Natal Parks Board regards the turtle conservation programme as one of its greatest successes. (The other is the conservation of the black rhino which was nearing extinction before the Natal Parks Board stepped in.)
In 1963, only seven leather back turtles were counted during the breeding season. Thirty-two years later, 126 animals have been counted during the 1994/95 season - and they will carry on laying for a few weeks yet.
The largest reptile on earth, the leatherback turtle does nest elsewhere in the world, but this breeding ground in the Maputaland Marine Reserve is the only one in Africa that is monitored and protected.
Here, conservation officers work through the night during the three month summer nesting period to tag, count and monitor the females and hatchlings.
Each hatchling that is found before it makes it the sea, receives a notch on its shell which will indicate during which season it hatched.
The tiny creatures are then released into the sea from a beach where researchers believe the females will return one day to lay their own eggs.
The animals then swim straight out to the warm Agulhas current that passes the South African eastern coast, avoiding countless predators along the way.
Once in the current, they will swim around and around the Indian Ocean for many years until they reach sexual maturity.
John Llewellyn, senior ranger in charge of the Maputaland Marine Reserve, says the protection scheme has been so successful because it has involved members of the local community.
They've been taught the importance of conserving the species.
SOUNDBITE:
When it all started off, there was a lot of concern - the local people were harvesting the animals, robbing nests, so it really started off as a protection programmes for the turtles; and consequently the research has come along and piggy-backed on that protection programme.

SOUNDBITE:
It is the longest ongoing research programme in the world pertaining to the loggerhead and leatherback and has got a really excellent data base at this stage.
